Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

Out on Sunday up into the 10,000' range. There's still snow.

IMG_20200607_130104273.jpg

Too much in fact.

IMG_20200607_123912903_HDR.jpg

I ended up post holing most of the way uphill, up to my thighs in places, and
got my boots soaked. But I got as far as I could go before I started losing the cairn trail on the ridge.

IMG_20200607_130036218.jpg

So I went back and hit the trail the other direction. Downhill.

I was packing a Ruger SBH Bisley conversion with 300gr WFN .44 mag handloads. A G23/.357 Sig with 124gr JFP loads. A Fallkniven A1, and some very helpful hiking poles.

IMG_20200607_130002214.jpg

I've seen more moose sign in this area than any other place to date. Also crossed paths with one during a still hunt last year. So that's what the .44 is for. The .357 Sig is for everything else. Like whatever made this.

Because that's not dog poop.

I went hiking yesterday, it was a little warm (90), but not as hot as it has been lately (100s). Took my standard carry gun, a Kahr P9, because it is light and I was carrying enough weight in water. No critters to worry about where I was hiking, but people and out of control dogs are always a consideration.

2016 CDL '06,5 star Redfield 4-12. Lee 309-150 with right much Varget stuffed in running around 2400fps. This rig really likes a 175g Lyman as well but recoil gets up there.

My blue bird day, varmint blaster. Down on the river with the Dobe.

We went 2 days this week, also went to Siesta Key beach, the park was great. I would recommend it to anyone! Fun vacation!! And yes hot and steamy
We were in myakka and siesta key two years ago. Beautiful places. If you get back in the area be sure to visit Snook Haven.

I spent last Friday on the banks of S.E. Illinois' Embarrass river. Picking up driftwood. Some whole trees floated out into our field over the winter. We picked up wood for the better part of Thursday evening, and planted soybeans there Friday. By Monday afternoon the river overflowed its banks and ruined our work. A down burst 25miles upstream dumped 5 inches of rain. No rain here...just high water.........crap.

As always. I had my trusty EDC gun, a ruger lcp. 20200325_190309.jpg

Thanks for the advice, we will be back to the Gulf coast of Florida for Thanksgiving.

We’ve had some fun picture threads lately that have remained mercifully free of bickering or controversy. Let’s keep the good vibes rolling.

I’m hoping this will become a long running thread capturing pictures of some of our favorite outdoor load outs.

Every post must include a mention and/or picture of the gun you carried in the great outdoors that particular outing. This isn’t a general non-firearm gear thread as that’s outside the scope of THR. But if other gear is in the pictures, no problem. BUT THERE HAS TO BE A GUN, or we’ll get shut down. Also, let’s not debate or disparage anyone’s choices. This isn’t the thread to debate the effectiveness of bear spray.

Tell us what you carried, your ammo choice if you like, and maybe the purpose of the outing and load out choice.

I was off work today and had some time to go out for a nice hike. I took my time and enjoyed it. I saw some deer a smooth green snake, a marmot, and all kinds of birds. Weather was great.

Mountain lions are the biggest predator here so I carried a Sig Sauer P220 chambered in 10mm auto. It was loaded with Underwood Ammo 140 gr Extreme Penetrators. The bullets are made by Lehigh but the cartridges are loaded by Underwood.

Normally I am trucking along but I was under a doctor’s orders to keep my heart rate low. So I had time for a few pictures in the woods.

I also carried a WE Knife Co. Chimera knife. It’s a 3.9” S35VN bladed flipper knife. Very handy and very comfortable to use.

And finally I also was using a 48” Rowan Tree walking stick. Rowan is also known as mountain ash. It was made by a man in Ireland and makes for a nice hiking stick.

All in all it was a very peaceful time. I saw no one and just listened to some relaxing music on a single ear bud. Couldn’t have been much better.

So what did you carry into the outdoors today?

