Considering new carry gun. Kimber vs. Colt

That's a nice set up Steven.
I like the better sights of the Kimber, but I'm thinking at self defense distances the trigger may be more important.

I'll be carrying this OWB with a sport coat over it.
If I'm dressed without a sport coat, I'll have the Bodyguard in the pocket holster.
I'm a big guy, 5'7" and 230 pounds. IWB and me don't agree with each other.

You should also have a look at the Ruger Sp101 but out of the two that you are looking at i like the looks of the kimber

Price be damned, my wife and I were looking for a revolver chambered in .38 Special/.357 Magnum for her that had the best (lightest and smoothest) da trigger pull available. After squeezing the triggers on many different revolvers, the Kimber and the Colt became the finalists; the King Cobra winning by the slimmest of margins. Like shoebox1.1 said, the "...BUTTER smooth and light crisp DA trigger" won us over but the Kimber was no slouch. Very tough decision indeed but my wife has come to adore the Colt.

No experience with either of those. But I have heard recently people were having trouble getting Colt to respond on some customer service.
Call me a curmudgeon, and no disrespect intended toward this poster, but the OP asked for folks who'd had experience with either or both, not anecdotal, third-hand, "I have heard ..." responses.

I happen to own two Cobras and one King Cobra. In my estimation, the triggers cannot possibly be matched by any current production revolver at the price point. They are solid, reliable, accurate, and did I mention the triggers are superb?

I have shot the original Kimber K6 extensively. I do want one, just have had other priorities for now. I found the specimens I shot to be accurate, easy shooting (although I'd prefer slightly more hand-filling and tacky grips over the wood). I liked the sights. The trigger was okay, but I am not a fan of DAO (which is why I waited for the DA/SA version) but not great. It's a nice package, they're some very pretty revolvers coming out now with great fit and finish.

A poster stated the Kimber has a greater choice of sights; this isn't true -- I don't think this member has seen the last couple models of the Colts that were released. You've got fiber optic, night sights, and brass bead front sights and a target model.

Kimber has that "Royal" version that is sure pretty, but as far as finish? Isn't this for use as a carry gun? The Colts I own are nicely finished and the fit is excellent. But, if cosmetics are that important, a couple of the Kimber models may have the Cobra beat in that regard.

I am usually a Ruger fan.
I own 3 Ruger single actions and have a couple more on the "want" list.
But for some reason, the SP101 never did anything for me. I know asthetics aren't everything, but this is a revolver I want to splurge a bit on. I'm sure they're great though, but for another couple hundred, I'd like to step up a little.

Yes, it's for carry so a beautiful finish, while a plus, isn't a major factor.
Thanks for your real world input, I appreciate hearing from someone with experience with both. I've not handled either. Hell, when I do I may gravitate towards one automatically.
I definitely agree with you as far as DAO guns. I don't care for them, and like I said, I'll be carrying OWB, so there won't be a pocket for the hammer to snag on or anything.

Congrats, you win the internet for the day...

I've handled both but not at the same time and was not able to shoot them. I was impressed with the Colt trigger however the Kimber trigger was pretty nice also. For me I would have to have both together so I could more subjectively compare them and to be able to shoot them would be the icing on the cake. Based on my recollection of these two I would probably choose the Colt.

Get the colt... it's a colt

That's also the reason not to get the Colt. :neener:

I personally would prefer the Kimber. I think the sights are better, the cylinder release is a bit more intuitive, and the spurless hammer makes more sense for a carry gun.

Now, for a range gun, the decision becomes more difficult...

Paul, have you thought about whether you really want a hammer spur on a concealed handgun?

I have.
If I were going to carry IWB, or pocket carry I wouldn't even consider a gun with an exposed hammer.
This will be an OWB carry gun with a sport coat worn over it. I generally prefer an exposed hammer, and with the carry method this one will be used with, I'm good with it.

the spurless hammer makes more sense for a carry gun.

I'm not interested in the spurless hammer. I want a full sized exposed hammer.
But the Kimber is thinner too I believe, which also makes sense for a carry gun.

We have seen n negatives RE: performance or durability abut either one of them, here, on the internet, or in print.

There are all kinds of positives.

Which means...it's a matter of which one you like better/

I would very gladly go through the bother of introducing either into my carry rotation. :)

I think both are accurate, reliable, quality guns. For me, it came down to size, weight and ease of concealment. I went with Kimber.

Your target above says "after accurizing". Can you let us know what you had done to it and how it was before this work?

Thanks!

Going to the sites, both guns are out of stock -- so just use your finger and call it whatever you want.

This too shall pass my friend.
This is but a temporary inconvenience.

And I saw a Kimber in stock at a local gun shop just the other day. They had a regular Cobra as well, but no King Cobra.

Well...since you asked....get a Smith...the Model 60 with a 3" bbl. to be exact. You'll never regret the choice. Rod

I have a K6S 2". I put a TK Custom spring kit in it and a Hogue grip. I have an Alabama pocket holster for it and carry it a lot. I like it. The only Colt I own is an Officer's Model Enhanced 45ACP.
