Would they work in a Maynard tape primer mechanism?

I'm surprised they still make those.

I remember when there was going to be a good Western picture on the tube, my brother and I would stock up on them ...

I am getting geared up to start making caps as well, I bought a sheet of .005 brass dug out my Tap-A-Cap and found a nice cash Legends caps. I think our Walmart still has them in stock. Hey! What do you mean everyone has outgrown cap guns"

Are they going to charge has-mat for them? If they do ,that changes everything. they would be way way too weak as a tape primer. If you use several in a percussion cap ,they can work well in the revolvers. There is a couple of ways to use them so you don't have so much paper in the cup. The paper really messes with how well they work.

Mr.mike 56, use the .005 copper (36 gauge) , they sell it at hobby lobby stores. You can get it cheaper if you use their 40% off coupon. I have used brass andaluminum to make caps...but the copper is by far the best i have used, especially for hotter caps and using H-48 primer formula. Ive even reused hulls.

TWC, thats a horrible price if $8.99. If u want i can get you them for abour $3 bux each. Thats 3 times less or you get 3 times more for your money...however you want to look at it. Lemme know

That's what I was afraid of. I have an M1855 repro musket, the lock of which was made into a working Maynard mechanism by gunsmith John Zimmerman. I'd love to use that as intended. (Of course, it still works fine with regular musket caps.) Somebody needs to come up with a source for Maynard tapes.

Lol mr.woodnbow i try. I made the maynard strips by basically making a larger version of roll cap strips but with. H-48 primer powder. I cut a long strip of paper and spaced out dots with a pencil about .5 an inch apart then i pot a single scoop of H-48 primer mix on each pencil dot...one at a time that is..then pot a drop of thinned Duco cement glue to absorb into the powder...while it was still wet i pressed down on the lump of primer to make a flat dot of primer. Once i had quite a bit of them on the strip i then put a same size strip of rice paper over it ..glued using thinned out duco cement..basically sandwiching the primer dots between regular paper and thin rice paper. Worked really well.

Outlaw I looked up the H-48 primer formula and it looks fun. And tedious. Where do you get the ingredients to make the H-48 primer mix?

Its not tedious at all...its 3 primary ingredients and then a binder..my binder of choosing is nitrocellulose glue Duco cement. You can get all the ingredients in bulk from http://unitednuclear.com/

Looks like we are in for a prolonged cap shortage. I think when primer demand goes wild the manufacturers stop making low demand caps and focus on trying to meet primer demand. Guess we will be learning to make our own as necessary. I ordered a sharpshooter cap maker and a bag of their priming compound. I will try their priming compound, but I guess its worth giving the caps a try as well. What is the shelf life of caps made with caps and with the prime all mix?

Mr.Brewster...the "prime-all" mix they sell is a rip off...you can get soooo much more if you get the ingredients else where. If you decide to get it anyways...stay away from the binder they use as it really sucks. Just use the other 3 main ingredients (it makes the old H-48 primer mix used for decades) and use a binder made from nitrocellulose glue such as Deco cement glue thinned with acetone. Also the way they sell the prime all mix i wouldnt use their sulfur included cuz for all we know its gardening sulfur that has 10% clay earth. It still works...but im picky about quality. Use your own pure sulfur and you need to add .2 grains of baking soda to every 3 grains of sulfur as this will stabalize the mix for waaaay longer shelf life and also protect from atmospheric moisture. You can also add .2-.3 grains of aluminum dust to this mix which will add more burning material being shot out to your powder. Its also how some magnum primers are made stronger. Now if you use the binder i mentioned then you wont have to worry about moisture as the Duco cement glue makes the primer solid and waterproof...it seals it in the cap. Maybe i should do a write up on this? Dunno if it would be allowed listing the ingredients on this forum. I did make a write up previously tho but using roll caps...its in a link in one of my above posts

Thanks. So basically mix up everything but the binder, fill the cap, and add it drop of duco? Have a tube on hand already, so easy to experiment with.

There will be four bags with the prime-all. Tow big bages and two small bags. The small bag with a off-white powder is their binder .You will have a lot of frustration If you use it. Like the Kid says leave it out and use some other binder. I have used the Duco Cement.It works fine. I like to mainly use shellac flakes dissolved into denatured alcohol. Works very well. Use either of these binders for the toy pistol caps or they will fall out. If using the toy caps you can lift the dots right off the paper. I have used as many as 15 dots in a cap cup Kid I think I want the barrel.

Damn man. I know when something is way beyond my capabilities, and this is certainly it. I would buy Maynard tapes if somebody made and sold them commercially. A good place to sell them would be at the N-SSA Nationals, when they start up again. (This would give the maker plenty of time to get ready.)

Yep. But after i put the drop of duco i let it dry a bit but not completely...i then put a rice paper disk of 5/16inch over the powder and compress it with an allen wrench or dowel. Then i add another drop of glue. This makes for one great cap....it also adds extra fuel to burn and shoots it directly to the black powder and ensures ignition
