Do you remember that, what was it, oh yeah- "Beyond a reasonable doubt"? Not, "Preponderance of the evidence"

So if there is any doubt, he shouldn't be in jail at all.

Incorrect. "Beyond a reasonable doubt" does not equal beyond any and all doubt, even unreasonable. I don't believe there is reasonable doubt that Peterson snuffed his poor wife. However, that doesn't rule out the possibility that the one-armed man will be found. I'm sure OJ is on the case. ;)

Chances are pretty good they will send him to an out of state prison. MN had a very controversial case a few years ago and after they guy was sentenced they sent him out East because they said he wouldn't be safe in a MN prison. If he is sent to a prison in WI it will most likely be a death sentence. Dahmer lasted three years before they found him dead in a prison bathroom.

Standing Wolf Wisconsin does not yet have a CCW, but we do have the Constitutional right to bear arms in our State Constitution.

Wisconsin Constitution:
The people have the right to keep and bear arms for
security, defense, hunting, recreation or any other lawful purpose.

I think he got what he deserved. Killing someone for muder might make us feel better, but living in a cage knowing you messed up your life and your family's life and that you will never get out while you lived is a more fitting punishment for someone who is where he is because he failed to think before shooting at other people. I bet he has time to think about what he did now. He should have to live with it for years just like his victims' families do. Once the bad guy is dead, it's too easy for people not directly affected to forget and move on or pretend it never happened. Incarcerated for life, he serves as a remider. For myself, I would rather be killed then caged for life. I suspect many people would. Life without hope is a pretty bitter pill to swallow.

Structuring a death penalty system is very costly and dramatically increases the grounds for appeal. A few death penalty convictions will generate a massive amount of appeal work--enough to have to hire several 70 to 100k per year attorneys to deal with it. The more death sentences handed down, the more people you have to hire to deal with them. In addition, the use of the DP requires structural changes to the way defense counsel is funded. It all comes from the tax payers. You can either put the guy in prison for life at 50k per year or you can put him in prison for ten years before he's put to death and fund a multi-million dollar team of lawyers on both sides to deal with the appeals and writs generated by the conviction.

Great description of the way the system exists. It is a monster we have created. It is a monster that can be changed but won't be until we as a society deem human life to be of value.

I for one do not confuse law and justice. Justice is the goal, law is the means to the goal. Sometimes law leads to justice. Sometimes law fails to lead to justice.

At an absolute minimum, if we refuse to execute cold-blooded murderers then we should exempt the family of the victims from paying any taxes during the time the murderer is being held in prison instead of being killed.

He gets sentenced to life in a Wisconsin prison. That doesn't necessarily mean a long life in prison. Things can and do happen in prison.

Death or life--it's too late for the victims. The lesson of the day is ARM YOURSELF esp. if you're out hunting. In that entire party only one person was armed.

i dont think there is any doubt.

Even if he WAS shot at first, that only justifies shooting the guy who actualy shot at him. It certainly doesnt justify Shooting multiple unarmed people IN THE BACK as they flee, and then shooting an unarmed, wounded man int he back AGAIN as he trys to crawl away from you. This is from Vangs own mouth.

Either way you look at it, he is still guitly of multiple counts of Murder.

Case closed.

Resigned to his fate, Vang alternately appeared conciliatory and defiant in his own remarks to Yackel.

He called Tuesday the happiest day of his life, and he encouraged all those affected by the ordeal to learn from it: to treat each other better, to learn from different cultures, to live in peace and avoid prejudice.

He said he understood the anger, frustration and pain expressed by the relatives of his victims.

But he did not apologize, and the father of seven said he was happy that the State of Wisconsin would house and feed him for the rest of his life, and that he no longer would be burdened by a mortgage or child support payments.

It IS a shame he didn't get death..

the truth is that the people most needing to learn a lesson from this most likely will not. People only remain vigilant and change their behavior for a short period of time, then fal lback in their old ways. If they carried a gun before, they still will. If not, they are not likely to start because of this. Same with any other lessons to be learned, which I guess were lost on many. So it's just a matter of time before we get a recurrance; maybe a year, maybe ten, but just a matter of time. Shame about the future victims though, I wish they would havelearned something from this tradegy.:(
