New York hunters

Received this email from Cornell University: the hunt was in January last time I remember.

Hello Hunters,

I plan to active the link for the CornellUniversity Hunting Permit test and application on the September 1, barring any unforeseen delays. The close of the application period is September 30th.

Our program’s goal is to reduce unacceptable damage to University resources and plant collections, promote the teaching and research mission of the University, and to reduce associated human-health and safety risks such as Lyme disease and deer-vehicle collisions. This is only accomplished if we reduce deer populations through a focus on harvesting antlerless deer.

A few updates and notices:

  • We will not be participating in the new “holiday hunt” (Dec. 26- Jan. 1) DEC initiated this year.
  • We will not be applying for DMAP tags this year. They have been of limited use and success.
  • Use of rifles are again allowed in Tompkins County for the regular season. Unless the State Legislature moves to extend their use for deer and bear, this will be the final year of that pilot program.
    • Rifles have always been allowed during the January DMFA season.
  • Before you (re)apply to our program, carefully review our rules and regulations.
  • COVID: If you need to approach anyone in the field, maintain 6’ of distance or don a mask.
  • Deer Hunting Program Areas:Please review the main website, associated maps, and site reservation pages for details. Individuals trespassing or illegally hunting in unauthorized areas will be prosecuted.
  • Unretrieved Hunting Stands and Blinds: If we are forced to remove a stand or blind that was left in the field beyond the 1-week grace period post hunting season, or which is not in compliance with our labeling or installation regulations, that owner will be responsible for reimbursing us for our expenses.
  • Hunter Test and Permit: After reading through the program website, rules, and regulations, hunters must pass an online test to demonstrate that they have read and understood program rules, regulations, and expectations. Once completed, you will be directed to complete your permit application.
  • Online Deer Management System: Approximately 2-3 weeks after passing the test and completing the permit application, you will be notified of your approval for the Cornell Deer Management Program via email. You then will be required to create an online account for our Deer Management System to print out your permit, maps, manage all hunting reservations, and report hunting and harvest activity. Hunters must make reservations for specifics sites and days through the Deer Management System to hunt. Reservations must also be removed if hunters are not able to hunt on the reserved day. Repeated failure to remove unused reservations will result in the hunting permit being revoked.
  • Rewards and incentives: As in past years, we are providing a reward for veteran hunters of our program who have harvested an antlerless deer in the prior year. Those hunters will be allowed to make site reservations 7 days in advance as opposed to the usual 3-day reservation window.
  • Hunting Activity and Harvest Reporting: All hunters must report harvest and hunting activity within three days after hunting for each reservation, even if you did not hunt. You will not be able to make additional reservations until reporting activity is completed.
  • Small Game Hunting: Small game hunting is not allowed under your CornellHunting Program Permit.
  • Non-compliance: If you observe any illegal activity, please notify an En-Con DEC Officer. Please report program non-compliance issues to[email protected]
Hunting program details and the link to apply for the on-line permit can be found on our deer management program website at Apply Now – CornellBotanicGardens. Note the close of the application period is September 30th.

Best wishes on a safe, enjoyable, and successful deer hunting season,

Michael Roberts

**seems like it could be fun to get together to do**

Would be cool, that's not to far either isn't cornel in Ithaca. I'd bet everybody and there brother around the area Signs up.

I find it funny tho people love the deer and don't want them killed until it affects them. We had a Next door neighbor one time bitch about use hangs a buck up to aged one year, he was a nice older recently retired guy. He went on about no reason to kill them and so on. Few weeks later he buys his retirement new truck, guy never had a new truck and worked 40+ years to buy this one. Well a week or so later he hits a deer or two on 84 just were it crosses 17m, i was in the fire department then and when he saw me he said kill everyone of those dam deer.

Yes Ithaca.

When I went in 2019 I saw nobody else there. With covid though, who knows.

