Cambodian Shooting Range - No Ammo, broken guns, what's not to love?

Hey Guys



Posting this from Thailand right now...

Some gun buddies and I take a side trip to Cambodia to go shoot rocket launchers... Which is ridiculously unsuccessful.

Very cool toys scattered about in various stages of disrepair....

I cannot possibly convey just how much this simultaneously was awesome and sucked.

No Rockets, No grenades, No Ammo for most things, and the interesting things for which they DID have ammo the gun had a broken firing pin... And they couldn't figure out how to scavenge a new pin from one of the derelict guns that were rusting away.

I still can't believe how utterly we failed on this trip to shoot anything interesting.

Cambodia.... I shall return...
 
Yeah.... I realize that....

I wasn't all that familiar with the platform or the history..... I had no idea that I would run into one

The carry handle bolted on to the buffer tube is different than mine. Also looked like there was a wing nut on the right side where the cross-piece bolt locks the barrel in to place (headspacing on those is set via tapered block of metal that is tightened / loosened by a cross-bolt.. I use a torque wrench to adjust on mine... evidently they use a wing nut...)

Interesting toys they had.. poor shape, but .. interesting.

Will FedEx deliver ammo in advance of your next trip? Have it dropped at the hotel you'll be staying at :)
 
I have friends of who went to Cambodia as well and they weren't impressed either. Lots of antique stuff in poor condition and actually dangerous stuff like rusted barrels, bulged barrels and guns which look like they could blow up in your face.

I do not get into the disgusting details of the animals they were offered to shoot at (goats, chickens, cow for the RPG) ... they all declined yet saw other tourists shooting up farm animals for fun. pretty sick if you ask me....
 
My future mother in law wants to retire back to Cambodian, might be worth a trip if they have rockets!
 
You mean I can take a trip there and try out rocket launchers?! That is so rad anyone know the approximate cost to try one out or where a good place would be to go there?
 
Many of those decrepit weapons were likely carried by Khmer Rouge soldiers back in the 1970s during the savage Cambodian Civil War.

same feeling I get about safari hunters.
 
Phenom Phen is THE place to go apparently,

we tried to cut corners by going to the range in Siam Reap, (so we could do Anchor Watt and the shooting range on the same short trip) But as you can see it didn't work out all that well.

Next year I'm doing Phenom Phen,

There is a steep learning curve for running around adventuring in some of these countries.
 
What I've learned so far in this thread...

Round trip flight to Phnom Penh, Cambodia; $4481
Taxi to gun range (ask for "Happy Club"); $4
Jeep ride to mountains; 60km
RPG-7 Rental (per shot); $300 ea
Live cows as targets; $100 ea

Hamburger: Not priceless.
 
Just think I was in the area and did it free opps I got paid for it LOL

AND got free food!!
 
One of my best friends was over there about 4 years ago on a round world trip, he lived in Cambodia for 6 months. He paid from what i can remember, 300 USD , in town and then was driven out about 2 hours by some shady guys. He got to shoot a full auto AK , throw a couple hand grenades in a pond, and fire and RPG. has it all on video. The rpg was just freaking awesome! fired it off into the side of a mountain. was totally rad!

It looks like it started out life as an M16A1 and an AK74


Someone fitted the AK74 barrel in 5.45 to an M16 barrel extension (I think) and then used the original barrel nut to hold it in place on the receiver....

The gas system wouldn't work (for obvious reasons) so they used (I think) a cienner full auto or possibly an air force .22LR drop in conversion which they ground to fit the 5.45 chamber..

Not sure why they ground the forward assist.... maybe it was corroded or jammed.

The pistol grip looks like something someone fabricated themselves out of wood (cambodians are known to be pretty good with wood, there is a lot of it there)

And the stock looks like it was either off of an AK74, or possibly home made to look like one, and then press fit (I think) into the receiver? or a stub from the old buffer tube....? could also have been attached via a custom bracket...

All in all, a really zany concept gun...

I may have to try to throw one togeather when I get home to the USA..... its just too nutty an idea to not poke it with a stick a

It might be an M4 upper receiver...

the more I look at it, it looks like it was salvaged from a rifle that had a KB
