OK, I just added a second Springfield XDs to my "Go To Guns Collection." Back in October, I picked up a Springfield XDs 9mm, with the 3.3 inch barrel. I quickly fell in love with this gun. The size, weight, accuracy, fiber optic front sight ... make this little gun one of my all time favorites.

I was kind of torn when I bought it between the 9mm and the 45 versions. Both guns are totally identical in every way except caliber, round count and weight. The 9mm has 2 additional rounds with the flush mount mags (7+1). The 45 version has 5+1 with the flush mount mags. And, the 45 is slightly less weight due to not as much metal in the barrel.

The little 9mm has functioned flawlessly with everything I've fed it. I kept reading and looking at the 45, lots of reviews on YouTube. The biggest complaint I kept seeing and it was not a significant issue, was a lot of folks were saying the 45 was a handful as far as recoil. Most reviews gave the 4.0 slide/barrel configuration high marks as far as taming that.

I came across a XDs 45 in the 4.0 barrel length on one of the auction sites about a week ago with a buy it now price of $400 brand new. Springfield is still offering the Gear Up Program through the end of this month (3 extra mags and a range bag) when you buy a new XD line pistol. I went ahead a got it. Picked it up this morning from my FFL holder and went straight to the range. Shot about a half box of 230 grain ball and some Black Talons I had put back. Like its little brother this gun was flawless in its initial trip out. Didn't have a lot of time, all rounds were fired a 10 yards and it was printing 2-3 inch groups standing. The recoil was not that bad, follow up shots and target acquisition were quick due to the orange fiber optic front sight. Overall, I was very happy with this short session.

Kudos to Springfield on this offering.

I found the felt recoil very personal, especially in this format. XD-S has a very long (front to back), but slim handle. So, for me something like Kahr CW45 offers an easier recoil. But many people do not mind. It's all about the shape of one's hand.

I had very positive experiences with XD's double-stack .45s, so I wanted to love XD-S too, but in the end I had to settle onto Shield 45 for a small .45.

A 4.0 version of XD-S sounds quite nice as a collection stuffing though.

My primary carry gun for a while was the XDS in .40 S&W. Extremely accurate little pistol and has never hiccuped once.

I did add a Pachmyr grip sleeve, though. The recoil was a little harsh with self-defense loads...

Carrying one for years. Good gun.

Company threw us under the bus though. So eewwww. But I been drinkin so whatever.

My XDs 3.3 is mostly a car gun. I can slip the XDs and the holster in my belt pretty easily if I feel the need for more fire power than my pocket pistols. To me the XDs 3.3 in 45 isn't much of a fun shooter... mainly because of the this grip as mentioned previously. A grip sleeve does make it easier on my hand. When I practice I usually use the extended magazine which gives more of a grip and makes it easier to shoot several hundred rounds before wanting to move onto something else.

I went with the Kahr CM9 and Diamondback DB9 for 9mm carry pistols. I like the much smaller form factors so I carry them more than my XDs. I recently bought a XD mod2 4" in 45acp. I really like the wider grip and extra rounds... but it isn't as concealable.

The wife has 2 XD Mod2 4.0, one in 9mm and one in 45acp. She picked them out all by herself and she can sure shoot'um.

I think my 9mm will remain my favorite for CC. Depends on what holsters I can find for my 4.0. I'm not a fan of the slide hanging out the bottom of the holster. I'm looking at a Paladin MKII M.P.H. IWB/OWB Kydex by 4 Corners Concealment. Hope to get it ordered the next day or two. Got some options on this one as far as IWB or OWB,

Paladin MK II M.P.H. IWB/OWB KYDEX® holster

Neither her nor I carry but the 9mm she bought did come with the factory holster and mag holster. One of these days I might have to try it on just for grins and giggles.

I was pretty stoked for the new 10mm XDm, but honestly the more I think about it, the less I want to support a company that was willing to allow their customers rights to be infringed in order to keep making their product.

But this philosophical question isn't the theme of your thread. So I'm just going to leave it at that.

I wish people would stop going out of their way to try and put a gun company out of business... Especially when they've recently have been going out of their way to support 2A rights...

They have no power or pull in that state. It's ran by antigunners. They were publicly against a gun bill, and once it looked like the Democrat controlled legislation was going to be able to pass the bill, SA lobbied to be excluded. They NEVER supported the bill. They went from being opposed to being neutral on the bill. After the outrage, they went back to being against the bill from being neutral, apologized, and have sense donated as well had have done what they could to help support our rights... We gain nothing by putting them out of business and their employees out of a job.. On the other hand, it'll be a big win for the state on IL, who put them between a rock and a hard place to begin with, and anti-gunners...

Sure, I get that. Valid points.

I've rented one of these on the range before, you're right the XDs 45 is a sweet shooting gun. I've always been happy with my XDm 9mm. Springfield really got it right with this XD line of pistols.

That is the single stack 45 I kept. The 4.0 is a great gun. The perfect combination. Short grip and a long barrel
Easier to conceal. If you put in a 6 round mag with the extension it is about a Commander Size grip

Understand the personal preference. The original grip is one of the things that sold me on the XDs.

I think the xds 4.0 looks a little awkward with the flush fit magazine but the idea struck me that a single stack xds 4.0 in .45 with a full length mag may work well as a striker fired 1911 replacement of sorts. They don't seem very popular and I'm reading now that they are discontinued. Oh well. Love my 3.3 9mm.

Haven't heard they were discontinuing the 4 0. Makes me glad I was looking at the auction sites. I love the 3.3 in my 9 mm. But the longer sight radius and extra weight were positives for me on the .45, 4.0. I picked up one of the Concealment Express IWB kydex holsters. The extra length is no harder to conceal than the shorter slide. I really like the Concealment Express holster. It has the option of replacing the standard 1.5 belt clip with a 1.75. I like the wider belt. Also the cant is adjustable from 0 to 15 degrees. The 0 cant works great for a strong side behind the hip carry.
