.22lr at its most popular point ever

I know the caliber has long been part of the American Gun Culture to be sure. But I would think it' unprecedented current spike in popularity and sales (look at the explosion of AR22's, the incredible 10/22 accessorize craze, the plethora of 1911-22's etc.) is a result mostly of simple economics. Many people are practicing with their AR22/1911-22 instead of blowing through .223/.45acp. I think Joe Mantegna put it in simple terms during one of this season's Excellent "Gun Stories" TV show when he said "All Gun-Nuts have at least one 10/22 or the like in their collection." :) That being said, I sometimes think the caliber is seemingly 'dismissed' as almost a little novelty-like round when nothing more could be further from the truth (as it's often severely underestimated).

I voted for .22 pistol and then totally forgot about my .22 air rifle. My air rifle is actually louder than my .22 rimfire pistol.

I can never see the purpose of having lots of .22LR weapons. Or any other caliber for that matter. I have 2 handguns that shoot .40 and I consider that too much to the point of maybe selling one. I do plan on getting one of those AR-7 rifles to make a good lightweight camp firearm or maybe one of those new savage dual caliber single rifles. Choices choices.

not only do I own a 22 pistol and rifle but I own a 22 revolver( revolvers are NOT pistols)

...aah, you did not include a choice of "I own several .22LR rifles, at least one .22LR pistol, and at least one .22LR revolver."

Live and learn.

Does that help?

Best, Rich

I own three .22lr rifles and five .22lr handguns.

It is the best round for target practice on the planet.

How can anyone get by without several .22 cal. firearms!? I have three .22 handguns. There are four long guns in .22 rimfire. We go through hundreds of rounds every year. My grandchildren look foreward to our range trips with the single shots. Next trip I may start my grandson on the little semi auto. He will like ten shots between reloads! I think nine years old is about right...he has been shooting for three years now.

I may go through hundreds of rounds...of centerfire...in one weekend.

Yeah, I'm a multiple .22 owner too. I have eight .22 handguns and at least twice that many rifles. (I haven't done a count in a while.) They're fun and cheap to shoot. What's not to like?

Furncliff, that Brno is gorgeous!

I think .22 is a must have caliber. It is great to learn on and is cheap (and fun) to shoot.

My brother and I have a lot of fun competing against each other with our .22 rifles. I think a .22 is a great rifle to learn the fundamentals of shooting. It gives a new shooter a good base to learn without having to deal with recoil, which we all know can cause problems for inexperienced shooters. Not to mention you can do a whole lot more shooting for a lot less expense.

I don't own a .22 handgun and I've never shot one. However, if I ever see one for a good deal, I definitely would not mine having one.

No retail ammo price can begin to equate to 500 rds. for about $23.

A single well-placed round of "novelty" .22LR from 100 yards has been known to terminate people.

Ive got my .22 collection down to just 1 pistol. It used to accompany 2 rifles. Ill replace them again im sure of it.

One rifle (CZ452). One revolver (S&W Model 18). One auto (Beretta 92fs Practice Kit). Still regret selling my single six convertible and may buy another one one day.

Do you recommend them for a first gun as well?

Nope

I do if someone is going to "get into" shooting, but not if the individual just wants a defensive firearm.

In the first case the firearm is their entry into shooting sports. The .22 gives them a firearm that lets the shoots lots for less and that's always good.

In the latter it is a tool to serve a non recreational purpose and has to serve that purpose since another firearm may not be purchased. If they someone in the second group wants another firearm I then recommend a .22. i.e., Most folks have one shovel, but not always a good one or the right type for what they need while the gardener will have several.

Took a minute to calculate the .22's hanging around the house..
Ruger Single Six
Ruger Mark 2
Ruger 10-22
Tarus Revolver
Marlin Mountie
S&W Airlite
Henry Survival pack rifle
Beretta 21a
Browning SA22

I still KICK myself for letting the Marlin 39 get away....
MR

10 S&W .22 handguns
2 Browning Buckmarks
a 10/22
a CO2 BB pistol that looks like my M&P 9
a lever action Daisey Red Ryder
and my favorite is a Remington Model 512 that I paid for with money I earned picking up pecans on halves. I was 10 years old and that was 58 years ago. It's killed many squirrels, rabbits, and quail for the pot.
One day I'm going to buy a Ruger Single Six convertible. I've never owned a .22 magnum. I guess that should be for another poll.
