Winchester Introducing a Rimless 357 Max

It is their answer to the 450 BM. Designed for hunters in states limited to straight walled cartridges 35 caliber and up. I think it will sell well in those states just like the 450 BM has. The 450 is really too big for deer, I'm betting the 35 caliber is about right.

The 357 maximum is a nice little 150-200 yard deer round pushing a 180 grain XTP at 2000 fps. The biggest thing hampering it is there are are only a few bullets well suited to it since 357 magnum bullets are too soft, and 35 rem bullets are too tough. I'm very excited to see this come out. I don't want one, I just hope we see some new spitzer 357 bullets offered in the 180-200 grain range designed for the 2000 fps velocity range.

I always thought an even better deer round than both would be a straight wall 6.8 spc loaded with 41 magnum bullets. As it turns out someone did make essentially a straight wall 6.5 grendel to use 40 caliber muzzleloader bullets. I just found it by searching. Unfortunately it uses rather obscure Carcano brass as its parent.

Specs will be interesting. A straightened out .223 is not quite a .38 or even 9mm. Head diameter will likely be larger. Like a rimless .357 Max, eh? But probably no so much larger that you can't rebarrel an AR for it with little if any other change.

I guess it will be good for those "straight case" hunting states, for those who don't mind throwing uncommon brass in the weeds.

If it’s a rebated rim, so it uses the same bolt as a .223, it wouldn’t be the first round to implement the idea.

I forgot to post earlier that I want one of these in a bolt gun. I will most likely build an ar upper too, but the bolt gun is more interesting to me. Think short handy suppressor host.

They now have it listed on Winchester’s ammo website with velocities and weights. Looks like 150 grain up to 265

I'll quote them here:

145 gr USA FMJ, 2350 fps, 1778 ft lbs, BC approx 0.182
150 gr Deer Season XP, 2325 fps, 1800 ft lbs, BC approx 0.222
160 gr Power Max Bonded, 2225 fps, 1759 ft lbs, BC approx 0.202
180 gr Super X, 2100 fps, 1762 ft lbs, BC approx 0.220
265 gr Super Suppressed, 1060 fps, 661 ft lbs, BC approx 0.326

The 145-180 bullets all are really disappointing in BC compared to the Hornady 180 xtp that works really well in the 357 maximum.
