ROFLMAO! it's a small world after all.

Mind you ... (not tryin to be argumentative!! ) but my rusty anatomy and phys' sorta tells me that extremes of mechanical damage will still not necessary heal fully if damage real severe ... then there is likely to be scar formation ... and maybe damping effects.

Well, it won't come fully back with any treatment, but the steroid treatment, if done soon after the incident, does help. I remember reading about a cop who at a traffic stop had a snubbie .357 pulled on him. He grabbed the drivers forearm and moved it enough that the pistol discharged next to his ear instead of in his face. He had an instataneous 80% loss of hearing in that ear. He went directly to the ER after the incident and the doc prescribed a steroid treatment, he regained 95% of his hearing.

Prolonged exposure is really what gets ya, when you don't use hearing protection and it doesn't leave your head ringing, but it still did a little damage as it does the next time and the time after that.

Point is noted, I fully understand you were referring to Electronic muffs. But I stand by my statement. Yes you can hear more through Electonic muffs but I don't want any incumbrances if I'm in my house and think someone else is too.

If you feel it is a plus, by all means and go ahead.

I just don't think it's a good idea, for ME.

Do you really want to train yourself to put on earmuffs or plugs before shooting? It seems like the kind of thing that might cost you part of a second.

As you read some the posts here, and in other boards, you get the feeling that there are a LOT of 'newbies' out there. The extent of their gun knowedge cosisits of reading magazines, hanging out at gun shops, and looking at posts.

There are some really dumb myths circulating. This is one of them.

Great topic!!

You have to love all those cop shows on TV that show some people involved in a gun fight going through two or more clips, then afterwards have a conversation like nothing ever happend!! Right!!!!
Many years ago when hunting for deer, I shot three times at a buck with a .44 mag from a treestand, and my hearing was shot for three days afterwards!! Since that day, plugs are with me always!! The blast from a revolver or pistol without any ear protection will, over time, make you deaf for sure whether you notice it or not.

Tuff call with a life or death situation and worrying about your ears. I would guess if you had the time, the electronic ear muffs would be best like mentioned above. I hope I never have to find out!!!!!

Smoke to badguy: "Don't shoot yet, Let me put on my muffs, wouldn't want to damage my hearing you know" :D

Actually it takes me more than "part" of a second to put on plugs or muffs.

Your post left me unclear: Which side are you on?

To LEO's out there: Do you put on hearing protection when entering a building where a suspect is supposed to be hiding?

To Lawdog: Did you have your earplugs in when you entered the building where you were attacked by Santa Claus?

If your life is on the line, don't spend time dickin' around with muffs and glasses. After all, it's better to be a little deaf than a little dead.

This topic has been discussed several time. Do a quick search if you wan to find more info.
