Feds gathering license plate data from gun show attendees

George Orwell was well ahead of his time. Under the gun despising Obama Administration, all things are in the realm of possibility. Things unthinkable a few short decades ago.

I have a CC permit for 30 years. Had an 01 FFL for 13 years. I have bought 4 AR lowers in the last 12 months. Last time I sat at the dealer table while 20 others got approved, before I got approved. I attend 6-10 shows a year. Pretty sure I'm already on the "list." As long as the .gov doesn't have a "shoot him first" list, I'd need to rent a ship to give one. Joe

You really think any LEO dept. has the budget or time to do that?
Federal agents don't get to persuade ranker police officers to do anything either. No authority to have a beat cop do anything without going through channels assorted.

Probably correct, even though the feds are controlling a lot of purse strings these days.

However, I do know a few local LEOs who would love to do this sort of thing, and their supervisors would have zero issues with them doing it on 'company' time.

.

All they need to do is drive the parking lot and then download the data to whoever wants it.
The PD in many cities have the technology to do this and it was probably given to them by a federal agency.
Can you say quid pro quo?

Under the same logic, why not have a run at scanning the plates at the local gun stores, state/s records for hunting licenses, etc.

Would anyone doubt if the government asked credit card companies to report on line ammunition purchases....they wouldn't?

We can joke and dismiss it, but they are building a "List"

BONUS: If you are on here, you're likely already on it.

Gee, nice link. I have to subscribe or sign in to read the whole story. No thanks.

Same for me--"Sign in or Subscribe".
Only shows the first four lines or so.

And no, I don't have a phone. This is on my desktop pc.

Old news, this has been happening for a long time, it's just that technology makes it easier now. Like anything else it can be used for good or bad. Knowing that people on a terrorist watch list are attending gun shows is good info to know IMO.

This may be 2010 emails just now being released on a program in effect then that may or may not be in effect now.

Federal agents have persuaded police officers to scan license plates to gather information about gun-show customers, government emails show, raising questions about how officials monitor constitutionally protected activity.

Emails reviewed by The Wall Street Journal show agents with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency crafted a plan in 2010 to use license-plate readers—devices that record the plate numbers of all passing...

Yep, you do need to be subscriber for the full story.

Wall Street Journal interviewed attorney Jay Stanley of the American Civil Liberties Union who said the program was troubling.

Chris White, "Emails Show Federal Agents Used License Plate Scanners to Collect Information at Gun Shows", Law Newz, 3 Oct 2016.

... According to the report, agents justified the operation by saying they compared data collected at the gun shows with information obtained from license plate scanners at border crossings in the hopes of finding gun smugglers. However, the report found no evidence that “the gun-show surveillance led to any arrests or investigative leads.” Yet, the newspaper says there are indications that the gun show surveillance may have been used at other gun shows throughout the state, and possibly the country — despite the apparent lack of arrests. ...

Surveillance of gun show attendees then or now is stuck on 40% stupid. Check the percentage of criminals who obtain guns from gunshows according to Bureau of Justice Statistics survey of Firearms Using Offenders (inmates who carried or used a firearm in the offense for which they were imprisoned)

To Obama and his toadies, Democrats and liberals in general, and even RINOs, ANYONE who attends a gun show should be on a terrorist watch list.

Big Brother and Big Nanny are watching you!

No problemo... just go with some friends, park a few blocks off or let someone drop you off a block away.

Silly Nazi spying evokes transparent evasions.

jmr 40: "Knowing that people on a terrorist watch list are attending gun shows is good info to know IMO."

The ICE program (a) scanned license tags at legal gun shows, then correlated those tag numbers to (b) tags scanned at legal border crossings to Mexico.

You could attend a gun show in a vehicle and be an American tourist visiting Mexico in that vehicle and the name on the tag registration get profiled as a suspected gun runner. ACLU found that program troubling.

Not surprised. But they don't need officers to do it. 3 drives through the parking lot each day with a cellphone on video will give you almost every tag number. My question... Who cares? Are you going to stop going to shows? We laugh at conspiracy theorists that told us big brother was watching. Then we found out it was true. They've been doing it for a LONG time. Just like there's no "list" of gun owners when we buy a gun..... Riiiiggghhht. It's just a conspiracy and we need to put on our tin hats. Then one day we'll find out it was true. In case we haven't learned from this year alone, the law doesn't apply to everyone or entity.

I'm not sure I doubt they would do this, but I don't know what they'd gain in useful info.
They scan the tags with a plate reader, then scan tags of cars entering Mexico.
When they get a match, it will flag the vehicle for further observation.

I imagine if they see it more than once they would be subjected to searches to see if they are smuggling guns.

All this information is being gathered 24/7 as we move about with our daily lives. The troubling thing is who and what is being done with the big cesspool of this data.
The same info gathered today to catch a terrorist may in ten years be used to disarm the country. It's a matter of trusting the ones with the data.
