The thing I admire most is walking around any length of time with that beast. No lightweight hunter, that. Glad to see it used in the field. Congrats on your deer.

the farmer must of called him up on the phone needed to cull the herd down some
, a vehicle can travel down that road slowly then jump out as yah spot the deer at a distance, then all yah got to do is move in close using trees as cover to make the shot

Fal is a bit heavy but balanced with a carry handle. It has been used to hunt two legged game by 90 nations. Its not as bad in the bush as it's loaded weight might suggest. It's not that its heavy, you just gotta readjust your arms a little then it becomesa stout and robust all purpose rifle.

Some good comments here and ribbing The deer do get into these orchards by finding a bad section of fence or a gap underneath, they are not wanted by any means. The damage they can do to the tree's is extensive which will cut into the profit margin. This one I saw in the distance while waiting for some friends to work over in my direction, not a canned hunt by any means. A lot of walking is involved up and down the rows,so we learned to "post" a guy near the junction of tractor lanes. For someone asking, that is an Alcan Spectre with flip 4x, I pulled the battery to make the red dot inop. That deer did not take a step when hit, dropped on the spot. While watching immediately afterward, I saw another deer blast by and dive under the fencing.

People butchered a serious fraction of Enfield #4s, probably to save weight.
The notion of needing to carry an FAL to a deer stand, instead of a much lighter Butchered Enfield, would have sent so many of those men running for their "campus safe spaces".

No "need" at all to tote the FAL, just plain desire!!!!! At the age of 56 with 28+ years of military service, walkin-n- stalkin is normal too me. Besides, if I choose to carry a FAL, I cannot complain about the weight

Some guys who prefer short lightweight rifles probably thought the Enfield #4 was too long a barrel for woods work. A Jungle Carbine would've been pretty good in that respect except for the lightening cuts which allowed the wandering zero.
I can't comment on the FAL but .30cals do the job.

Jmorris, I was invited to come and hunt the orchard by a friend, his brother-in-law works there. The deer find ways into the orchard and can tear up the apples and trees. I don't know what they use or how they mow the perimeter. Those orchards are anywhere from 80-150 acres, a lot of walking in there.

Never heard of the Elcan Specter. Not a cheap $100 scope by any imagination. It is good to see someone using a FAL.

I've used my M1A effectively and my dad just bagged one with his AR-10. Those battle rifles do the job. Good eatin right there! Nice shooting!
