Longish Range Handgun

That is an interesting choice. The new Ruger is in my price range. I've not heard of anyone reloading 5.7, but I suppose it's possible. I think my manual has it in the pistol section.

I'm probably going 357. Its versatile enough to use for other things should I want to try. I'm going to try my M&P9 at 50 to see how it goes first though. Thanks for all the advice.

Doesn't fit your profile but clearly the best longish range handgun is the 5.7x28. Accurate well past 100 yards.

The 5.7x28 fired from a handgun is ballistically identical to the .22 Magnum Rimfire fired from a rifle. From a rifle, I'd say 125 yds. would be about maximum range.

35W

I've used them since they came out. Great 100 yard varmint gun. Yes you can reload it. I wouldn't unless you just have to. For 20-25 dollars like they normally cost per 50 with a v-max bullet. Its easily the biggest pia of any cartridge ive loaded (probably 50 different cartridges right now)

Ballistics are pretty close 22 magnum. But the ammo is loaded closer to a match grade than any ive found for 22 magnum or even 22. (ive used a magnum since I was a kid. Everything from a marlin 25 to a p30 to a single six. 22 mag ammo isn't stellar. Then i used 17 hmr when it came out) the difference isn't ballistics its the ammo.

Definately not doing it at 50 yards with my current 9mm. I gotta get bigger targets too. Some shots hit the target, some not, but I have no idea where the misses went.

I have no trouble hitting @ 150 w either my 9mm or my 45. My j frame also, but that's a bit more challenging.

Last week I took my air pistol to the range to conserve ammo and get proper wind practice.

I was able to hit 8.4oz red bulls at 60 yards, in crosswinds. (Having an adjustable williams rear sight helped immensely)

Interesting. I may have to open up my parameters. I have dies for 30-30 already. I don't know that I would enjoy shooting a rifle cartridge in a handgun, but 30-30 doesn't seem too bad. 308 is likely right out though. If nothing else I could use the more aerodynamic 30 caliber bullets in the 30-30.

Muzzlebrakes help recoil immensely.

With a good muzzle brake recoil becomes noticeably less.
This is not an Encore (you can chamber the 6.5x47 Lapua in it), but it gives you a idea.
The Contender/G-2 is a lighter platform than the Encore or the XP-100, so all things being equal, the Contender will have more felt recoil shooting a 30-30 and a Encore chambered exactly the same.
If this is for hunting, I would want to know max distance and what kind of game.
If this is for paper and steel, I would go with a different cartridge than the 30-30 myself

6XC (just a bit smaller than the 243 Winchester, and very similar to the 6mm Creedmoor) with 107 grain SMK's.

“If” we’re talking about hunting with a conventional revolver ......it’s pretty hard to beat the 460 S&W. Yes it’s heavy, and yes it’s loud.....but, it’s difficult to ignore 200 grain bullets @2200+ fps. With aforementioned loads, it is much more comfortable to shoot than my 629 (44 mag). With scope or smallish moa red dot sight.....easily a 200 yard handgun. If I weren’t old and blind, I would still be using standard iron sights.

I’m pushing 400 grain cast, powder coated bullets well over 1400 fps. From a rest, using my red dot sight....I’m getting 2 1/2” (best) to 3 1/2” 4 shot groups at 100 yards. Only using 4 shot groups, as I have one chamber that throws the shot out of group......every time. Hoping to address and correct this issue soon! I sight in a bit high at 100 yards, and merely compensate for close shots or for my imposed limit of 150 yards. There’s no big game I’m likely to encounter that can’t be cleanly taken taken out to 150 yards with this combo! memtb
