In order of my personal preference:

Glock 17
Glock 19
CZ 75B
Sig P226
Beretta 92
Hi Power

I would say that any of these are reliable and usable. The list was compiled according to what I shoot the best and platforms that I prefer. All can be obtained for less than $1,000.00

From what I've owned:
Sig 226 or Glock (pick your size 26,19,17,34)

CZ's are nice but there is not much slide to grab for a rack for my big fingers.. super accurate though.
If thinking a 1911.. look at the STI Trojan 9mm.

With $1,000, I'd buy the two 9mm handguns that I already own and love:

Beretta 92FS (range, HD) - $500
Kahr CW9 (CCW) - $450

Which would leave me with $50 to either buy a nice holster to conceal the Kahr, or about 4 boxes of 9mm range ammo.

With the amount of reliable, quality 9mm handguns out there brand-new for under $600, there's no reason to spend $1,000 on one.

I'll stick with my Star M30. It's not pretty or refined however it is accurate and has always gone bang when you want it to. Never jammed and will handle any 9mm cartridge it has been fed.