I picked up 100 hornady 147gr eld-m bullets today some I'll make a load up for my 6.5 prc these will reach out better then the 140 speer hotcor but really won't make any difference hunting. I've got to get some other loads together and eight in and checks few rifles. Rifle season will be here soon.

True, very true, I still have loads to test out for all 3 calibers.

Was out at a friend's house just got home and unloaded the SUV. I took out a few more pieces of reloading equipment and a few supplies 100 lrp, 2 die sets and some .308 bullets. He just loaded up his first 8 bullets, 62 gr hornandy hpbt's nut wanted to see my process for reloading, demonstrated one and set him on the journey while I supervised and answered questions. Was a fun trip all the way arround.

He will also be loafing 3030, 303 Brit and 3006. He brought out him enfield mark 3, sporterized unfortunately, but said that milsurp stocks are still available on line which piqued his interest, I gave him as much information about his rifle as I could as I'm not an expert, then explained that reloading the Brit it's best to only size slightly smaller than the chamber dimension to preserve brass life.

My friend has been getting reloading components over the lady couple of months, just hot as 2230, has imr 3031 comming and has tac on hand, not a bad start.

With a thread title like "New York Hunters" I figured there would be discussion about the very recent big changes the D.E.C. has made. Mainly the establishment of a 9 day antlerless season from Sept. 11th to the 19th in a bunch of WMU's along with extending hunting hours to 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Just heard of it myself a couple days ago. Too much info to type out here but just Google something like " NYS deer hunting changes" and it can be found on a lot of web sites including the official DEC announcement. Looks like they are trying hard to reduce the doe population in many areas. I'll be trying my luck in areas 8A & 8N and currently looking for a processor if I get one.

I heard about these changes but haven't had much time to research which wmu's it effects. Been real busy working, home repairs and fixing cars that need it

I've haven't got my licence yet so I've not seen the changes, my is good at not getting word out of changes. Having to wear Orange/pink some won't like, I'll have to read how much we need. I'll have to probably find a vest that fits, I usually were a orange benni. Will this apply to muzzleloader, there considered antiques here but are they a firearm now.

The best thing I see it the hunting time change letting us shoot 30 minutes before and after light. This is huge for me and probably many others, depending how the time zone is and how the sun comes up we can see 30-45 no minutes before legal sun up and win down. I've had to pass on so many deer because it was just past legal light, me and my buddy watched a monster one year for 20 minutes after light.
The other big thing is the early rifle in September, I am lucky I hunt in m3 and it's on the list, very happy to fill more doe tags. This really making me want a drilling to carry for these days for small game and deer/bear.

The extended late muzzleloader is nice, wish they would just go to Feb 28 tho there's really not many hunters that would hunt after new years anyways.

We decided to have the BBQ on October 24th.
1pm at Hawkens Pond Park in Windsor.
There is a covered pavilion with a fireplace and bathrooms.
Everyone on the forum is invited. It would be a great time to get to know each other on a personal level.

If interested in attending please let us know so we can have enough food for everyone.

Huge change right there , could not believe my eyes when I received the new regulations from the DEC . We have been missing the best hunting for years . It's going to feel strange coming out of the woods so late . I am guessing the DEC will be getting some calls about late shooting , folks that don't hunt likely won't know about the new rule .

True enough,

Ny is famous for hiding new rules or just not telling anyone. Any new regs should be given to you when you by your licence and sign you read it.
I hunt fields a lot so the extra 30 minutes each morning and afternoon is a huge deal, then smart bucks know when it's safe to come out. I'd expected some big deer this year taken.

I didn’t find out about it until after I got all my doe tags for an area where that hunt isn’t a thing (8H).

I got excited about that hunt and then saw that it doesn't cover 8H. Very surprised at that. I always see multiple deer with an hour of sitting at my buddy's property in 8H. They're like roaches there. I think it must be that 8H has denser population along the north edge of it than do the other zones that are included in that hunt. Those towns may not want early hunting.
