Why are we not talking about the Ruger 5.7 Yet?

I saw it on Instagram and assumed it was photoshopped.

Most gun releases don't get leaked. I can't remember any. Most testing and review sites have an embargo for releasing info.

Edit: if it's released, I think it will popularize the cartridge and sell like hotcakes... I'd be interested.

Just saw another Instagram post (fromtheguncounter) and it had legit pictures of it... Not like fancy press ones.

Pretty hard to Photoshop those compared to doctored up ones.

I think it's real now

It's more interesting than the .22 LCP and I like that there is competition for the FN pistol and that might increase the popularity of the cartridge and lower its price, but the fact remains that 5.7 from a 5 inch barrel isn't that impressive. Even at defeating soft body armor (because let's be real, this IS the purpose and draw of 5.7) without projectiles we don't have access to, it's not that good. Against someone with no body armor, it's not significantly better than other low recoil, high capacity pistols such as a 9mm loaded with 65 grain Inceptor, which btw is a larger, heavier bullet that's moving nearly as fast as the 40 grain 5.7 ammo is.

I'll buy one, maybe. Always been interested in the 5.7, just one complaint though... Neither the ruger nor the fn are good looking. I'm not a guy concerned much with looks much, but dang.

In typical Ruger fashion they have not attempted to improve or even change at all the general aesthetic from the firearm they are competing with. Curious how similar the inside mechanicals are too.

Don’t interpret this as me deriding this product. I have considered buying a Five-Seven for ages but this potential offering has definitely renewed my interest further. Mostly the aspect of lowering the cost of guns and ammo and making said items more available.

By and large I would be more interested in a 5.7 from Ruger than FN. I have never been impressed with them in recent years. Too many high priced fantasy guns (5-7 included) that I just don’t care for along with a line of pistols that bring out my narcolepsy.

I'm kind of surprised and baffled.

A Security 5.7 is not a firearm that makes sense at any level.

Curious how similar the inside mechanicals are too.

If the posted pictures are accurate, nothing alike.

Looks like the Ruger is a pretensioned hammer-fired Browning tilt-barrel (a la Keltec) while the Five-Seven is an SA striker-fired delayed blowback.

EDIT: Turns out that Ruger copied FN's delayed-blowback, although it does retain the Keltec style trigger. And that the Five-Seven is actually hammer fired. Huh.

The five seven is an internal hammer. Not striker.

I have 2. I bought them when they were around 1k. One ive shot one is in storage. I had a thread on here many years ago comparing it and the 22 magnum through a chronograph. It's an accurate range gun with zero recoil and a good trigger. Very flat shooting but I see little purpose for the gun when ammo is 200 dollars for 500 and handloading is a pain. Just not a great value in the caliber IMO. Nice guns though

I like the safety position on the ruger. I don't care for the Glock rip off trigger in a gun I consider a range gun.

A few observations.

The image in the OP lacks an optics mount, and the photos shown afterwards appear to have one. Makes sense to make that an option as longer range steel challenges would be fun with a gun like this, but I really hope they improve the profile, because it looks like an afterthought.

If this full sized gun is geared toward some sort of competition at all, I think a beefier slide release would be a good thing. I think the same could be said for the safety. It looks flimsy, and I see no reason to make it that diminutive on a full sized gun. I actually think it looks really out of place for a Ruger firearm.

Why does it have a safety at all? I mean I am used to 1911's so a safety doesn't bother me, but I wonder if they'll offer a model without it.

The grip looks narrow to me for a full sized gun and doesn't appear to be adjustable. This is the main reason I don't buy Ruger semiautos, because they seldom feel right in my hands. I wear XL gloves, so a bigger gun usually works better for me. I hope the final product has interchangeable side panels like the RAP. It would make it more functional for guys with big mitts. The SR series of guns were a complete no go for me, despite the excellent reputation they have.

All in all I find it very interesting and am excited to see what the final product evolves into.

I'm also really interested to see if this leads to another Ruger carbine. Seems logical if they want to compete with FN.

I don't really care about rimfire, but I do see a benefit to having a small caliber flat shooting cartridge in my lineup. You never know when taking a longer shot at a pest/varmint/small game might come in handy. I hope they have partnered with Hornady again for an alternative ammo manufacturer. The availability of 5.7 always seems very limited to me in stores, but I haven't sourced it online.

I also enjoy reloading, and this seems an interesting rifle/not a rifle cartridge to play with. It seems to me the 5.7x28 has been a sleeper cartridge in this country for quite awhile. Honestly, I don't know that I'll ever buy anything chambered for it, because I really have my needs/wants covered, but you never know. The more the merrier.

Would seem like the 5.7x28 would be interesting in a PCC type firearm.

Ruger already has a PCC......

Now they have 5.7x28 magazines....

Probably would require a modified platform. Is the bolt travel on the PCC sufficient for the 5.7 case?

The grip looks narrow to me for a full sized gun and doesn't appear to be adjustable.

What it lacks in side to side width it will have to make up for in forward-back width because of the length of the ammo and magazine. I have big basketball palming hands and my five seven feels every bit as big as the beretta 96/usp/ sig226 and all other guns people complain about being big.
My 10mm glock mags are under 1.5 inches front to back. The fiveseven mag is 2 inches. So it makes up for some of the other dimension
but I haven't sourced it online.

Online I've never seen the FNH ammo unavailable. Even during the absence of 9mm/40/22 etc. I've only used the american eagle once to try it but it was always available at cabelas during the shortages. The FNH wasnt in stock in the stores (I dont know if I've ever seen it at cabelas) but was at cabelas online. Back when the 5.7 first came out I was paying 19-20 a box online. The price has remained unchanged the entire time.

I also agree about the safety. With the trigger dongle I dont know why it has one. The five seven has a plain trigger and the oddly placed safety, which I dont mind. It is kind of like the paddle mag releases of my German guns, moved unnecessarily but pretty easy to use too
