Porting: Why do people hate them?

Like many have said, I wouldn't prefer porting on a SD handgun, especially a CC one. I prefer that those be as simple as possible.

However, with a range toy I don't see that it matters much. It may take you one or two more minutes to clean. Big deal.

I use good hearing protection. Shooting 44 magnums out of a ported revolver does not make me more blind nor more crazy than I already am. :)

Maybe porting makes more noise in an enclosed building, and that's a big maybe. Maybe the reflection does it but also I could see comb filtering happening as well

Porting doesn't cause extra powder to be in the round, it's exactly the same amount of blast and a gun shot is not directional.
Muzzle devices have a huge impact on noise to the shooter. Shoot an AR with a birdcage and then put a comp on it. I put a comp on my M&P15 and had to upgrade my muffs to keep from having to use plugs too. It doesn't change the amount of powder or pressure being vented to the atmosphere but it does change the direction it travels when released. Porting does the same thing.

I never got much noticable change after porting. Not really worth it to me, however, our shop ported many customers guns.
I ported a .45 Commander and its slide. Ended up grinding splines on the end of tje barrel to fo give lead and bullet lube a way out. And it worked great!

Mag Na Port shows that the cast bullet lube is getting to the end of the barrel. :D

When firing a M29 double action, with maximum loads using 296 powder & 250 gr cast, i need a ported barrel. Why double action? Because single action gets boring.

Speaking of boring. My Ruger SBH was ported also. Reduced muzzle flip a lot. Target shooting with this one was a pain. Load & unload 1 shell at a time. :cuss:

Several years ago a local shop had a 6" model 19 with Magnaport on the barrel and he had to keep reducing the price until he almost gave it away to get it sold. No one wanted it. Other than that it was a nice gun.

I had a pair of 44 Mags. A heavier Ruger SRH unported and a ported Raging Bull. The recoil and muzzle flip is much less on the Raging Bull. I didn't notice anymore muzzle flash or powder blast. The ports are behind the sights. I favor ports on hard recoiling pistols if done correctly.

Did I say they didn't? The less noise/muzzle blast the better.
In essence you did.;)
You wrote: "Hope you're saving up for hearing aids." in response to Styx' post. Your post implies he would need hearing aids because of his preference for ported barrels vs unported. Therefore he would not need hearing aids if he preferred to shoot unported barrels. Understand?

Maybe if the porting fans can't handle the recoil move to a smaller caliber?
Or those that dislike ported barrels can MYOB.;)

I DO MMOB until some jackass sits right next to me with a 338 with a muzzle break and the concussive force makes me get up up and leave the bench

Yup me too.
But since the OP is referring to PISTOLS with ported barrels the thread ought to stay about pistols with ported barrels.

Pistols with ported barrels are just as LOUD..........and my luck always has one of those folks occupying the empty space net to me..............

I have a Springfield V16 .45 Super and a Tanfoglio 9mm and .40 with compensators When I shoot them shooters near me generally evacuate which suits me just fine :)

I believe in porting. My S&W Performance Center Shield 2 is ported and I love to shoot it. Usually Hydra Shoks or HSTs, but for long practice sessions, my Federal FMJs shoot to same POA. I also have a Colt Mark IV, that I built for pins and IPSC. It has a Centaur Systems Quadracomp, and for practice, the comp mostly adds weight to the end of the barrel, as my light 185 gr load is not producing enough gas to notice. However my "major" 200 gr load offers a noticeable difference between my standard and comped barrels on the same gun. I remember wishing I had ordered a blue version of the same comp for my Delta Elite, which would have made much better use of the ports, being rather high pressure, which makes comps shine. The third member of my ported guns is a .45-70 Contender Super 16 barrel with a full rifle Magnaport treatment. Is there a difference-absolutely. Is it enough-no. I went from being able to shoot only two rounds of 300 gr factory Win or Rem, to being able to shoot about 15. But, it is still far too vicious for me, and hasn't been shot in decades. Since I am always wearing ear-pro, I don't notice any problems with noise.

If the noise bothers you, you should be wearing ear protection anyway. Nobody should dictate what others shoot.

I don't see the advantage of porting on "standard calibers" for rifles or handguns. Magnum or high recoil calibers, ya maybe it's worth it. Years ago I purchase new a Glock 23C. Besides the extra noise and flash the thing I hated the most was the unburned powder hitting me in the face and eyes.

Try extending your arms.:D
If you are getting unburned powder in your face and eyes your technique needs work.
<-----17C, 19C, 22C, 23C.......... and none have ever flung any sort of debris in my face or anyone who has shot my C's.

Until you set up right next to me and that concussive force gives me a headache.

I can see your issue with that, Like CraigC says, it depends on the situation. It happens at times at my range but usually those guys don't shoot much.

I've actually had two revolvers that were ported. One was a 6" Smith & Wesson Model 29 in 44mag. I bought the gun used and it was Magna-Ported. The muzzle flip was substantially less that with my buddies 6" Smith & Wesson Model 629 in 44mag. I ended up selling that gun when I got into the .41 magnum love affair. I have three and one of them is a Taurus 415 with a 2.5" barrel with three factory ports on either side of the front sight as you can see in the picture below. This small gun is a lot to handle but those ports really tame the muzzle flip, especially with the full power loads. I have thought about sending my two Ruger Redhawks in for the Magna-Port treatment as well. The larger (7.5" barrel length) is not so bad with the pistol scope on top of the barrel. The custom 4", in my opinion would benefit from porting. Like so many others here (and any one with any sense) I wear hearing protection, even when I am hunting, so any increase in noise with the ported barrel is a moot point for me.

He is sponsored by Magnaport, but he takes the time and effort to discuss and show a comparison of ported and unported using high-frame-rate video:

Towards the end he also does a muzzle-flash comparison in low-light (night) conditions.

It was really interesting to see his trigger finger come off the trigger on the revolvers after reset and slap the front of the inside of the trigger guard. I certainly wouldn't question his practices, he has the trophies, I would just think that even though he wasn't speed shooting in this demonstration, his muscles would just do the same thing no matter the rate of fire, and I would think for somebody looking to shave every 100th/sec off his time his finger would never come off the trigger during a course of fire.

Just an observation is all.

Definitely not saying he should do differently
