For those of you that are unfamilliar with Costco's return policy, if I am unsatisfied with it I can return it for a full refund. ( no specific time limit)

Does this sound like a good deal?

Costco typically sells quality stuff for the price, and their return policy is unmatched. For $399, you can't be too picky and expect too much. What's the brand?

All I can say is that I had lunch for free at Costco today. Those free samples are amazing.

But GAWWWD I wish they sold ammo!!!

:what::eek::what::eek::what:

That would be amazing.

The only information that I could find on the company is Sisco industries out of Rancho Dominguez California. This could be the distributer or manufacturer.

There's better out there

A few days after Christmas, I went to Costco and bought the gun safe you speak of. Attracted by what appeared to be a feature laden safe for a really good price, I figured I was getting a good deal. The display model had the door open so I was able to look inside and play with the shelves and see how much room was in it. I didn't know the combination to the lock so I couldn't unlock it to try the lock and door fit, but I went ahead and bought it knowing that Costco usually carries quality items and also aware that if I wasn't satisfied, I could drag it back.

Brought it home and stripped it of the cardboard and man, what a let down. The most apparent problem was the door wouldn't close up tight to the body of the safe. When it was locked, I could grab the spindle and shake the door back and forth and believe me, it moved quite a bit. Granted, it did not open, but there was enough room between the door and the body to put a crow bar in if I felt compelled to do so.

It is what it is - a gun safe for $399. Did it do what it was supposed to? Sure; it locked and kept me out unless I used the combination. I am a stickler for quality and I thought the loose door and the massive gap between the door and body wasn't going to bother me, but it did. Two weeks later, I took it back and they refunded my money, no questions asked.

If you ask me, there are better safes out there. If you able to do so, spend a little extra money and get a good, quality fireproof safe that is UL rated (this one was not). There are safes to be had for under $1000 that are really well made. I've spent thousands of dollars on my firearms and figured this was the least I could do to keep them protected. Years of working and saving for everything I have now isn't worth losing because I either bought a cheap safe or didn't use a safe at all.

Lastly, the next time you go back, enter the factory programmed code. If I remember right, it's '159A'. If it works, lock the door and check the door to frame fit. Open the model you intend to buy and go over it. I may have got a poorly made safe, but after dragging that thing back and forth across town, I wasn't willing to make the same mistake twice.

Let us know what you purchase. Sorry my information isn't as technical as others who contribute; I just don't know enough about gun safes to eloquently write about them.

Wow! I never thought I would get a response from someone who has actually bought one so soon.

Thanks for the feedback and the code, I will try it out.

Assuming the door dosent have the gap and does not rattle, I will consider buying it.

Even if the gap is there, you can fix the rattle by putting some thin foam padding at various spots on the door perimeter. I have a cheap Stack-On GS-8 in my closet. The safe rattled because of a small gap. I added the thin foam padding at various spots where the door meets the box. Six 1-inch strips evenly spaced out did the trick. The door on my cheap safe feels quite solid because of that $2 fix, and the padding looks like it's supposed to be there.

Really thin padding should do the trick without messing with the fire protection seal that occurs during a fire. Make no mistake that I would not tolerate the rattling on a real safe.

jakemccoy,

Great idea on the foam. Trust me, I thought of that, too, but opted to take it back and go with something a little more stout.

This safe may certainly be what you're looking for. Again, it did what it was designed to do. It's no tuna can, but it's no Fort Knox, either. I guess when it came down to the nitty gritty, I didn't think the fit, finish, and final product was that great. I've since learned a lot about safes, and I have finally found the safe that has everything I desire.

Oh, and kudos to Costco for taking it back. I even took it back to a store that didn't carry it as part of their stock, but they were cool and said it mattered not to them. Five minutes later, I was walking out with my cash.

Sounds like the same one I looked at a week or so ago. It looked good for the price and the door seems stout but then I knocked on the side and it seemed about as thick as the metal on my locker in high school.

Probably radioactive steel too, being made in China! :what:

Was this thing also fire rated, or just a "safe"?

Winchester safe

The best of the low priced gun safes is the "Winchester" model sold at Sams Club for around $600. It's made by Granite Security out of Texas. You can see it at their web site. Unlike the Stack On or Sentry brands sold at places like Lowes or Dicks, the Winchester model is 12 guage and has a UL lock.

If I may generally you do get what you pay for but in this case i must say that a safe that you spend $400-$1000 for will do what you want and that is keeping your guns out of the hands of thieves. one must remember most B&E are done for drug money etc and the thieves want to be in and out as quick as possible
and the likely hood that they will take the time to try and bust open a safe that MIGHT have something expensive or just junk is not worth the risk of A going to jail or B being shot beaten etc by the home owner if caught just ain't worth it.

I had been looking at that Costco safe for about a year. It seemed ok but it has no real fire protection. A few months ago --after checking out safes for months--I opted for a Liberty safe. Cost was a little higher but it's twice the size of the Costco safe plus has fire protection and a great warranty.
The Costco safe is made in China and that bugged me a bit too. I did a net search of the Sisco co that distributes it and found nothing that made me feel good about buying the Costco safe.
My Liberty cost $799 at Ganders but they have them on sale right now for $599:cuss::banghead::banghead:. Oh well--bad timing on my part but I like my safe

I purchased a total of 4 "Timber Ridge Model 25" safes from Gander Mountain. These safes are made for Gander Mountain by Liberty safe. I am very pleased with them, and if you watch their sales, and purchasing perks they can be purchased for around $600.00.
