I don't understand the love for the old style GP100 grips

You know, the ones with the wooden inserts. Other than aesthetics, I find the Hogue Monogrips to be far superior on the GP100. The Hogues just plain feel better to me and I have a better grip on the gun with the Hogues. That being said, I also shoot better with the Hogues. I don't think my hands are especially large. My hand measures 7" from the tip of my index finger to the base of my palm. I can't palm a basketball, so I don't think my hands are big.

I know that grips are a very personal thing, but is it just aesthetics or do some people feel that the old style grips fit better.

I would love to have hogue grips on my GP100, However, issue holster and speed loaders do not work with them and company policy states we will only use said holster and speed loaders....... I have Hogues on most fo my other handguns...

A grip must first feel like a "fit" then let me "adjust" to feel the "fit" , work cold ,wet , sweaty, & even bloody . Stiky grips are a NO !

I even like the plowhandles on my Redhawk , my hands can`t stand much full power shootin , but if shot there on there!

Absorbtion of recoil is nice but not a must, I have very nice panels to "dress" my GP in but I don`t.

I`ve tried alot of grips but always go back to the LETT panel grips!

Hey , nerd-with-a-gun where ya at in north kakalaki !!!

Well, I think you answered your own question. Grips are a personal thing, which is especially true of the rubber Hogues with finger grooves. That same grip style is what came from the factory on my 686, and I immediately replaced them for the simple reason that the finger grooves were in the wrong place for my hands and gripping technique. Generally, I prefer my grips to be made of wood without finger grooves, but YMMV.

Grips are very personal, as is recoil. While I do not care for rubber grips in the least, the original style GP grips are far more comfortable for me than any Hogue ever was.

Grips may be the most personal part of a revolver

When shooting, the only thing you touch are the grips & trigger, so it all depends on your hand and tastes.

My hands are the same size as yours, so I'll take some comfort in your comments about Hogue grips. After 20 years with little shooting, and that all with semi-autos and a 22/32 kit gun, I've ordered a Ruger Alaskan in 44 Mag.

Around 1980, I sold a S&W M28 because the standard grips were fine for single action, but just too much trigger reach to shoot properly DA. Sweet gun, but I pulled every shot to the right shooting DA. I also dislike finger grooves unless they happen to be where my fingers want to be - which isn't often.

I'll be interested in how the stock grips fit my hand with the Alaskan. If the old style grips are smaller - or just because they lack finger grooves - I'll probably end up ordering the old style grips from Ruger. For me, smaller tends to be better - my M28 was replaced with a Dan Wesson and small grips.

If anyone has any feedback on Badger or Excalibur grips on a GP100, and how they feel vs the Hogue or 'old' grips, I'd appreciate the comments.

I didn't know I was supposed to love my old GP100 grips. I do find them retro-cool now that Ruger offers something different.

I never changed mine for the simple fact they worked well and didn't look too bad in the '90s. Now I just expect my GP100 to look that way.

They fit my hand perfectly. The only revolver grip I didn't have to change. Falls under Rule Number One. If it works, don't fix it. Mind you, I recall seeing something about the maker going out of business.
"...7" from the tip of my index finger to the base of my palm..." Longer than mine. How the grips feels and works for you is the important part. Nothing else matters.
"...S&W M28..." 'N' frame. Big SOB. 'K' frames are too big for my hand. Except for a 2" M19.

I was disappointed when they changed from the wood panel insert. If I were to buy a new GP-100 the first thing I would do would be to search for a set of the old ones.

The old grip was the best factory grip ever, in my opinion. First time I shot a .357 it was back to back with a six inch 586 with the terrible Goncalo Alves grips and a 4-inch GP 100. It took me a long time to warm back up to Smiths after that.

I do prefer the Hogue on the SP101.

Looks are very important to me, as is functionality. There may be another set out there that feels better to me than the originals but the originals fit very well and look good. They fir most people well, maybe not perfect but they work well for most people. They are the Rem. 1100/870 of the grip world, they fit most people well. plus they look better than solid rubber.

I guess I am in the minority. I have never liked the look of the wood insert grips and I don't like the way they feel in my hand. But as it has been said it is personal. In my opinion, grips should be either wood or rubber, not a combination of both. Oh yeah, let's not leave out stag, "ivory" and Corian. Those are good grip materials also. Just the way I feel.

Next time make a poll :)

Old grips for me. Fit my hand perfectly, no finger grooves. I can shoot any load in a GP100 with the old grips.

I personally dislike grips that have finger grooves, especially rubber grips.

Ruger shoulda never changed, and they ought to change back to the originals, both the standard-size and the smaller grips on the GP100 3" model.

JMNSHO.

Any time I've shot the Hogues I thought they were long, but narrow. I think the old Ruger grips are a bit wider. It feels more natural to me. They're on my GP100. I always thought they looked a little weird, but I've had the gun long enough now they just look right. That's for me though, I know a lot of people switched to Hogues right away after buying a GP100 with the old grips.

The old grip is proportional to the gun, so I find it more attractive.
It's also not as bulky as the Hogue, and lets your fingers find their own groove. I've not actually shot a GP100 with one, but when Ruger switched grips I bought one of the old grips for when I eventually do get one.

I find that the Hogue passes "the sip test", but when shooting lots of rounds at speed on a K-frame it just fits me wrong. My fingers are not fat enough to need all that groove space, so the grip keeps my hand from being able to choke up properly and my fingers too far apart. They're also ugly as sin.

For what it's worth, the GP100 Hogue feels better in the hand to me than the K-frame version, though the variation is probably minute.

I LOVE the old style grips. They fit my hand perfectly. My favorite double action grip of all time.

The new Hogues, for my hands suck. The finger grooves are in the way. I want my fingers where I want them, not where some pre-made template says where they need to be.

To me it is no comparison. The original Ruger GP 100 grips were a perfect fit. The new Hogues fit me about as well as a brick.

I think the full size Ruger rubber grips with the wood inserts, look great on my blue, half lug barrel 4" GP100, shown below!:

I do not like either grip. I have rosewood "Keith" style fingergroove grips on my GP's. The first is smooth and the other two are checkered on the sides and in the center on the grooves. I find recoil more stout with the wood grips with FH .357 loads, but control is better. One of these days I will get around to posting pictures....

Bought one with the Lett grips, switched to the Hogues, switched back. Lett feels better in my hand and I group better with it. Fit is everything.

>>I don't understand the love for the old style GP100 grips<<

Just as I don't understand the love of those butt ugly rubber jobbies? :p

i prefer the hogue to the old style grips. my gp100 old style grips sit in the box, unloved.

The original-style GP100 grip is absolutely perfect for my hands. I have thought of ordering custom stocks/grips from Herrett's or such, for an S&W K/L frame, and instead of sending a tracing of my hand, asking them to duplicate the original GP100 grip dimensions. Yes, they fit me that well. The perfect shape, IMHO, for mitigating magnum recoil.

OTOH, my fingers abhor Hogue revolver grips, whether wood or rubber. The finger grooves are sized and spaced wrong for my hands, and the palm swell is too low. My newest GP100, which came from the factory with Hogues, will soon be wearing an old-style grip.
