Can't add much to that other than, as a heli mechanic, I'd be interested in knowing what final determination on cause is found. Airframe looks reasonably intact, so that should be fairly straight-forward task.

By the way, what model bird was it?

Oh, and I have always believed that a helicopter is just an optical illusion with sound effects..

A helicopter pilot buddy of mine in the Air Force once told me that a helo doesn't fly, it just beats the air into submission.

Thank God you're all OK. As a Paramedic, I keep up on medevac crashes and note that most have no survivors. You're in a pretty exclusive club now.

I suppose this will fuel the fire of conspiracy theories of pro-gun notables dying (2 out of 3 now, Noveske, FPSRussia guy) in mysterious accidents. Somebody please post the NTSB report when it comes out.

I'll take it. Most fixed wing crashes (small craft, anyway) are survivable. Just as helicopters are able to auto-rotate with proper piloting, airplanes tend to be pretty decent gliders. So long as the pilot remembers Rule #1 (fly the airplane), you'll probably get out of it ok, barring a complete airborne disassembly or sudden contact with an immovable object (like a mountain).

If they had any reel skilz, they'd be targeting some of those rogue pythons endangering all the wildlife in the area ;-)

PS: Alas, auto rotation doesn't work terribly well when the aircraft loses power over a forested area, and the rotors hit the treetops. Nose-down landings are not fun.
