Advice and Indulgence about possible AR

OK, so I actually ordered a complete lower from Aero. I looked at the stripped, but they were running a cyber Monday sale and it seemed like the thing to do. to get a complete rather than stripped lower. For $175, I can always sell it and recoup my investment. What else do I need to assemble a functional rifle? If I buy a complete upper from Aero am I ready to go aside from mags, or is there something else I need to get?
It depends on what comes with the "complete upper."

Like anything else, sometimes sellers will throw in some goodies. BUT, let's assume they don't. Also, some "uppers" come with a front sight, and others don't.

You'll need:

Bolt Carrier Group "BCG"
Buffer (often times part of a complete lower)
Buffer Spring (often times part of a complete lower)
Charging Handle
Front Sight
Rear Sight
Sling
Handguards (Sometimes called a "rail", depending on the type - Often times part of a complete upper)

Out of idle curiosity, is there a Standard length AR in .223 for a price similar to the S&W Sport's price of about $600?
Literally, there are gobs of them.

Palmetto State Armory sells kits and complete lowers for less than that. Sans shipping, it's probably possible to put a PSA AR 15 together for less than $400.

especially if a D wins the gubernatorial next November
Gubernatorial elections only apply to an individual state...and the OP appears to be from TX.

I have to wonder at some of the posts I read here, esp considering this comes from a member with 12,000+ posts...

Bottom line...buy what you want, but take internet advice with a block of Rock Salt.

Thanks, WTP. Looking at Aero's site, their complete uppers need the BCG, a charging handle, and some kind of sight or optic to be complete.

Do you mean like this one recently in the 2nd district?

This is a no brainer. In 2017 things are going to change. AR's will cost plenty in 2016-2017. Don't miss an opportunity to get a good price on one now.

Yes yes, just like everything changed in 2009 after the new president was inaugurated...and just like everything changed in 2013 when the returning president didn't have an election to worry about any more AND had a huge emotional media saturated event with which to push his agenda.

Why do certain people keep acting as though these horrible laws are going to happen?

Stop acting as though any of this nonsense is going anywhere!

A complete lower + a complete upper = a complete rifle in about 5 seconds of pushing two pins together.

Some complete rifles or complete uppers don't actually have a sight or optic, but other than that, complete is complete from any company worth buying anything from.

So since you already have a complete order lowered...a complete upper...some magazines...some ammo...make sure you have a sight or optic....that's all you need. I would recommend having a sling and a light for the AR as well if it may be used defensively but anything beyond the complete lower and upper, mags, and ammo, comes down to preferences and intended use.

OK, I an a huge AR fanboy, but I gotta say, I think a guns value comes from what you do with it. I love the way AR's shoot so I have a few. I shoot them a lot.

If you think you will get more use out of a 686 than I think you should get one. Buying an AR just because it might get banned doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Buy what you want, then shoot the heck out of it.

get the ar you REALLY want. Buy once, cry once. You only live once.

For me, that meant I had to build my own, and I had to have the Geissele Hi-Speed Nat'l Match trigger and a 20" bull barrel for my first build. Ended up very happy with it as a target gun.

My second was for defense and took a lightweight approach.

The next round of panic buying may already be here. Congratulations to everyone who bought early.

No idea about that but coincidently put together my first AR recently with a lower I've had for years. My other semiautos use ammo that comes in green crates with funny writing on 'em. ;)

No idea if warranted or not but I'm kinda glad I finished it when I did.

I'm not seeing a panic, or a reason to panic.
I think it is mostly holiday buying, with some taking advantage of low prices and of course some but not a lot are panicking. The panic buyers are not even close the numbers in the last big panic. This seems to be the consensus of many at least. I hope they are right. I have my eye on a couple of AR's that I have been lusting for but will need to wait a couple of months before I can justify turning loose of the $.

While I agree we probably won't see a wide-spread panic buying spree, I'm not taking any chances with the election year coming up. I'm fully stocked on primers, powder and components.

Cabela's is having a primer sale right now, so I loaded up. I'm not going to wait 3 month's and find out they are $60/brick.

Buy the 686. Then buy a $60 stripped lower. This is the registered part. You can always build it up later or not. At least you have it.