Thanks, so peaceful. For a moment I forgot about the firearms and enjoyed the green view.

Just got a new fat tire folding ebike with peddle assist and rode a 26 mile round trip on the rails to trails greenway from Shelby farms to Overton Park. It was great allowing me too get back out with no knee or ankle pain. Mostly like riding thru a tree covered tunnel passing along the Wolf river bottoms to Overton park with the last old growth forest in the area. But the last mile to the park is a very bad part of town on a bike lane on the road. With the protest going on in areas around I decided on firepower over stopping power. So PMR 30 and 3 magazines and pepper spray in bike bag and NA mini 22 mag in watch pocket and a karambit on belt.View attachment 921716 View attachment 921717
How do like the book about Falkands war.

Had to do yard work after my job yesterday so the great outdoors consisted of mowing my lawn. Not the most fun, but life could sure be worse.

I only carry a knife around my yard so no pictures. I did kick up a little fawn that was bedded down in the tall grass portion of my yard. Only ran maybe 20 feet, looked at me like I was a jerk, then bedded down again.

Every year I have a fawn or two and their mums use my unmown portion of my land as a nursery. It’s pretty cute. When I get up and get ready for work they are frequently playing in the yard, running around in circles while their parents eat.

Today I put 28 miles on my bike. Would’ve been wonderful if not for the god awful wind. But it was still pretty.

Today I carried my XDs-45 again and a Hogue 3.5” pocket knife.

I saw a few blue herons, a lot of birds, and I had a marmot sitting on a bolder right outside my door this morning.

The dragonflies like to pace me also and scoot in front of me like dolphins in front of a ship.

It's the Sig Ultra Compact "tribal" edition. Not sure what tribe exactly, and I hate the designs on it but it was $200 cheaper with the designs than without.
I do carry with empty chamber at work nowadays. Probably not a big deal, but I have had occasions where bending and twisting, upside down, etc trying to get under the dash on a car...then later in the day realize the safety had been disengaged.
Then have also had a couple times that some circumstance caused it to fall out or partially out, so I'd rather avoid having the possibility of both those happen at the same time. But I'd rather have it on me with an empty chamber than 20 feet away in my toolbox. If that makes any sense?
ETA... I'm sure I'll get flamed for carrying empty chamber. And for the fact that my carry gun has a 2.75lb trigger. But that's why I'm more careful.

FLAME!

You have been flamed. Carry on.:)

Where in Heaven did you say you are? Seriously picturesque.

We set our camper up next to the lake and watched a green dragonfly stake out his corner of the cat-tails today. Woe to the gnat and competitor in his alley! Only seventy miles away but the dragons are changed.

Ever present in my pocket...

I like it so much I’m going to get another.
Green this time I think!

You really have wonderful views. We have a rails to trails park system that I haunt from Comstock Park to Cadillac. It runs the Muskegon river along its most beautiful part. The Dragon is supposedly being built to connect a few many bike trails across West Michigan.
We love biking! Little Bear isn’t quite big enough to hit the country side though.

Whoa! Don’t let me started on bikes.:D

The view at work today.

This deck is pricey. $75 a board from Brazil. I have a few cut offs in case I need a hard and heavy 1911 grip. The specific gravity is .89 to .92, it floats, but just barely. 1A1BBF62-9DF6-457E-A305-E8021BF7C5FB.jpeg
From a pale Butternut yellow to cinnamon to pink to the black-purple of Walnut. None of these boards are wet or scratched, the color array is just that wide. Brazilian Ipe, I wish I could afford it!

It was kinda hazy out today, yet I am sunburned, sitting in the woods on a deck...

And one little brag.
Not really wildlife, but I’m kinda proud of them. I should have finished my Associates degree in Horticulture.

They won’t quite hold my .32, but it will fit inside.
Tactical flowers!:D
I saved these from my Grandmothers house.
It’s now a bush.

What a great day to be outside!:)
