When's Kimber going to start speeding up their manufacturing?

I recently special ordered a new Kimber 1911 from my local LGS. The sales person I spoke to said that it was going to take 12 weeks for it to come in. How come it's taking so long for Kimber to ship out 1911's?

I’m pretty sure they were shut down due to the pandemic, just like many other manufacturers in all fields, so it may take a while to ramp things back up.

Have you stopped paying attention to the news?

If so, over the past three months, the world has been enduring a Corona Virus pandemic that has shut down many businesses, limited travel, and put people across the world in quarantine. In the United States, the area hardest hit was the state of New York, and New York City in particular. Kimber is headquartered in Yonkers, New York. In addition, this pandemic, as do many crisis, caused a panic run on all things firearm related.

Next, was the death in police custody of George Floyd, which prompted nation wide (some world wide) protests, and some rioting. New York was also a hot spot for some of these activities. This also caused an increase in firearm related sales.

With business shut down, travel limited, and pair of incidents that caused a run on firearms, that doesn't seem too long to wait, especially for a "special order" item.

It could be that that pistol isn't even sitting on the shelf at Kimber. Most gun companies make stuff in batches. Unless you're Wilson or Nighthawk or similar companies.

Kimber probably doesn't even have the major parts on hand.

IMHO I'd have to ask why a Kimber in the first place?

I ordered one of their rapide 1911 45's. It looks like a pretty solid pistol. It's probably not one of their most popular models though. I guess it's worth waiting 3 months for.

12 weeks isn’t that long a wait for a hard-to-find gun. And since we’re in the middle of two major events that both have contributed to an unprecedented run on gun sales, lots of guns are hard to find these days.

True. I ordered a custom 1911 years ago and waited 13 months. Uggg

I figured that was coming soon enough...

Some of us have Kimbers that provide excellent service. Truthfully, and I'm not trying to be a brand snob, my 2 Kimbers have a quality and accuracy that stomp the guts out of my previous Springfield and, yes, even my old Colt.

No doubt Gov. Cuomo did not think making guns was an essential business, so they were probably shut down.

For those who may not know, Yonkers borders NYC.
