Favorite Black powder firearm- What is it?

100 grains of powder behind a .690 ball turns a gun that weighs less than 6 pounds into quite a little thumper. Before somebody says the Pedersoli 12 gauge weighs 7 pounds, mine was made before they started chrome lining the bores and using removeable chokes. My barrels are thin. Much too thin to thread for chokes.

I’m looking at this little 5.5lbs 12g (Flinter version tho)
Great little woods Walker for Squirrels, rabbit and With a Pumkin ball- it should do short range deer gettin.
Yet-I’m sure it’s gunna kick a tad! 80D0A944-ADB5-40EF-86CD-9575D5512BBE.jpeg

The 1887 Winchester lever shotgun is really nice. Reminds me of some 60 years ago visiting Knotts Berry Farm. There was and Old West section with a wooden carving of a Mexican Bandito holding a real one of these (sawed off). . All the kids tried to pry it away but it was welded to the supports inside the statue. It was left outside and had rusted solid it self. Wonder if its still there?

The only BP I own is a Remington Omega .50cal. Stainless, synthetic, 209 primer.

Was shooting sabots and .45 STX bullets. Switched over to LSWC 335gr .50.

Nominal load of 90gr. Gives best accuracy. Have tried 100, 110, 120, 130, 140 gr loads. Groups opened considerably.

The 90gr works with ffg, 777, Pyrodex, equally well.

I have filled .44mag brass with ffg and a round ball. Fun to play with, accuracy was terrible.

Most fun ever, when a teenager, a local hardware was closing. The owner sold me 6 boxes of paper hull, BP, #4 20ga for $0.75 a box.

Took them rabbit hunting, using Grandma's 1935 Western Field 20ga SxS. Most fun ever.

Being in "biz" i have "owned" more than i care to put in print. I have owned and sold many multiples of the following and recently liquidated what was left. Based on 3+ decades of sales and comments i offer this off this very abbreviated off the e cuff recommendation for shooting or investment.

Any original CW item (or before) in good shape. These have gone from gold to platinum
DGW Tenn. Mtn Rifles ( early ones with conversion locks/kit add a bunch)
Navy arms 1803 Harpers Ferry FL (still a sleeper but rising fast)
Any US Springfield 50/70 or 45/70 trapdoors or Remington R/Bs (semi sleepers)
Lyman Great Plains (almost out of sight)
Almost any Pedersoli or Uberti BP item
TC products with the Seneca and Patriot in the lead. (TC was great when small parts were cheap and readily available).
Any SHARON ML rifle or shotgun!!
Almost any Kibler, Hatfield, browning product and of course
the Ruger Old Army ( almost too valuable to shoot lately) .

I left out non factory, custom or non arsenal originals as I have found them to be a crap shoot.

There are tons more but these are the ones that stand out over these many years.

Most all above are appreciating faster than the dollar declines. Your comments on this impromptu list. good or bad welcome.

When I started this thread I asked for favorites and Charges of favorites

Are these your Favorites?

That is a real one. I first shot my dads model 12 at a turkey shoot when I was 11 and when we got home he gave it to me.

I'm seeing more sxs bp guns than I expected to see.
Here's my Navy Arms 12ga sxs. This Jake fell to 90grains- 2f under a vegetable fiber wad, and 1¼oz #4 shot. 20160405_073427.jpg
My old t/c Hawken .54 is a favorite. I built it in '83. It took the biggest buck that I ever got... 20161201_114659.jpg

I've had about as much fun as you can have with my '58 Remington revolvers. They're stupid accurate and so much fun to shoot. 20160918_154306.jpg

If I must choose a favorite, it would be my custom. 45 flintlock built by my friend and mentor. I finished the gun myself and added my crude masonic engraving. 20161218_210914.jpg 20200919_112902.jpg

My list was a suggestion based on experience and
If you can have many favorites, yes!!! ALL performed well and value keeps going way up. Also NO customer complaints Like some. All look and feel right. There are may BP arms out there. My narrowed no .3 Fav is a Pedersoli Brown Bess "officers model" with the 30" barrel. Fun as musket or shotgun, Well made and looks good as they factory "browned" this one. Not sure if still in production and is on my "never sell". number 2 would be the Ped 12 double. Light fast and reliable. Truth be known number 1 is my 1854 .54 Austrian Wanzl conversion Jagerstutzen (mit brass tipped rod) Hoot to shoot!!

You are very lucky. 12 g Originals in good shape are out of sight. 10's not far behind. Not sure about the chinese knock offs

Farmer, have you tried shooting .45LC with a conversion cylinder out of your '58 Sheriff? It brings it up to a whole new level. I have the 6 shot Taylor's, hand loaded .45LC with Starline Brass, 35gr Graf's 3F, 250gr bullet. So much fun it oughta be illegal...

No I haven't. I have a couple of revolvers in .45colt already.
I would if I stumbled upon a conversion cylinder

A couple of old favorites, Navy Arms, Uberti made, the sheriffs model is 1963 vintage, the New Model Army is also an Uberti, made for Navy Arms in 1969. Stock except for the front sights were replaced with taller versions for point of aim elevation. The rear sights are slightly modified as well. For many years the older gun was my constant companion, it’ll be one of the last I ever own.

This is the gun that started it all for me. It's a Rigarmi 58 Remington I bought brand new in 1969 when I was 12. I probably put it through more hell than any original went through during the war. It was already rough looking so I defarbed it and aged it to look more like an original I once had.

I'd kill a small animal for a ROA...
I have this one on the way, according to theory. This is my "divorce gun". Box and all, fired 25 times or so, hoping this will be a new favorite.

DAGNABBIT! UPS misread the address, for one that doesn't exist, and said, oh Ok, NEW address from you, so we'll try a delivery some time else. I want to pick it up at the Hub, which is LITERALLY 1/2 mile from my house, but not until they make a delivery attempt! DENIED, I am! Insert favorite "colorful metaphors" here.

45 cal. Kentucky Rifle. It was made by a very good friend. While he was working on it and wanted to add some ivory inlays he asked me what I thought about the rifle so far. I told him it was done and leave it along. It looked beautiful.

To my surprise he gave it to me. In 50 years of shooting and buying and selling my guns this is the only one I've kept. It's a real tack driver. I'll have to post a picture. I don't have one right now.

Favs are Civil War carbines or shorter flintlocks like Jaeger, Brown Bess trade, Baker; stuff like that.
Here three musketoons that are keepers. I'm refinishing a musketoon stock now; that one is not ready for a pic. First musketoon was a Pedersoli with a .582-ish bore. Taught me about the need for a proper sized minie. Next two were Parker Hales. One is really good in that it shoots to the sights; just need to aim low. Service type loads are stout and I try to shoot 50 minies at a time so my reduced load is 42 grains of 3F. That and thin walled minies are good up to 100 yards on paper.

Edit for Lnf: All are 1861 Enfield repros. Parker Hales were made in England. Came late to the party, far as BP guns goes so I paid top dollar for the used PH's. Bought the Pedersoli new from Dixie. Breech face to muzzle measures about 23 1/2"- ish inches.
