.500 S&W is an excellent self defence round... if your neighbourhood is swarming with freakishly large bears wearing body armor. For self defence against targets of human size or a little larger, get something between a 9x19mm and a .357 mag.

And stop making all these 'will [insert name of overly powerful round here] be good enough for self defence' threads.

It's just 275 grains at 1,350 fps. It's not gonna break your arm. I have no idea how loud it'd be compared to a 357, or what kind of flash it'd have from what is presumably a 2 or 4 inch compensated barrel.

In my state the largest round allowed by law for concealed carry is .45 cal.

reserved for zombie t-rex's and anti-aircraft fire only...I wonder what load that kid shot the monster pig with?

Hey, I've got this Bofors 40mm cannon I carry concealed. Do you think I would be better off with the armor piercing or the proximity fused HE rounds for self defense? I hate carrying something this small, but it is hard to dress around the 120mm cannon in the summer heat. Of course all of this is just so I can fight my way back to the Minute Man II ICBM I keep in the silo out back under my assault wheel barrow...

Why are people scoffing at his choice of caliber? He didn't ask "what do you think of my choice of gun". If he wants to carry a big bore pistol, more power to him.

500 for concealment? Yes! Who says it’s too big? Who says it too heavy? Galco

Makes a shoulder holster (vertical) for it (4 inch model).

Come on! What! All gun owners are dwarfs’ or munchkins?

Next he's going to ask how to keep it concealed at the beach.:D

My only suggestion would be lots and lots of vasoline, and be careful sitting down.

What state's that?

Your neighbor to the north - Oklahoma.

envonge. how do you carry? iwb, shoulder holster? it seems to me it would be pretty good for self-defence. as long as recoil ain't to bad. a 275gr. 50 cal moving at 1350!!! way beter than a 45.:what:

Evonge if your revolver is on the longer barrel size this might interest you (though its not ammo) its a spring break holster like the on in taxi driver. http://www.andrewsleather.com/
click on the spring break link on the shoulder systems section.

seriously ninja42 what fun would the revolver section on the highroad be with out all the people on here that are willing to carry such beasts? if you really dislike such an idea thats fine but don't insult the person doing so.
