Email from Kel Tec about new pistol

I’ll pass especially with those hideous hex nut pins. The new Taurus .22 seems to be doing really well and is about $200 with rebate. For a little more, you can get the Ruger SR22, M&P22, Walther P22, or step it up slightly and get a Ruger MkIV, or Browning Buckmark.

I’d really like Kel Tex to refine their products a little more, even if it costs more. They are innovative and have super cool concepts, but I feel that a lot of their products are chinsey and made cheaply just to sell at a cheaper price point. I’m not saying all Kel Tecs are bad or anything like that. I just think that if they can refine their products and win over more people.

The Phoenix Arms .22 is lower in price, just sayin'.
And more available. If availability were the same, the price difference is maybe $50, but with the Kel Tec you get 17 rds vs 10, no requirement to engage the safety to drop the magazine, it's lighter, can shoot high velocity .22 ammo without breaking the gun, and the grip is probably better.

I was just about to order a Phoenix an hour ago and decided I'd check out the MSRP on the Kel Tec... very tempting. I'm still going to get the Phoenix, I don't need the P17, not when I'm planning on getting the CP33 whenever that becomes available and when I already have the SR22, which I think is a better made pistol.

I wouldn't knock anyone who buys this P17 tho, it looks to be a very good option for a more defense oriented .22 pistol than the Phoenix that is more just a plinker.

The Phoenix Arms has been way more of a trainer to me than a plinker. Since I carry small Pocket Pistols and Micro 9mm's, the short barrel Phoenix has been a tremendous aid in Point and shoot skills. The more I trained with that little gun, the more I started getting faster and faster at Eye/hand muscle memory. A very under rated gun. No not a heirloom of high quality materials, but a tool that works. Nice trigger, nice sights and a whole lot of fun to shoot.

Say what? you could get a SR22? Lol, I am hoping it is better than a SR22 with the crazy trigger. I am betting the Keltec will be a improvement over that gun. And if you feel Keltec has made chinsey products than you must feel Ruger does the same. A LCP is nothing more than a Keltec without the availability of easy to buy parts for. And the Mark series is more than just a little step up. Not to mention even in the same class of firearms as the SR22 or Taurus TX or the New Keltec. A heavy gun that is more of a target gun than a trainer for self defense. And about double the price. If someone right now laid all three guns on a table and said Pick one, I would probably go with the Keltec, second would be the Taurus.I have shot the Taurus and it is a nice gun, but I think Keltec would be better at customer service if I needed it.

You can't get a Ruger SR22 around here for under $350, which is substantially more than what I expect the KT will go for. I wanted one for a long time, but didn't want to pay that. I ended up with a Bersa Thunder 22 I found used for $175; that scratches my DA/SA craving in a lightweight .22 pistol. Of course, had I sprung for the Ruger, I'm sure I would have been plenty pleased with it.

I think I see a little Grendel DNA in that new Kel-Tec's trigger guard and lines... ;)

I might get one for my go-bag. The barrel is threaded, too. Bonus! One .22LR round is 3 grams. One 9mm round is 12 grams. That's 200 rounds of .22LR for one 50 round box of 9mm. Might be important in an emergency.

Thanks for that. Here I was getting new model gunitis and you reminded me I have a Bersa .22 in the safe. ;)

I haven't heard much about this P17, but there's one video review of it on youtube and it's not a positive sign

Note: I have made many post about the great value of the Phoenix. Just a fantastic plinker and trainer. However NO, I would not carry this gun. And it is not made for carry IMO besides it is heavy at 20oz.

I would not pay attention to the video at this point. The gun is not even being sold yet and you know how the internet is.
That is all worth taking into consideration, but it seems Kel Tec's new "cheap" guns like the KS7 shotgun are having serious performance issues. The P17 is the newest and cheapest gun Kel Tec has ever made.
