How did all this concealed = evil business get started in the first place?

The Second Amendment to the Constitution makes NO mention concealment.

Why don’t concealment laws apply to other Constitutionally protected items like Bibles and newspapers?

Was it just a convenient contrivance to get around the 2A?

Why do gun owners accept this restriction without question?

Just curious, OS

Way back when only bad guys hid their guns. Respectable people kept them out where everyone could see them :)

Somewhere along they way public opinion got dismantled through the usual fear and hype.

Not all of us accept it without question :)

It's a good question, wish I knew the answer.

The answer is long and tied in with the sweep of American history. Anti-concealed carry laws emerged during Reconstruction as part of Jim Crow and gradually came to be adopted by the overwhelming majority of states by WWII. The concealed pistol was something an outlaw or mugger would use, and had a bad connotation. It's only been in modern times that these laws have been repealed or replaced with shall-issue licensing. State by state, it's really been nothing short of a quiet revolution. There's a map around that shows the adoption of shall issue laws. Now only a few states still have the old laws in place

Someone could really write a whole book on this subject.

Carrying ≠ paranoia, but we're getting branded that way. Concealment just adds nefariousness. So now you have a paranoid action coupled with wicked behavior and you end up with evil.

AFS is right; we are being defined by the enemy, but to our credit, all evidence is to the contrary.

To give the divil it's due there have been restrictions placed on both bibles and newspapers as well. Those restrictions are more sharply defined and limited in scope but in place none the less.

EX: a sequestered jury is not allowed newspapers.
the prohibition on Bibles in some schools and public places has been upheld by the courts.

This concealment restriction has morphed into such ridiculous extremes that even plainly visible holstered pistols and slung rifles are considered concealed, and therefore illegal in many states.

A policeman once warned me that a rifle hanging in a gun rack in the window of my pick-up truck was concealed! He pulled me over to tell me this.
When I asked him how this was possible since he saw it from the side of the road, he said, “Because it is concealed in part”. In other words, he could not see the inch wide sections of barrel and stock that the gun rack was covering and that made it an illegal “concealed” weapon.

Rediculous!

I think a lot of the negativity derives from the connotation that the word "concealed" gives to the matter of firearms carry. To many it's like we're hiding something, rather than keeping a gun "out of sight".

What do you say we coin that phrase as a public relations move. Law adiding people carry a handgun "out of sight"; criminals "conceal" their weapons. Semantics.............:uhoh:

Why does cheap construction = Saturday Night Special = evil?

Why does 17.9" barrel on a shotgun = evil?

Why does a shoulder stock on a pistol = evil?

Any term is grist to the anti's propaganda mill.

Actions are evil, not things.

Come to think of it, most things that are legal but still upsetting to lots of people like pornography are legal ONLY when kept out of general public view.

Why is it the opposite for handguns?

It's not concealed = evil.

It's GUNS = evil, concealed, unconcealed or locked in your safe.

The people who oppose concealed carry oppose GUNS, regardless of HOW or even WHETHER they're carried.

Same reason it is bad to eat meat now, it's bad to be conservative, it's bad to drive anything other than a little crackerbox, it's bad to have morals, it's bad to love God, it's bad to dislike illegal aliens, it's bad to shoot a criminal, it's bad to think ill thoughts about criminals, it's bad to think criminals should get what they deserve, it's bad to say what you think....on and on. It is the whole decline of our nation due to the fact it became trendy to be a liberal years ago in the 80s.

I would think that they would want you to conceal them instead of carrying them open to prevent "spooking the flock"

That may be true, but I've had gun owners tell me that they think concealed guns are wrong. I think it does boil down to what Texas Rifleman said: "Way back when only bad guys hid their guns. Respectable people kept them out where everyone could see them."

When someone is hiding anything, we tend to mistrust them. It's natural to be wary of what you can not see or know.

The thing is, concealed handguns are not really concealed in most states. I have a license to carry. The government knows I carry a gun. Whenever, I interact with an LEO, I need to disclose the fact that I carry and if I don't, my drivers license will. List of concealed licensees are public record. The guns may be hidden from view, but the fact that we carry and who we are is not concealed.

Once you've demonstrated the ability to create arbitrary laws based on nonsensical definitions, then you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want to your subjects (a precursor to full-blown doublethink, which has already taken root by now).

The funny thing about being "conservative" is that there is so much that needs to be changed now because of the innumerable triumphs of the so-called "liberals" (really socialists). We need to learn how to play with words like they do (although we prefer the plain and simple truth), and become the new "liberals" and "progressives" who wish to change and reform the country according to our vision. For example, if it is bad to have morals, then let's constantly insinuate that gun control is a moral issue that robs us of our liberty. About the only thing that's worked in our favor of late, almost completely under the radar and quite ironically in the context of this thread, is the now-widespread adoption of shall issue concealed carry laws by individual states. Now that's the kind of liberalism I like. :D

When someone is hiding anything, we tend to mistrust them. It's natural to be wary of what you can not see or know.

Then we should do as our opponents do and make it a privacy issue (that's one way they help illegal aliens and other criminals, for example).

Of course those same people wouldn't hesitate to call the cops on you if you carried openly.

I Open Carry every day and have had the cops called only once and that was by a deputy jail guard who was unaware of the law. The cop that responded knew the law and did not have an issue with Open Carry. The vast majority of people are totally unaware of what is going on around them.
