Talked to my dad, he said just run 3006 in to a 35 whelen die, then the 30 Gibbs die. the Gibbs die from gordon would save money the ai would have to be set back to be a true ai

If we went with the gibbs was my plan..... tho now I'm tempted to try just ramming a heavy bullet I to the lands in a greased case to see if I can't be extra lazy.

having the barrel faced would be an extra cost, but those 06 Savage barrels don't generally sell for anything, and are nearly as hard to give away lol.....I would need an second set reamer and gauges tho....and dies..... hrrmmmm
maybe just better to stick to one or the other lol

I've done hundreds of cases this way, I've never greased a case though!!

I never use a heavy load, nor did I need to use a "heavy" (for caliber) bullet either...

I believe fireforming is MUCH better than necking up and then back down to create a shoulder.

I've had better luck fireforming with heavier bullets and middling loads, my 300wby to STWs would leave a really round shoulder unless I used a fairly heavy charge with a lighter bullet, or a 175gr bullet and a middling charge. My .250AIs did much the same but shoulder position wasn't changing quite as much. I still formed those with 120speers cause they were cheap.... actually almost all my fireforming has been COW or Speer bullets.
I need to form the 100 or so 7.62x39 Lapua cases I prepared to grendel now that I think about it.

The greased case idea I got from @Slamfire. I've wanted to try it but haven't had an opportunity.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest doing.
this would be my normal method, and actually something I usually do for the first firing of belted mag cases.

I figgured I we go Gibbs I might as well just start with .35 Whelen case tho.

Admittedly i do have a couple hundred 06 cases, but I'd have to buy a .35 Cal expander for one of the dies I don't use, buy a whole die, or run them upto .375 and back down.....could be I'm just lazy.

Working on a project with my FFL buddy, so we have a Savage long action, and a Shilen short chambered barrel in .308

No interest in a .308, much less in a long action, so the things getting cut to either the 06AI, or the Gibbs.

06AI dosent offer a huge improvement over the standard 06, but it's sure to clean up the .308 chamber. It's also relatively cheap to get into, and my buddy has a pile of surplus 06 we could play with while fireforming.
cheaper to start loading for and much easier to form cases for.

.30 Gibbs gives about the most performance possible from the 06 sized case.
Also cleans up the .308 chamber.
There are sometimes issues with forming the cases from 06 as the new shoulder comes from the neck. So you'd have to go up, down, fireform.....
Figure using .35 Whelen brass might fix that, and there ARE correctly formed and headstamped Gibbs cases available....for a price.
Cost...about double to start, and cases more than double.

anyway whatcha all think?

.300 Norma.

I looked in my dads wildcat cartridges book. There are 2 articles on the 30 Gibbs. One is the Roger stowers and the other is one by Bob Hagel. The title is A magnum~type cartridge it ain't. I tried to find it on line but no luck. My camera is crap otherwise I'd do that. There is 2 on the 3006ai as well.

I think the AI is a pretty good place to end up. The real benefit is the improved realoadability and running somewhat higher pressure at the same bolt thrust. The extra case capacity is really incidental. You can safely get about 2800 ft/s with a 200gr with RL-23 (temp stable) in a 24". That's in the pack with factory 200gr offerings in 300 WM those are probably specified with a 26" barrel and maybe a little velocity inflation.

That projects in the works as well....that ones for me tho:D

the 9.3x62 would also be interesting, but I've already got the barrel, and my buddy wants some none magnum.
30-06ai just because it's so easy. I wouldn't mind a 30 gibbs in some classic styled hunting rifle though. But in a Savage action, just the AI

the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.
Yep.....I played with my kids and their new cars for a while today. 8 bucks and an hour of entertainment.
Course they also spent a few hours "helping" me with projects, from which i still cant find some stuff. So perhaps its the only difference is the price, UNLESS said toys can be procured thru other means......

Id forgotten about this thread lol...for any that havent seen the rifle build thread, we went 06AI
I actually just finished loading 100 rounds to fire form next time im at the range with friends....spread the love....

Yeah, my kids will be getting their own guns before too long. Right now they are actually more interested in the scopes than the guns lol.

The cricket rifles are pretty good. They were accurate to and really safe and you learned the fundamental steps. I was never allowed to have a bb gun or sling shot, dad rather have me shoot a 22rifle.

Ive been considering one of those or one of the other single shot .22 kids guns. maybe that should be my next project...probably cheaper than this one lol. Tho actually now that i think about it maybe not. This one is still under 500 bucks

Savage Rascal. Accutrigger and a surprisingly good aperture sight.
