Hello all, I have been contemplating my next toy, and I am thinking a 22lr ar upper. I really can't decide between a conversion kit and a dedicated 22lr upper, but I want to build it short for my sbr and probably a pistol lower too. So, the question is: What would the drawbacks be to a 22lr conversion kit in a 6-10" barrel vs. a dedicated 4-8" 22lr upper?

As well as the correct, slower twist. This should give better accuracy.
And not having a gas port to foul, or blow debris into the action with the first centerfire shot.

I have wanted to try a conversion kit in a seven twist AR, with the Aguila SuperSubSonics. I think the heavy slow bullets would like a fast twist, and a threaded barrel...
But then it comes back to bore diameter. Some report terrible accuracy still. I imagine the bore is just not tight enough and the bullets skid...
I think I may still need to see this for myself. ;)

I am very interested in this conversation...

The twist issue is mainly why I'm asking the question. I have heard from a lot of people over the years that the conversion kits are "fine" and that they "suck". Makes it kinda tough to figure out with that precise of language explaining it.
I can build either setup for about the same cost too, so accuracy or function have to be the deciding factors. I will most likely be running a can on this someday too, if that affects info offered. Mostly just want to plink with my sbr for less $$

I have used both. The conversion was precise enough until it wasn't. When the chamber portion of the conversion kit leads up, groups go from inches to feet. The leading can be removed, but doesn't take many rounds before it leads up again.

We've put over a thousand rounds through a PSA 10 inch dedicated upper without it leading up, about half suppressed. Precision is about average and it remains consistent.

I had a 22lr conversion bolt. It worked fine and was just OK for range blasting. I have since sold it. The AR has the wrong twist for a 40 or 36 grain bullet, A dedicated upper would probably be better, I would rather shoot my "tuned" up Ruger 10/22 But there again I shoot more pistol(s) than rifles

I am so happy with my AR pistol build. Mine is 5.56 with a .22lr conversion kit.
I have read all the negative comments and reviews on conversion kits and accuracy in 5.56 barrels. For all practical purposes mine is very accurate. It will shoot the black right out of a target.
Here are three testimonials:

The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the occasional jam with cheap plinking ammo.
This has become my go-to .22. I rarely shoot my other rifles.

While we're on the topic,.....so,...what is the better brands of dedicated 22lr uppers?

And Primary Arms has the conversion for a hundred and a half, with three magazines. I have seen them slightly cheaper but not by much.

Palmetto is always out of stock in the upper I would purchase.

I’m pretty happy with my CMMG. For a production barrel it’s pretty accurate. Its very reliable as long as I use ammo it likes. It shoots CCI SV very accurately, but on hot days (Florida) it gets gummed up with the waxy coating and chokes. It runs a better with Aguila plated but not quite as accurately.

Note:
Lite hammer springs or hammers with a profile that it doesn’t like will cause light strike misfires.
Just another reason to get a better trigger.
