Welcome! You now own the #1 selling .22 in the country. Yes, it is a favorite plinker, but also has probably put more small game meat on the table than any other hunting rifle. Do it proud, my friend, do it proud!

Welcome to the Brotherhood!

Read Bigmike45's post several times and commit yourself and your family to following it. This is a fun and satisfying hobby if you approach it safely.

I was finally able to pick up my Ruger 10/22 rifle today. Was very exciting for me, as it's the first firearm I've ever owned. I know it's just a plinker, but for my family and I, it's the beginning of the firearm journey and my son and oldest daughter were excited about it as well. I'm very much looking forward to getting the whole family comfortable around it, and eventually getting some pistols to practice with. Just wanted to share!

In 1978 I took 127 squirrels with my bone stock 10/22 (no accessories back then). I was in High School and shot whatever ammo I could get. It had a Bushnell Sportview 4x32scope in Redfield tipoff rings. I went through a lot of Crisco, flour, salt and pepper that fall eating them. Wish I had a plate of them right now. Enjoy it and be safe.

have everyone practice and learn all the safety stuff before using live ammo. practice clearing it with snap caps and consider a chamber flag, so - everyone knows when it is cleared and stored, it is really not in battery. for a long time, I didn't have a chamber flag, so - I would just by hand, put an orange snap cap in the chamber when transporting, just for peace fo mind.

A quirk of .22's, more than most guns, is they can show preference to ammo brands, in accuracy and function. This can vary down to individual guns, even in the same model series. One of the fun things you can do is shoot different brands and find out which one your gun likes best. Once this madness ends.

Glade you put that last sentence in there. I was thinking, ( Different Brands ??? ) ( I can't even find one brand ,)

May be, but there's few other arms out there with as many possible accessories.
Various barrel options, stocks beyond number, sighting systems, all sorts of things.
If a person gets "bored" of their 10/22 it's from their own lack of imagination [:)]

The one I got was modded a little already. It has a grey rubberized stock and straight barrel with no sites which came from the factory like that. Picatinny rail, too. The previous owner then put a Truglo Red Dot site on the rail and modded the charging handle so you don't have to mess with the little level by the trigger to release it. I'm likely going to add a lighter trigger spring and a better magazine release in awhile. Need to shoot some rounds through it first!

Very nice. The red dot will serve you well.. I would just get the whole bx trigger group instead of fiddling with original. Would rather keep the original mag release though that sits flat, seems like when I am carrying or holding the gun my index finger rides on outside of trigger guard and ejects the mag.

You r right though go have fun first.

Congratulations. Great little rifle. 623BC861-DA5C-437B-89F4-65C0279D1C62.jpeg The 10/22 was my first purchased rifle when I was 16 . $69 at an Oshmans at the mall. This is in the early 1980’s. They couldn’t find the box so I carried it from one side of the mall to the other. Imagine that today. I still have it . 22 lr is perfect to start. Pistols also. This is not that particular rifle. But an target model for my son.

I have not found the 10/22 to be especially picky about ammo. CCI MinMags and Standard Velocity work fine. They do not like Stingers or filthy Remington fodder of any sort. Plinker? They can be, if built, as accurate as any .22 and I have taken an awful lot of squirrels, rabbits and put down many a pestiferous varmint with the 10/22. They will also shoot that new, if you can find any, CCI Quiet for Semi-Autos.

I didn't have time right now to read all the replies and I am sure I will be simply repeating what others have said. I welcome you to the shooting sports. I fired a gun for the first time when I was about 7 years old. I am the youngest of the 4 sons my parents had. I grew up at a time when putting meat on the table with a .22 rifle was a needed activity for a share cropper's family. My first gun was a Remington Model 510 .22 single shot bought used at the local Hardware store for $7.50 . Stay safe, and enjoy one of the best .22 rifles of our time.

Congrats, @NuShootr! I learned to shoot on a 10/22 and my son (age 4) in photo started learning the basics on the same one I started on. Has held together well over 30+ years.

One of the best things that happened to me recently happened when the old scope I had on it broke. Using iron sights is a great way to start off kids and sharpen/build your skills.

I’ve seen it posted a couple times already but learn the basic safety skills and when training kids (not sure the age of yours) I’ve found it helpful to talk out loud each step and have them repeat. Slows the process down.

As echoed in many posts above, good choice. Although it was not my first .22 mine was my first semiauto .22. and it has worked well for many years through many many bricks of ammo. You will have a bunch of good memories created with this rifle I predict. Also I see more of them in your familys future. I am such an enabler.:D

welcome nushootr! here are some random thoughts:

while hicap mags are forbidden in nj, you can have mag couplers, e.g.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Alangator-...426991?hash=item594b2e7c2f:g:HKoAAOSwMuhenzo~

please act to protect our 2nd amendment rights. vote accordingly. join a pro 2a group, e.g. goa, nra, or your state firearms organization.

consider adding a 22lr handgun, e.g. ruger wrangler single action revolver is an excellent, by-the-numbers, learning tool for $200.

you do now have a self defense firearm, despite the misgivings of many firearms owners to 22lr in this role. here is one brief video,

enjoy and be safe!

Thank you!

I write to my Congressman, Senator and Governor often, about my displeasure at how the 2nd Amendment is treated in our State. I also recently joined the Firearm Policy Coalition on the recommendation of John Paine, the author of "The Second Amendment Manifesto". Funny enough, I e-mailed the 2nd Amendment Society of NJ several times, asking to be active in the organization, and never got a response back. It seems they are only interested in people giving them money. Not actually doing anything. I will persist!

Congrats man! I became a gun owner last June and my first firearm was a Ruger 10/22 also. It’s a great rifle! I put a cheap $70 red dot on it and I can pick off little pill bottles all day long with it.

Mine seems to like CCI ammo the best, but shoots most others quite well also. Ammo can be hard to find now, but if you check CCI website each morning sometimes you can snag some at a normal price.

Got any pics?

Congrats and welcome. I hope that you and your family have a great and fulfilling time exploring the world of firearms.

The child with the green shirt, beautiful baby. Let's get the muzzle from the side of the face and ear. I know, I know, but, but. Gun handling is part of it and the gun is pointing to his body.

Great choice for a first rifle. Having owned firearms of some sort since my early teens, I didn't get a 10/22 until I was in my 50s. Didn't understand what the hubbub was about. Now it's one of my favorites.

Thanks! I was just able to score a good bit of ammo yesterday, so hopefully will hit the range with it soon. Very excited to get my kids involved as well.
