Ruger SR 22 pistols any good?

No I'm not talking about the dressed up 10/22:banghead:

I'm very interested in the ruger sr 22 pistol. Having fondled both the 22/45 and the SR22 I've found that I just like the feel SR22!

The reason I want the SR22 and not the Sig mosquito or Walther p22 is because I have HEARD that the SR will chug anything ammo you put through it.

The one thing stopping me from buying this gun though is incidents like this

I've also heard of the slide just flying right off during shooting.

I understand that this problem could have been remedied already, however I'm not gonna buy a gun just to have it sent back.

So for those of you that own this gun, has this issue been fixed? If so is there anyway to tell the difference between models that have this problem (Serial numbers, markings etc.) and ones that don't?

I have both and like them. The SR22 is a fun gun. My 22-45 has a pac-lite barrel and is very accurate .No problems with either and I shoot the hell out of both...........
 
I just took mine out for the first time yesterday. Great results. Tried a variety of ammo and it all worked fine. I even went thru a mag full of subsonic ammo without a hitch. So from subsonic to hypersonic it didn't know the difference.
 
Not sure if the issues have been fixed, I've seen a couple of posts about the issue on a few different forums and in a few youtube videos.

If I remember correctly Ruger claimed that it ran a batch of takedown latches that wasn't cooled properly and were brittle. So maybe the issue is already fixed. Somebody else may know more information.
 
I've had two SR22s and have had no mechanical problems with either, #1 @ ~2k rounds and #2 @ ~1k rounds.

Both pretty much run any ammo I've tried.....except, American Eagle 40g HV

Too be fair I've had issues with this ammo in many other .22s(even my 10/22's) and its always the same problem.....failing to chamber. Most guns I've tried with this ammo, for whatever reason, seem to have trouble "picking the next round up, off the mag"...

I have one and eventhough i have others i cant seem to put this thing down, for its size it is accurate and has digested everything i put through it. i have had a ftf when its dirty but i keep a small bottle of oil in my vbag and just squirt it a bit and shoot it wet. :D
 
Reportedly good pistols, better than the Walther and SIG. However, the MKIII will hands-down be significantly more accurate. It just depends on what you want and how much accuracy you need.

Once I got through the first 400-500rds, my P22 has been flawless with everything I feed it. Probably at least 5000rds worth. It's just not much good for anything but short range plinking.
 
I have seen quite a few running like champs at the range and was thinking highly of them until this past weekend. One of the shooters had the breaking take down latch that Kiln spoke about.

Hopefully Ruger has this issue resolved.
 
I've owned one for a few months and have tried several brands of ammo. Other than two or three duds it has run flawlessly. Just bang, bang, bang with whatever I loaded it with.

I didn't expect it to give target pistol accuracy and it doesn't but the biggest part of that problem is me. Shaky hand and old eyes. One surprise I found is that the cheapest of the cheap ammo, Federal bulk, is one of the more accurate ammo brands I've shot in it.

I think will pick one up after I'm done paying for my semester's tuition (College Sophomore)

Are there any good quality holsters for them? I've seen some cheapo looking nylon ones but if something like a Galco Classic lite exists for them I'll spring for that no problem!
 
I like the SR22 so well I bought a 2nd one for a spare and I'll buy a 3rd one the first good deal I come across. One with laser. One with light and a third plain.

I have a home range, so I shoot the SR22 day and night (low light/dark laser/light practice).
I probably shoot the SR22 at least 5 days a week (last night :) ).
I have no idea how many Wal Mart Remington and Federal bulk packs have gone through these guns, shot by myself and other shooters. I know it's cutting into my stash of 22 ammo though.

The ladies like this gun. Last week one lady shot the SR22 at my place Saturday morning and drove to Ft Worth to buy one Saturday evening.:)
 
I love mine...closing on 700 rounds now. But you should read the reviews at rimfirecentral.com; they've seen lots of problems with those brittle take-down latchs. Just the day before yesterday, in a thread asking about SR22's with lots of shots, somebody was bragging that he'd had over 5000 rounds and no troubles. Then the very next day he noted that he'd been firing it that evening and the takedown latch shattered and his slide flew out in front. I sure HOPE they got the problem fixed because I keep staring at my latch....
 
I love the gun, but within the past month I've taken two back in under warranty. Both with just over 1000 rounds, the small takedown lever in front of the fingerguard broke. One lost the retention spring, the other just broke enough it wouldn't click into place. Customer found it when the slide came off :eek:

But I still love the gun, comfortable and cheap to shoot

It might be a good idea for me to get a spare or two from Ruger.:)
 
For those who are claiming the MKIII to be a more accurate shooter, no kidding!!! This is just a range toy and a fun plinker. If you think you'll be getting pin point accuracy with it then keep dreaming haha.

For all it's worth, I have shot it a couple of times and will buy one soon. They are pretty accurate for such a short barrel but wouldn't compare it to my MKII. They are different types of guns and this is 10000x better than the P22 and Sig Mosquito, which require high velocity ammo and are brand picky. Sure some people get good results with bulk ammo with different recoil springs etc, but why not just buy a quality .22 handgun like the Ruger??
 
Thanks for the ton of replies! My big concern is buying one, having the take down lever problem and having my gun out of action for a week or so. Just wish there was a every gun after serial number xxxxx is good to go thing.

One reason I'm really into the SR22 is the rail option in front of the trigger guard. Even if the 22/45 needs more maintenance, has a tedious take down, and plenty of lubrication (I've heard they have a very AR 15 like tendency to only run well when wet) it has an amazing track record, however from what I've seen Ruger doesn't offer a Railed version that has iron sights. I have seen a model that has piccatinny rail forward of the trigger guard and a threaded barrel, but no Irons. ]

Anyone know of a 22/45 that has rail options AND Irons?

Yeah the guys that had the takedown button failure had to send the gun back to Ruger vs just getting a part in the mail.

I bought the CT laser after buying the SR22 but I had plans on getting a laser for the SR22 eventually.
I'm big into lasers and laser/lights. I have about a dozen on defense guns and on low light/dark practice guns (I have a backyard home range where I shoot low light/dark about five times a week).

Some years back I installed a rail under the barrel of this 22/45 for use as a laser/light practice gun. Also the gun is a handy flashlight/gun for around the place at night. The Streamlight TLR-2 is a excellent gun mounted laser/light.
