Carrying Loose Rounds?

Easy. Rifle cartridge belt. State of the art technology, circa 1860s. $6.99

Not a belt but I have been using those butt stock slip ons for years. Put a little slit in it to go over swivel stud. Keeps it in place.

I have been using a wallet style 10 round for years. I only had one that I could read the label. Side pocket by Evans made in U.S.A. they have belt loops or I usually put in my backpack. Great item, camo and soft sided.

I tend to carry 10 rounds total. The rifles I use the most are 5+1. I just put 2 spare rounds loose in each of my jacket pockets. If not wearing a jacket in the orange vest pockets. Some of my go-to rifles use 5 round mags, when using those there is a spare loaded 5 round mag in a pocket.

I've tried the carriers that fit over the stock, but that changes the balance of the rifle and IMO it is too easy for ammo to fall out as the rifle is carried.

When I used to hunt I carried 50 rounds of rifle ammo. I used a 270 Winchester

My immediate ammo was in a 10 round wallet I kept in my right front pocket

The rest were stowed I plastic MTM slip top cases in my back pack.

I only did 1 day hunts so my needs were minimal.

Back pack had
45 rounds of ammo
Para cord
Knives/hatchet
Lunch/snacks

If I was to start back again today I would include fire making supplies, medical, tourniquet'(s)

I assume you’re talking deer. I fill the mag and if I think about it, I may carry a few in my pocket. I’m going hunting, not off to war. Unless it’s something like prairie dogs I’ve never needed more than a few rounds.

FWIW, I don’t shoot at moving deer.

I have a "Hunter" brand 10 rnd wallet model: 27-159. Quite suitable for .308 30-06 size cartridges.
It's probably 50 years old but except for some verdigris as good as new, no doubt due to being used 1-2 weeks per year and then only when I'd drawn a regular rifle tag.

One of the Uncle Mike's folding belt sliders work well (<$20 at Sportsman's Warehouse). I also have some nicer leather flap ones, plus use an old Mauser charger clip pouch on occasion.

Sometimes I use a real small belt pack for loose rounds but last few years I went with a small belt thingy that holds the rounds in elastic loops and clips closed when not in use. Here it is with open some 30-30 hunting handloads... .. and closed: ..

This is my preference as well.

I have tried numerous methods and the buttstock ammo sleeve won out. They haven’t let me down yet.

The wallets?
Lost one on the trail. Rifle had 5 rounds loaded though.
Another dumped all my ammo in a canyon as I pulled it out “just to make sure” on a trail. It unsnapped and jingle jingle jingle all the way down.

The belt?
Took a tumble down a hill with about 20 - .270 rounds in it. Got stabbed in a neat row across the bottom of my belly with 270 rounds. None broke the skin. That belt went in the campfire.

Loose in a pocket?
Too disorganized.
If I have magazines then pocket carry is fine.

A simple leather belt slide with loops for extra rounds , slides on the belt and your belt loops keep it in place .

I also have a Uncle Mikes Butt Stock shell holder if you want to keep extra on the rifle / shotgun ... I like it because the extra ammo stays with the gun.

Remington had the black plastic bullet holders in their boxes of ammo which can be separated into 10 round holders, I just stick one of those in a jacket pocket, the loose rounds are too noisy.

I use an old Hunters Leather belt pouch similar to the one below.

One round in my Ruger #1. Two more in my pants pocket.

I’ve never run out of ammo.

I deliberately disperse ammo all over the place.

4 in the gun with an empty chamber. (I don't load the chamber until I'm ready to shoot an animal.)
A few loose in various pockets.
5 in an external pocket on my day pack.
Some in my clothes bag.
Some in with my food/camp kitchen.
A 20-rd plastic case in my side by side.
Another 20-rd plastic case left in my truck.

While I agree that hunting is not a battle field, carrying upwards of 30+ rds does a couple of things,
1. If I lose a pack or bag, I haven't lost all of my ammo.
2. If my rifle take a serious drop, I have enough to check/reset zero on my scope.

I've never viewed my rifle as a repeater; the magazine just holds additional ammo, not multiple shots on the same animal.

I use a cartridge wallet like @22250Rem. Works well and I don't need to fidget around for a cartridge .

These things are pretty handy- I just put my ammo in the pocket, whether its a few rounds or a detachable magazine. I like it because I can unload my rifle, put the ammo in this thing, and not worry about it when its time to go back out. I keep my license in it too.

A couple of loose rounds in a pocket that won't poke me in the junk.

I have a little pouch with slots on the cheek piece/butt but I almost never carry more than fit in my gun.

Yup, but also handled 30-06 for me as well.

All the rifles except my 22LR are long gone now but I can always carry a week or three worth of 22lr if needed.

Pulled the waistband out of a pair of underwear and sewed four loops on my packsack for four rounds.

It was my GF’s underwear, so the pink stands out on my cameo pack. She only had 7 pair, so one day a week now no panties, so it’s a game of sorts, too.
