If you have a collectible gun, don't put your initials on it - unless you are famous. It decreases the value. I had such a gun and went to sell it. When putting the original grips back on, the dealer found (it was on consignment) and we found the past owner's name engraved on the back strap. Lost a 100 bucks on the sale from the collector.

My Shiloh-Sharps has my initials in gold (like Quigley's) on it, and the Remington 1100, 12ga my mom and dad gave me for my 16th birthday (in 1964) is engraved with my initials.
My wife's first gun, a little Stevens 311, 20ga that I gave her in 1972 is engraved with her initials.

Have an old .30-30 marked P.B. which i assume is the gunsmiths initials that did all of the many upgrades and modifications to it. No clue who

I don't.
The only way I will ever do it is if I ever build my dream revolver, I may have it tastefully done on the backstrap.
But that's something I would build exactly like I wanted and would never consider selling.

I was in the awards and engraving business for over 40 years. I've engraved hundreds of guns over the years, but most were common, like Ruger Blackhawks. If a customer wanted a gun with any collector value engraved, I usually advised against it. I did most of the engraving on guns in my city, because word got around that I was a "gun guy" and wouldn't freak out if someone carried a (boxed) gun into my shop.

I once engraved a Winchester for King Hussein of Jordan and a 1911 for his son, the prince (Hasan , I think). A couple of foreign students at our college bought them as gifts for them as a thank you for sending them to college.

I would never do it on any of my guns.

I do have a Civil War Musket that has first and last initial plus last name carved into the stock. I haven't researched it seriously - but I'd love to find a matching entry on a Civil War roster.

not me either. if i go to sell anything in the future, i'd not want it ruined and lose any small value they may have.

if the name or initials are on grips, then save the OEM and put them back on, when selling.

I bought a S&W model 10 with a lanyard loop from Cabela’s Gun Library. I saw it on their page and had it transferred to the Cabela’s near me. Before I had it transferred I asked the guy on the phone at the Gun Library it was located if there were any markings on it to show why it had a lanyard and he said “No”

When I got it the back strap had engraving that said “C&E” with a 4 digit number. It was a Hong Kong Customs and Excise lend / lease gun. Pretty cool.

That’s the only gun I own with anything on it besides manufacturing stamps.

Grip cap on Browning Superposed Broadway Trap Pigeon Grade came with my first initial....never bothered to change it. Some would probably think it stands for "Browning".

Autographed by the hand of "Moses", Charlton Heston....unfortunately he prefaced my name on it as well, wish he hadn't.

If done tastefully and professionally I'd be OK with it on some guns. It may well hurt the guns value, but there are some guns that simply aren't for sale.
