A kids first successful solo hunt

My son has been hunting with me a long time...he started going when he was 3. He recently got a new rifle for his 13th birthday and this weekend, after a lot of tough weekends, he had his first successful solo hunt. He's only hunted on his own two or three times. He's earned that right by hunting safely with me for the past several years. I just wanted to share. That's the short story. The full story is below if you are interested in such things.

Congratulations to the both of you....and especially that fine young man your raising up right.

I can say from experience it makes you pretty proud when you get to that stage in their life. I have one daughter and three up and coming grandsons the oldest is now 11 and has been hunting most of his life. He got his second or nice buck, and third so far, while out with his mom this past Friday evening, posted up somewhere below.

I'm still not ready to turn him loose just yet, but it isn't due to his abilities or safety. I just want to keep him in check a few more years, he still has a little maturing to do.
 
Great story, congratulations to you and your son. I've recently started taking my 5 year old in the woods with me, and I hope we will hunt together for years to come.
 
If he's going with you at 5 yrs old then I'm sure he'll be hooked. Good on you for taking him!
 
With 3 grandsons it sounds like you'll have all the hunting partners you could ask for!

Thanks for the kind words...and you are right...I can't call him a boy any longer. Like I tell my wife all the time...we're not raising a boy...we are raising a man. He sure is coming of age quickly.

My son is 12 and its the same here. Now its not about teaching whats right and wrong, its about teaching why so that he can make the right decisions. You are on the right track.
 
What? You're teaching your son to kill poor defensless animals? Oh, the horror.

Well, that's my daily dose of sarcasm.

Looks to me like your son did alright. Nice looking deer and he's apparently a responsible enough young man to be trusted on his own in the woods with a rifle. That means you did alright, too.

With any luck, well all be old crusty farts on here twenty years from now reading his posts about teaching his own kids to shoot and hunt.

Good for him, nice looking deer. Good for you, raising a young man with a level head.
