That's the hard part in certain instances, many diverting temptations that can become available in a short time span when wanting instant fulfillment. Shop sales guy, "Don't have any 8" models BUT this 6" came in!" Wait-buy...
My favorite .38 spl is my S&W model 67, essentially a stainless model 15. It was a used police revolve with tapered barrel, has a great trigger and is an excellent target and self defense K frame. S&W still makes the 67 with the heavy non tapered barrel if you want a new one. Used ones can be found easily.
True. About 15 years ago, I saw and bought a model 14 for $275 (?? may have been less). The revolver was owned and shot by a BE shooter and he drilled and tapped the frame for a red dot sight. Collectors were not interested but it was exactly what I wanted and as a plus the scope base was with it. The revolver shoots great and we still have it.
I love my 6" 686 but it gets a bit heavy for precise target shooting. Unless you need a mag load, at which I'd recommend a 4" at most, I say stick with a new 67. The triggers on the MIM/hole guns are really nice.
