Grip color on a stainless wheelgun! What do you like?

What color grips would you put on a stainless revolver?

I'm pondering some a nice wooden Hogue square-butt grip for my 5" 686+.

Just curious what the prevailing opinion is on aesthetics.

I don't know that I hold any particular scheme in mind when admiring grips. I do tend to be a little more fond of nicely figured woods, regardless of hue.

I've tried other grips on my 686 over the years, and I always find my way back to the original Goncalo Alves grips that came with it. To me, they just look and feel right.

This gentleman doesn't prefer blondes but he does like ivory, stag, bone, maple, holly or micarta on his stainless/nickel/hard chrome sixguns.

Other: Camo!!

I've always loved the Pachmayr Presentation grips, and was always drawn to the slightly tacky yet undeniably cool looking camo versions. I bought some on ebay a few weeks ago, and they look and feel perfect on my S&W Model 64-6 DAO!!! :D

Generally I like dark colors with stainless or nickel, but ivory or stag can also look really good, especially with high polish.

I think as dark as you can get for SS. I made a pair for my M66 out of Iron Wood, really awesome wood, very dense, and almost black. Also very difficult to work with, that wood is some hard dense stuff.

My first love was a blonde. I married a redhead, but I also like brunettes with blonde highlights .

I like both red and brown...

Top pic shows Altamont grips on a S&W 629-5 Mountain Gun and a S&W 640-1 Pro Series.

Bottom pic is a S&W 60 "no dash" square-butt also with Altamont grips and a Tyler T-grip. Knife is a Benchmade Saddle Mountain Skinner.

I think ivory looks great with both stainless steel and a blued finish.

Since I shoot my handguns and not just look at them, I prefer grips that feel good in my hand and help in shooting. Color to me is a moot point. That's not saying that grips need to be ugly to be functional, but looks are not my first priority. I realize that many folks try to individualize/personalize their handguns with grips, similar to bikers and their chrome and other accessories. Just human nature. While goodlookin' redheaded women still turn my head, I married a brunette. Again, color was not the priority.

Why would you assume the rest of us are any different? You think that because a person likes aesthetically pleasing grips that they're not concerned with function? You think I just bought grips because they were "pretty"? Do you know how much I had to pay John Culina to make those ivory micarta grips, on the 629 above, to just the right specs? I was so elated to find a maker that would produce grips of the perfect shape out of ivory micarta that I had three sets made for various frame sizes. You probably don't realize this but it's actually quite insulting to imply that a person is only concerned with looks, when they may have spent untold thousands of dollars in search of grips that work best, with function as the primary objective. Grips that fit both the gun and shooter and allow for better shooting. I've tried those rubbers you love, Hogue, Pachmayr and Uncle Mike's. I've also tried at least a dozen pairs of Hogue wood grips. I have tried grips from Altamont, Ajax, Eagle, Herrett's, Tedd Adamovich, Nutmeg Sports, BarS, Ahrends, Lett's, CLC, Tom Sargis, Sack Peterson, John Culina and various other makers to find what works. I have $450 invested in two pairs of custom grips that I will never use again. In essence, I've gone to a lot more effort and expense to find the right grips that work than you ever have or likely ever will. So please, enjoy your $20 rubbers but don't insult those of us who want a little more.

Get over yourself Craig. Reread my post. I never said grips could not be attractive and functional, I actually said just the opposite, i.e.,
That's not saying that grips need to be ugly to be functional, but looks are not my first priority.
Notice I said not MY first priority. Never said anything negative about folk's with other priorities. I said folks like to personalize their handguns, just human nature. Sorry if you took that as an insult. Maybe you are a tad sensitive or just grouchy again today. Seems to me, the question asked was "What do you like?" not "what does only CraigC like?

So you've spent thousands of dollars in vain in attempt to find the perfect combination of beauty and function. You've hundreds of dollars of grips you'll never use. That's too bad. So you've spent more time and money on your searches for grips than I ever will, so what? Are you braggin' or just complainin'? If that's what you like to spend your time and money on, good for you. Some folksspend their whole life looking for a good woman and some find one on their first date. Does that make the guy that goes home at night to an empty house somehow superior because he's still lookin'? I'm happy with my grips and you appear to still be searching. You go on a rant listing every grip maker in the book trying to imply I insulted you, while all the time insulting me and belittling my taste in grips. So we're different, get over it. Do I think some folks prefer looks over function when it comes to handgun grips? You dam right I do. Truth is, there is a multitude of folks that only care about how their handguns look. Probably the reasoning behind the never-ending "which grips make my gun look the best" type threads. Amazes me the amount of folks that have one set of grips on their handguns for looks and then put those $20 Rubbers you like to dis, back on for shooting. But still, it has nuttin' to do with lookin' at the gun......

Once again, the question asked was not what kind, how much they cost, how they absorb recoil, but what color? Color has no function on handgun grips other than who's eyes it catches. Kinda the idea behind the pink grips for ladies or the red/green/pink tips on bullets. No function other than to catch one's eye. You like good looking guns, we all know that and you have many fine specimens. As ou said, you spend a lot of time and money making them look just so. Probably why you are sensitive to folks that don't put as much of a priority on it as you do. But it is not an insult, just a fact of life that we are not all just like you, in other words, I'm not assuming other folks are different than me, I know they are. It don't make me get my panties in a wad.

Oh please, if "color is a moot point", there was no reason for you to even post in this thread. You did so to be contrary and condescending and for no other reason. There's somebody like that in every grip thread. Don't be coy, if you're going to make snide comments at least own up to it. Interesting and typical passive-aggressive behavior.

As ou said, you spend a lot of time and money making them look just so.
Did you actually read what I wrote? I've spent a lot of time and money looking for grips that WORK. For you to assume that it was done only for looks. Yes, I have a lot invested and I take it seriously.

So you've spent thousands of dollars in vain in attempt to find the perfect combination of beauty and function.
No, beauty is easy. Function, not so easy. Not in vain at all. For the results are worth the journey.

Are you braggin' or just complainin'?
Making a point, one that you clearly missed. I probably have to accept that you really don't have a clue what I'm talking about.

edmo01- I recognized those grips as being from Altamont.

They make great grips at a reasonable price.

I think next payday I'm gonna get the snakeskin rubber & wood for my Blue 3' GP100.
