The Zeiss glass is so good that really you are not gaining all that much from the 50 mm vs. 40mm obj. I personally prefer the smaller obj. because it gets the scope mounted lower which is important to me.
Many of my best hunting opportunities are in low light. Light transmission is hard to quantify without a lot of specialized gear or low light and both scopes in hand. I liked a VX2 3-9x50 over a Conquest 3.5-10x44; a friend got rid of one for that exact reason. I get the 50mm obective because I think it is worth the size and cost tradeoff, but it was only $50 more or so for me.
If you hunt at night the 50mm will benefit you but as far as normal daytime legal hunting hours the 40mm will take you far longer than your last possible legal shot.
