I badly want to build a rifle again. My previous build project was an utter disaster - I had planned to build my own MN 91/30 sniper rifle, and wound up with a 91/30 missing a rear sight leaf - and now I want to mess with something perhaps a little easier.

I want to build one of those cool looking (purists, cover your ears) ATI mauser scout rifles. The Yugo M48a seems well suited for this - I believe it's a large ring short mauser, it's got a down turned bolt, it has real crappy wood, and yet uses the very friendly 8mm cartridge.

Here's the plan:

1. buy shooter grade from aim. $79
2. buy ati scout stock from midwayusa. $79
3. 1" rings $0 (from prev project)
4. 4x26 small tube sks scope $0 (from failed SKS project)
5. surplus 80's ammuntion $0 (have crates of this stuff)

here's the kicker... the challenge that the rifle must be able to meet is..

*drum roll*

hit a bowling pin at 100 yards!

this project is meant to be a fun little thing to do, not a real sporterization....

...

my only question: do you folks think the 48a will fit the ati large ring stock?

I got this stock for my BRNO large ring. HATED the design. Can't clean the rifle with out having to rezero. The upper and lower sections are held together with WOOD screws.

I only use the bottom half and I did some dremel work. I plan on getting a scout mount that goes in place of the rear leaf. I only paid 30 bux for mine at a gun show.

I own a Yugo M48 Mauser. The previous owner had it in an ATI stock and it seemed to work just fine for him. If you get an M48A with a good barrel, and the optics work out right, that bowling pin should be dead. The nice thing about the ATI stock is it allows you to use a scope on your Mauser without resorting to drill and tap. Therefore, you can return it to "as issued condition" any time you want. That will keep those meddlesome collectors off your back. ;)

m48a

well, i haven't actually gotten mine, yet, but i dont' forseee sticky bolt with a mauser. the big fat extractor, and the 8mm rimless design, is part of this, imho.

mosins are another issue.

as for the scout stock - i don't know if i'll actually do it, but I will probably give ti a shot. to be honest, fi i actually owned a drill press and had someone to show me how to use it, i would not hesitate at all to properly mount a scope on that puppy. come on - a bent bolt cheapie mauser practically begs one to put a scope on it.

more info, however.

the m48a is a LARGE RING, yet SHORT ACTION rifle. in other words, the reciever ring (correct me if i'm wrong) is k98 size, but the distact between center to center of the action screws is less than that of a k98. makes me wonder if one can even put an m48a properly in an ati scout stock.

also, most reviewers of the ati scout stock really do say that it's crap. as a matter of fact most reviewers of ati stocks in general say that they are crap. YMMV, but reading reviews of the stock at midway, thr, ctd, etc tend to suggest that while it DOES work, it is crap.

too bad, really. the idea was a sound one, if ati actually spent a bit more time, money, and r&d on it apparently.

Mine worked fine. I popped a coyote with my K98 last deer season, and hit several golf balls at the range. But I couldn't take it apart to suit, so it is now d&t'd. Might use the ATI stock for hunting in the rain this year, but right now it's sitting in a nice hardwood from numrich.
