OK, I just added a second Springfield XDs to my "Go To Guns Collection." Back in October, I picked up a Springfield XDs 9mm, with the 3.3 inch barrel. I quickly fell in love with this gun. The size, weight, accuracy, fiber optic front sight ... make this little gun one of my all time favorites.
I was kind of torn when I bought it between the 9mm and the 45 versions. Both guns are totally identical in every way except caliber, round count and weight. The 9mm has 2 additional rounds with the flush mount mags (7+1). The 45 version has 5+1 with the flush mount mags. And, the 45 is slightly less weight due to not as much metal in the barrel.
The little 9mm has functioned flawlessly with everything I've fed it. I kept reading and looking at the 45, lots of reviews on YouTube. The biggest complaint I kept seeing and it was not a significant issue, was a lot of folks were saying the 45 was a handful as far as recoil. Most reviews gave the 4.0 slide/barrel configuration high marks as far as taming that.
I came across a XDs 45 in the 4.0 barrel length on one of the auction sites about a week ago with a buy it now price of $400 brand new. Springfield is still offering the Gear Up Program through the end of this month (3 extra mags and a range bag) when you buy a new XD line pistol. I went ahead a got it. Picked it up this morning from my FFL holder and went straight to the range. Shot about a half box of 230 grain ball and some Black Talons I had put back. Like its little brother this gun was flawless in its initial trip out. Didn't have a lot of time, all rounds were fired a 10 yards and it was printing 2-3 inch groups standing. The recoil was not that bad, follow up shots and target acquisition were quick due to the orange fiber optic front sight. Overall, I was very happy with this short session.
Kudos to Springfield on this offering.
