CMMG 22 LR Conversion kit

Using the same barrel is fine. I believe that the manufacturer recommends firing 10 .223 through it, after about 200 .22, to clean out the gas tube. I would also recommend getting a .22-specific charging handle. Different geometry, .22 brass WILL get stuck in the track on a standard charging handle. After all of this, and difference in POA/POI, a dedicated .22 upper does look simpler...

I have one. Nary a single glitch. Excellent.

I bought a dedicated CMMG .22 lr upper and installed KNS sights, using blackdog magazines, for my daughter, and it is better than I thought it could be. I even have fun with it when I’m not playing with old turn bolt .22’s.

I have the CMMG conversion kit and like it . I just run a few rounds of 5.56 after using 5he conversion kit.

I use my conversion kit with regular charging handle. No issues.

POI with the conversion kit is way off, but consistently off so I can just dial it into the red dot. Groups are nowhere near as good as 556, but plenty of fun for 25yd plinking.

My daughter has the dedicated CMMG 22LR upper and it’s way more accurate.

Definitely get the conversion kit. 22LR AR is so fun it should be illegal.

Try shooting suppressed 22LR AR. It’s even better.

The bolt cycling is the loudest part!

I've got a Spikes Tactical conversion, no issues here either. A couple of the guys I work/train with have CMMGs and I haven't seen any of them have issues either. Last year in prep for a carbine class we had a .22AR day at my place as to not screw up my AR500 targets. About the only issue was picking up the 1000's of cases afterwards.

In my Colt LE6920 I just put a few .223s down the tube after a session, with my franken AR with AGB I just shut the gas off when shooting .22LR. Bought a M&P15-22 a few years ago, so my Spikes hasn't seen much use since then.

I bought the cmmg drop in kit a while back, prolly have around 1000 rnds of 22lr through my AR, not a single issue. The only thing I would recommend, is to get the stainless steel version, it's easier to clean. Also, just like others have noted, fire about 10 rnds of 223/5.56 through it after, to help blow out carbon and remove residue from barrel.

I'm set up with a bull target barrel (with an old Colt .22 action) that is stunningly accurate, though heavy. I also have a Rick Kuehl .22 upper that I bought from Brownell's back when dedicated .22 uppers were scarce and expensive. It uses an Atchisson type action (as does CMMG and most others) and is another dream shooter.

I don't know if the Atchisson type actions have changed since I bought mine, but removing the BCG can get a little zany when the action spring and various small parts start taking off on their own. (The old Colt BCG stays together nicely.) Nonetheless, both uppers make for fun, accurate shooting despite being a bit picky about ammo. (FWIW, CCI Blazer shoots just fine in both, Federal Gold Medal not so much.)

You don't need a separate upper or barrel if you just want something for the kids to have fun with. I have two of the CMMG conversion kits and they work just fine in my mid length and carbine length AR-15's. I'm very happy with them.

True. It's just that I'm the big kid having .22 plinking fun here.

I have one that I originally bought to shoot my AR indoors in the winter( indoor range at my club is pistol cal. only, which does not allow the proper procedure of firing 10 rnds of 5.56 to clean out the gas tube) and while I never had any problems function wise, it wasn't very accurate( 4" @25yds).


With 22 ammo back in abundance at a reasonable price I used it more for 22 than I did 5.56 even at the outdoor range, and got fed up with the extra cleaning. The ammo I use leaves a gritty residue in the upper and I could feel it when reinstalling the 5.56 bcg and charging the action, I also didn't like the idea of blasting a few hundred rounds worth of 22 junk into my bcg.


I ended up getting one of the last 22 barrels from taccom right before they stopped selling RF accessories. Swapped the barrels and I couldn't be happier with it. Much more accurate, easier cleaning, and swapping uppers at the range is a lot less messy than swapping dirty bcg's.

If one ever decides getting the best accuracy out of the Cmmg conversion, I highly recommend the
Cmmg dedicated 22lr barrels. I built a dedicate rifle in 22lr using the 20" Gov't profile barrel from Cmmg
And I must say I was surprised on how accurate it is using irons. Now I really want to scope it

I was looking at the charging handles from CMMG. I occasionally get a case stuck in the standard AR charging handle. I couldn’t bring myself to by one after I read they were plastic. Does anyone make a 22LR specific charging handle that’s not plastic? What changes are made to the charging handle to make it 22LR specific?

@rskent The one I had (about 6 years ago) was aluminum. The track was shallower, which prevented .22lr brass from fitting. I can't remember where I got it from, will do some research.

Having looked a little, I am starting to doubt my memory of it being aluminum. Maybe someone with more recent experience will chime in.

Try running a regular charging handle and see if you have problems.

I have the CMMG plastic one in the parts box. I swapped it for a real one on my dedicated upper.

FWIW, I run my .22 uppers with ordinary milspec charging handles without any problems.

That is what I am using now. I get a case stuck now and then. I would like to get something better or modify what I have. I don’t think I want to buy a plastic one.

Try different ammo.

My uppers are ammo sensitive. I used to have lots of both feed and extraction (stovepiping) problems when running Federal Gold Medal or Winchester Dynapoint. Switching to CCI cured all that. Both CCI Blazer (the cheap stuff) and MiniMag run perfectly, as does Wolf Match. All rifles are different; YMMV.
