Beginning to think about a load for my Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull. Will be used mainly for deer so a 300 grainer sizzling out at 1700 fps isn't essential (but I admit, perfectly fine for deer, especially on longer-than-average shots).

Those of you that hunt with a .454, what is your pet load? I have had trouble getting good accuracy out of this revolver with jacketed bullets. I know this cartridge tends to "burn up" many jacketed bullets. However, have been using the Speer 300gr Gold Dot specifically designed for the .454, so it shouldn't be a problem of me pushing the bullet too fast. My 300 grain cast wheel wieghts on top of 22grains of IMR-4227 seem much more accurate (yep, I know it's a wimpy load for a .454) but I was hoping to shoot something that would provide more expansion than solid lead.

Suggestions? Comments?

All responses welcome. Thanks in advance...:)

Sabre .. me too!!! 9 1/2" SRH and ''Raging Lunatic'' also.

I am coming towards the end of my Hornady 300 grn XTP factory ammo ... and now have plenty of brass .. and 200 x 300 grn XTP bullets to use.

I love that factory load and plan to try and copy it ..... this gives about 1850 ft lbs of energy!! I am thinking H-110 for now but - interested to hear of other loads .... 296 perhaps?

I do find this hot Hornady leaves very obvious copper residue on rifling .. but then hey - at these sorta velocities, maybe not too surprising eh?:p
