I browsed through the CDNN catalog and noticed they had a seeming amazing deal on the 5906. They are stated to be in Good to Very Good condition, and for $300 it seems like a steal.

What do you guys think of the model? Any particular issues that come from wear?

And on a side note, anyone have experience with a DP-51?

Built like a tank, accurate, reliable. Mine will feed empty cases all day long if I feel like cycling them through. Steel frame is heavy, but makes the felt recoil almost nothing. The 3rd Gen S&W autos are great guns, and they're tending to go up in price - for $300, jump on one.

I have a 5903 the alloy brother of the 5906, and it has been absolutely reliable. If i was in the market for another 3rd gen. I would jump on that dill.

What Aahzz said. I bought mine new, maybe 15 years ago. Great guns. Strong, feeds anything and shoots very well. On mine I changed to a normal exposed hammer that I can cock with my thumb if I want to and I use 12 or 15 round magazines round magazines with extensions.

Hi everybody, I have a 5906 also I really enjoy but I have the adjustable rear sight. The windage was turned out to far one day and the detent and spring well you know it's gone!! Does any body know off a supplier who might carry the entire sight assy? I looked at Brownells and N/A no longer produced by S&W. only kits avail but some reviews are well not to good fitting issues. After market would work but this rear sight is held in by the 3 detent spring set up on the adjustable type sight, not the dove tail the fixed have. thank you all for any thoughts or suggestions US ARMY RETIRED

Although I don't currently own one, I have had good experiences with S&W 3rd Gen autos, and I've owned a few. The only problems I ever ran into were a 4506 that wouldn't decock, which I returned, and a 1006 that needed a new extractor. For the latter, S&W put a new extractor on it at no charge.

I have had no problems with a different 4506, the 5906 and the 457. For the right price I would not hesitate to buy another one; a later 3906 (fixed sights, smooth trigger guard) would be pretty nifty if I could find one.

I love my 5906, it's the second one I've owned: accurate, reliable, fun to shoot. On the downside, they're heavy: in my younger days I tried to use my first one as a carry piece and found it unwieldy for concealment in anything other than winter, but they make fantastic range and HD guns (mine is my nightstand gun right now, it likes Gold Dots).

Nut:

Perhaps I misunderstood what you said, but did you mean to say S&W no long has the parts available to fix your 5906?

The reason I ask is that ALL 3rd Gen Smiths came with a lifetime warranty to the original owners, so it would surprise me that if they didn't have stock left over to fix original owners pistols under warranty, or those guns bought by consumers used.

FWIW I have a 5906/6906/3913/3913LS/CS45, love 'em all.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I need to catch up on bills, so I probably won't be getting one anytime soon. I just wanted to see if it was worth keeping in mind when I get some more monies.

Any thoughts on the DP-51? The Daewoo is supposed to run similar to the 5906 from what I've heard, but I can never find much concrete information about them. Maybe I'm not searching hard enough...

3rd gens rock. Get one now while they, except for the 10mm models, are still dirt cheap. I'm going strictly by memory of long ago gunzine articles here, but IIRC the Daewoo pistols had a reputation for some pretty poor accuracy. Poor enough that even the likes of Jan Libourel had trouble excusing it. I'd go with a 3rd gen Smith over a Daewoo.

Someone said that the 5906 rocks. I'd say that it is a rock. Solid like a rock and heavy enough to bash someone's head in, too. :)

The 3rd gen 59XX are great pistols. Built like a tank - overbuilt... Eats anything, including empty cases - yes, I tried it for grins. I buy one whenever I have some spare change and then I get rid of one of my other ones. Pretty soon, all I will have are 59's when it comes to semis.

As for parts, man these things do not break. The only parts that you will ever need are the little ones (springs, extractor, ejector, firing pin) and they are plentiful. They are strong enough to take NATO rounds all day long without breaking a sweat. If all you're putting through 'em is range ammo, it will last several lifetimes and your grand kids could shoot them. There is zero recoil when shooting +P rounds, too.

The 59X6 are all SS. The 59X3 are alloy framed w/SS slide. The 5904 & 59X3's are a little off balanced when empty. There are a lot of minor variations to these pistols. The biggest is traditional SA/DA -vs- DAO. DAO has the smoothest trigger I've encountered in semi-autos. My favorite gun is a beat up former RCMP 5946 imported by CAI. 1" groups at 7 & 10 yards. 2" groups at 15 yards. It probably has close to 10,000 rounds now.

The ones on CDNN are decent deals. The Hogue grips are thick. I would spend $20 and swap 'em for OEM.

I have to jump on the 5906 LOVE wagon! IT IS THE GREATEST. My newest oldest pistol. Wow - I have been shooting to much plastic lately and if feels SO good to wrap around an all metal 9mm. That 9mm round and all that weight makes me think I am shooting a .22! :D

I like the Gens. 1-3 S&W pistols for the nostalgia.

Certainly good shooters.

Not so sure about them rising in value.
Maybe if you have one that is pristine - but even then the market is VERY narrow.

I'm partial to the Model 39 if I'm in a S&W retro mood.
Generally can be had for under $400 for nice, under $300 for scruffy shooters.

Accurate, reliable, decent ergonomics, and probably one of the toughest, if not the toughest, 9mm combat autos out there. I've run experimental loads through my 5906 confidently that I would trust in few other handguns, especially polymer guns.

They're one of the best deals out there right now ($300 for a gun that was over $700 new), but it won't last forever, so don't wait too long.

Argh... I wish I didn't have so many places my money needed to go to. After seeing some of the responses I really want one now haha. I guess I'll just need to save a bit.

And W.E.G., I don't worry too much about price depreciation for my firearms. I figure the only time I'll need to get rid of them will be in times when I'm going to have to take a hit anyways (hopefully never). Although I do I have a particular firearm that has tripled in value since coming across it :D

I read somewhere recently that CDNN has a pretty healthy supply of those trade-in 5906s, you're probably safe saving your pennies up for one.

Cant go wrong with the 5906. I had a DP51 and I liked it too. It shot fine as far as Im concerned. Ate whatever I fed it. Replacement parts may be hard to find.

The above members were all right one, I bought the 5906 few month ago and I was impress how accurate it shot for LE trade in pistol, soon after visitng my fav store he showed me a 6906. To make the long story short I whish I have the silvers to get one in 40 cal.

The inputs in this thread are typical of the kind of applause you will see on about any thread referencing "Third Generation" S&W pistols. Not many have a bad thing to say (other than maybe they're a mite heavy). These are well-built, reliable, durable and vastly under-rated pistols. Very affordable at the moment but I foresee the day in the not so distant future that these pistols will finally be recognized for the value and fine guns they are-accompanied unfortunately with prices that reflect the new awareness.

I have a 5906 and a 5946. Just wish there were reasonably priced magazines out there for them.
