My first non-stainless firearm

First non-stainless firearm/Care tips???

I broke down and actually bought a non-stainless firearm. I was buying the Ruger for my FIL and I saw this one and it haunted me until I went back and got it. I justified it by saying it will be my "gold panning firearm". It is a .45 Colt Ruger Bird's Head Vaquero w/3.75" barrel. I am a completely stainless gun guy. Everything I own including my rifles are all in stainless. This gun just seemed perfect in it case hardened finish (I believe that is the correct term). The stainless one did not have the same feel to it. I am even thinking of pimping it out with the faux-pearl handles (it came with the faux-ebony). Will this be a lot harder to care for if it gets wet??? I had an old blued Taurus once that seemed to rust if it rained within 15 miles of it. What special precautions should I take?

I like the black grips. Ivory would look good, too. Pearl? Meh. If you like it...

A thin coat of car wax works great on rust-prone metal.

Nice gun. I really like the case-hardened look. I'm a huge fan of the Ruger single actions. Right now I only have a Blackhawk Convertible (.357-9mm), which is my hunting side arm, but I've had a number of other Rugers in the past and will probably have one just like that pictured someday.

As for the comic books, my assistant is a comic geek, and I used to be. I had a terrific comic collection spanning the years 1969-1983, but gave it to my son when he started collecting comics in the late 1980s. He still has them. My assistant and I are in publishing and we often go to a newstand to check out the latest magazines. I look at car, motorcycle, and gun mags while he browses comic books. More and more I find myself tempted to pick up an issue of something or other, but I just don't have time for another hobby.

I thought that was why they INVENTED stainless guns? Am I missing something?

Hey, I didn't say it made sense. I just fell in love with it.
I am sure we have all bought something impractical. Everyone I know carries a blued finish when we go. I was using a stainless Ruger GP100 but I felt out of place with the other more cowboyish revolvers. They all say they have little issue with rust and that as long as you keep it clean and oiled it is okay. My main concern is I am not experienced in the proper care of this finish.

Get a can of LPS2......

it is a milspec rust preventative and lube. Use it as your wipe down fluid and spray it where you can't reach. It dries after application. It is in a turquois and white spray can. I got my last can at Tru Value hardware......chris3

Good choice, I have always liked the feel of those bird's head gripped Vaquero's.

Oil

Oil, Oil, Oil- just keep it oiled with whatever you have. Sewing machine oil, 10W30, 3-in1, whatever. Just oil it when you feel like it. Enjoy the beauty of the gun while your doing it- if you pay attention you will notice things about about the gun you never paid attention to before. Consider it fun, not a chore- enjoy the scent of oil and the steel, and leather if you have real holster
If you have to store it- wrap it in a well oiled t-shirt in a paper bag.

You have purchased a gun I've been lusting after for some time. I have purchased others instead because I can envision specific uses for them. I cannot envision a specific use for a Bird's Head Vaquero...I just want one!

Those guns are just sweet and seem a perfect sidearm for a gold panner.
