Doing the research the production run ended in 1980. I have two half stampings visible. Second digit is an M, which would date it past the production run. Also this is in an oval and not a rectangle. Anybody have any insight? Thanks, Larry

mM MIGHT be an Italian Navy Marking (sourced from another site) left side looks like a Gardone shield that has been polished or poorly stamped. Any evidence it's been reblued?

Blueing inside looks darker than outside surfaces. Lots of rust pitting, more than I would have expected. Barrel is rust free, heavy blueing and no signs of wear. Grips are a bit beat up. Found another marking at the base of the mag well. Hope these help, also it's the old style guide rod

Can't find an answer anywhere as to the position of the date stamp on the pistol. Also, the bore looks absolutely pristine. Did find the first number of the serial number is on the left side of the barrel lug, the remaining four on the right side. They match

Need to resurrect this. Please help!
I have a Beretta 1951 and like so many others, would like to know when it was manufactured.
Serial number 252xx.
Has what appears to be PS on right side of beaver tail.
On the left side of beaver tail there's a box with a star and what appears to be 5 separate symbols, possible letters. Even with a magnifier, these old eyes can't tell for sure.
With the barrel removed, there's 3 separate markings... the first (on left side of the forward lug) is either PB or P8, the second is PM (on the side of the barrel just forward of the rear lug/breech), and on the bottom of the rear lug is U4140 (steel designation maybe?).
Are there any Beretta sleuths that can help. Also, is the locking block on this year susceptible to fracturing? If so, are there any manufacturers out there making them without high stress corners?
Thanks in advance
H

Do you see a number or Roman number anywhere? Italian date codes started with 1 in 1945 to 9 in 1953.
X in 1954 and Roman so on forward til 1971 when it got weird with XX7.

No Roman numerals.
So far I've received info that the "PS" is for Pubblica Sicurezza (public security)
And the Box containing a Star has the letters FAG, which means "Fabbrica d'Armi Gardone", which is a military proof house
I forgot to add the Frame and Slide are both steel.
Words on the slide read "SIMONTAGGIO" (Disassembly) on the right side near the lever and the left side reads "P. BERETTA- CAL9m/m MOD. 1951 PATENT"
GARDONE V.T. - ITALIA. The gun's believed to be Italian.
Still hoping someone out there can tell me the birthdate and if the locking block on this gun is prone to fracture.

I had a Helwan/Brigadier similar to yours. I replaced the locking block with a new one and kept the old till i sold it off decades ago. I did not see any fractures on the block but seen what failure can do so didn't want to take chance. I think some of these f these were made for clandestine markets and marked (or unmarked) accordingly. A pic of the side slide marking would help. FWIW in good condition these are ok pistols. The weight of the all steel ones combined with the single stack mag though make them tough as a carry gun on on long field treks. Also the use of +P ammo is NOT recommended.

Beyond me. If Beretta or the Italian proof house could not be bothered to apply their own date code, how are we supposed to figure out when it was made?

I don't know what breaks first on a 951, the locking block or the slide. I don't know of anybody shooting one enough to find out.

Seen the block go and push the slide outward. These are second only to having a cz-52 go bye-bye.

Thanks gents, the mystery continues. Figured I'd try a block from Wess Schrijver if mine fails. His product has stress reducing undercuts and fillets at the sharp corners. Can't hurt.

I think I would do a preventive replacement if his is better designed and maybe better material. Don't wait for the old one to let go and maybe bend something.
