Pardon me if this has been done. But you can buy the Ruger PC-9 for 550 or so. But how cheaply can you build a AR-9? I see some folks building them. But what’s the cheddar outlay? I’m going to research it myself. But I’d love to know what you’ve spent and ways you can mitigate the cost.

Prior to the recent panic buying, I think PSA was relatively close in price to assemble an AR-9, but can't really build anything comparable from them with whats in stock right now so far as I can tell.

A PSA AR9 is $649, which when compared to the Ruger with the pistol grip is a bit less expensive.

However if you're wanting a barrel less than 16" long the PSA pistols are MUCH less expensive.

The last one I built I went middle of the road
80% lower was about $80 (for some reason the AR 9 lowers are quite a bit more expensive than the AR lowers
Foxtrot Mike upper $390
SB4 Brace $130
CMMG lower parts kit $55
So I had about $650 or so right off the bat. Then added more stuff of course. A folder adapter was another $220 alone then some BUIS and rail under for a light. So by now I must be getting close to 1 K in my favorite one so far. You can do it cheaper than I did of course but it would probably be really hard to get an AR9 down to the cost of one of the Ruger PC Carbines. I have a PC Carbine too and I do LOVE it.

so we are looking at 650 to 1k depending on the set up as a fair rough estimate. I was figuring the cost effect would be in if you were already an AR builder and had some parts laying around. I honestly have a particular look I would want for the build if I do build one. This will sound a bit funny but there was a GI Joe I had as a kid that was running an AR-9 carbine and I've wanted one since I was 9 or 10.

To "me" it's if you like it, buy it, who care's if it's more than something else? No matter why you like an AR9 more than say a Ruger PC Carbine hell get the AR9. I of course have both since I like them both :D:D
Seriously though if you buy / build an AR9 and someone points out you paid more than something else that shoots the same ammo, you still have what you wanted and enjoy.

If you want to go the AR pistol route, the Extar EP9 is a cost effective option as well. My thing is, though, if I'm going "carbine" style I want the longer barrel to maximize the muzzle velocity and reduce blast.

When those (Extar) hit I wanted one BAD. When they let know they were offering it in .45 and 10mm I wanted one even more. The sad part was even before this latest panic they were VERY hard to lay hands on. The Co set up to remain small. Guessing the owner is not willing to invest a lot in a market that could be cut off by law makers at any time. So he is set up so as fast as he can make these they are sold. Suspect they must be even harder now. In a way I guess it was good for me that I could not lay hands on one. Price is great and all reviews make it shine. Since I could not get one though I finally tried my hand at building my own. Turned out it was not only far easier than I imagined, it was a lot of damn fun. Of course I could buy 2 Extar's for the cost of what my AR9 pistol ended up costing but, it was fun to make. If I had been able to buy a couple of the Extar's I am pretty sure I would not have bothered with learning to build.:D

Ya, last I looked the site said there was a 2 week wait, but don't know if that's still accurate. I'd already own one if the barrel was in the 9-10 inch range, as is I figure I'm not really gaining much in the velocity department over my CZ-75.

When I was actively trying to buy one they told me to watch their site, that they loaded the guns on a certain day and first come first served to set up the buy with the buyers FFL. I tried and gave up. Don't know if they have ever gone to some form of Que so you can just set a place in line now. The only reason I wanted one was to use with a brace. It makes it the same as having an SBR without all the stupid NFA hoops and a stamp and they are a ton of fun. Not to mention great home gun this way. When they take the brace away from us I will just use the AR lower I have a pistol on now and use it for a rifle. Never have been interested in the pistols like the AR and others without the brace. Back when they were making a few of these they were fun to play with for a short while but I soon would sell them as they did nothing much for me.

Ya, if/when braces get taken away, pistol setups will have no appeal to me.

Part of it is practicality. I want a carbine and I like the Ruger as well. Both accept Glock mags which I don’t run a Glock but know function well and hold up over time. The ar can run beretta mags which I do run. Plus the visual style previously mentioned. So I’m back and forth. My wallet tends to vote for less expensive options as well.

I have an PSA AR-9 (8 inch barrel) and a Ruger PC-9 with the rifle stock. The Ruger is very well made but I have put tons of rounds through the PSA and don't much care for the Ruger's stock. I know you can buy the Ruger AR version now but I see no reason for me personally to get it.

What I want is a comparison of a 16 inch AR9 and a 16 inch Rugger PCC9 for accuracy, handling, weights.

Not interested in Comparing a rifle with a pistol. I have zip ,nada, no interest in an AR9 pistol, but would love to see some side by side shooting with AR( Carbines and Ruger PCC9.

Handling is one of those things that if you hand both to 20 people some are going to prefer one or the other. Will really mean little to someone who has never shot either. Accuracy also is going to be all over the place. The AR9's are often put together from parts, so who knows how many different configurations you would find. My Ruger came factory with a pretty nice trigger. From what I hear it's the norm. Pretty sure there is already an after market to make it better. The AR's again in this are going to be all over the spectrum. Depending on the trigger group used. Being an AR there is of course untold options here to make them better and are stupid simple to change out.
Not sure what the standard Ruger I have weighs but sure that info is easy to find. The AR's again this is going to be all over depending on the build.
One thing I do like a LOT about my Ruger is mags. It came set up to take either SR or Glock mags. This was a HUGE thing for Ruger to do this. They are so far offering an insert to use American mags too. Keep meaning to order one since the Wife has one of their Americans in 9mm. Could pop that insert in and be able to use same mags pistol and rifle. My Ruger is of course take down, works just like the take down 10/22. I like that. On one of my AR9's I put one of those Tac folder adapters and love it, will be getting another but, they are pricey. Little over $200. They are very well made but damn. Suspect there may be someone come up with competition for those folder adapter to bring price down a little.
Bottom line? It's going to come down to what people like. Going to be really hard for others to decide without handling the guns themselves and see what they like. Or do like me, get both :D:D

I can say I recently bought the Ruger PCC; it is a fun gun to shoot and can handle Glock mags from the 19, 17 and 18

Don't discount a 10" pistol.
