M48A to become a Pseudo-Scout (Need Advice)

Okay, I've got some bonus money to play with and I want to turn my M48A into a Pseudo-Scout. I'm not gonna replace the original military stock because I like it, nor will I cut down the barrel or anything like that.

What I want to do is use S&K's Insta-Mount for a Yugo M48A (http://www.scopemounts.com/insta.htm), get a good set of rings, and a good scope. I might replace the trigger, but I am fond of the original two-stage pull.

My main concern is what scope to buy. For that matter, what kind of scope! I know I will need a scope with quite a bit of eye relief; will a pistol scope from Nikon, Burris, or Leupold serve well? Also, from researching the 'net, I have learned that Burris makes what they call a "Scout Scope". Is this scope nothing more than a pistol scope with a clever new name and marketing ploy?

Additionally, should the scope I buy be a fixed power or variable? Also, what would you recommend as being the maximum magnification for this scope? I was thinking that anything over 4 would be too much.

I've used a Leupold "Scout" scope on a M-94 Swede with good results. The Burris version should be OK too. The whole concept as espoused by Col. Cooper is using a forward mounted scope of fairly low power to allow quick target acquisition with both eyes open & making an accurate shot fairly quickly. You might check out B-Square. They have a variety of scout mount applications in their line. They supply Savage the mounts for the 110 Scout. BTW, the Burris scope is available with a post &crosshair reticle if that makes any diff.

I had a 1.4-4x25 Tasco pistol scope on my Mosin with Darrel's scout mount. At 4x, I can't see very well with it, but very usable.

I think the fixed 2.5x is about the right magnification. Leupold M8 is certainly very nice. Many folks use NcStar scope from China and have no complain about it.

The problem that I had with the Mosin is the cheek weld, or shall I say chin weld.. . You probably need something like this:

The Burris and Leupold Scout scopes both have an intermediate eye relief: less than a pistol scope, more than a conventional rifle scope. Some people use pistol scopes but for me I'd rather just buy the Loopy Scout scope. It is rugged, has the proper eye relief, and it isn't too pricey.

Measure the distance between where you'll be keeping your head and where the scope is to be mounted before buying an "intermediate" eye relief scope. Mausers, Mosins, etc. often work best in a scout configuration if they are fired with the same positioning you would use with iron tangent sights. That is, you DO NOT lean in to the scope. You keep your head well back. In this stance, the standard LER scope is best. I have had great results with a used Leopold 2x pistol scope on my 91/30 Mosin.

I won't go the Loopy scout route. Instead I'll get a Loopy pistol scope
