If we went with the gibbs was my plan..... tho now I'm tempted to try just ramming a heavy bullet I to the lands in a greased case to see if I can't be extra lazy.Talked to my dad, he said just run 3006 in to a 35 whelen die the the guns die. With gordons dies that's save money the ai would have to be set back to be a true ai
I've done hundreds of cases this way, I've never greased a case though!!If we went with the gibbs was my plan..... tho now I'm tempted to try just ramming a heavy bullet I to the lands in a greased case to see if I can't be extra lazy.

I've had better luck fireforming with heavier bullets and middling loads, my 300wby to STWs would leave a really round shoulder unless I used a fairly heavy charge with a lighter bullet, or a 175gr bullet and a middling charge. My .250AIs did much the same but shoulder position wasn't changing quite as much. I still formed those with 120speers cause they were cheap.... actually almost all my fireforming has been COW or Speer bullets.I've done hundreds of cases this way, I've never greased a case though!!
I never use a heavy load, nor did I need to use a "heavy" (for caliber) bullet either...
I believe fireforming is MUCH better than necking up and then back down to create a shoulder.

this would be my normal method, and actually something I usually do for the first firing of belted mag cases. This is exactly what I was going to suggest doing.
Just buy the brass if you decide to go with the 30 Gibbs. You get the cool factor of having the head stamp and none of the fire forming headaches

Probably the smarter way to go, 1.70 isn't really that bad either. All in, with this.
Working on a project with my FFL buddy, so we have a Savage long action, and a Shilen short chambered barrel in .308
No interest in a .308, much less in a long action, so the things getting cut to either the 06AI, or the Gibbs.
06AI dosent offer a huge improvement over the standard 06, but it's sure to clean up the .308 chamber. It's also relatively cheap to get into, and my buddy has a pile of surplus 06 we could play with while fireforming.
cheaper to start loading for and much easier to form cases for.
.30 Gibbs gives about the most performance possible from the 06 sized case.
Also cleans up the .308 chamber.
There are sometimes issues with forming the cases from 06 as the new shoulder comes from the neck. So you'd have to go up, down, fireform.....
Figure using .35 Whelen brass might fix that, and there ARE correctly formed and headstamped Gibbs cases available....for a price.
Cost...about double to start, and cases more than double.
anyway whatcha all think?
RAAWWWWRRRRR!!!!!.300 Norma.

30-06ai just because it's so easy. I wouldn't mind a 30 gibbs in some classic styled hunting rifle though. But in a Savage action, just the AIThat projects in the works as well....that ones for me tho
the 9.3x62 would also be interesting, but I've already got the barrel, and my buddy wants some none magnum.
Yep.....I played with my kids and their new cars for a while today. 8 bucks and an hour of entertainment.the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.
no fair voting after the fact!My vote is the 'Aught Six AI.
Ive been considering one of those or one of the other single shot .22 kids guns. maybe that should be my next project...probably cheaper than this one lol. Tho actually now that i think about it maybe not. This one is still under 500 bucks
