Does anyone else find themselves having to change things up because their regular guns are out of action?

Ongoing drama with squib loads, and etcetera, means I have to CCW whatever is currently unsquibbed and un-etceteraed. In whatever caliber it may be. At whatever position it will fit.

Hence the new carry approach: 44sp and 32 HR at the 1 and 11. Awful silly combo. “Got the 44 for belly work and the 32 for distance chores,” I tell them.

Do you also deal with changing rigs, due to guns being down for maintenance?

While I do agree with Jonny, I don’t see any thing discomforting about those revolvers.
I carry a 32 Auto, and have for the last year. None of my other carry guns are otherwise out of service.

I don’t know what the “etcetera” is, but a brass rod will de-squib any stuck bullet with little fuss.
It won’t reload the bad Handloads however...

No. I carry reliable guns. If the gun is not reliable I would sooner destroy it than pass it along, never mind carry it.

I also carry reliable ammunition that is either high end factory, or carefully handloaded and tested for consistency and reliability.

This.

Also.

Helps to have a spare (though I guess since you carry two, a third).

It all makes sense. I don't have a collection of guns. I have one handgun, one rifle, one shotgun. The rest are all back-ups and the back-ups' back-ups.
I also bought an extra vehicle so I got something to drive when my Jeep needs an oil change. I might should consider carrying an extra spare tire though.

Seriously, there's something non-kosher in your program. The faulty loads are enough to be concerning. The gun being "down" because of that is a pretty big deal. If I screw something up once, I figure out how to fix it. For the next time I screw it up.

I carry CZs and I don't recall any of them being "down for maintenance". I did have to switch up a few times because Cajun Gun Works was working their magic on the usual EDC. My EDC right now is a bone stock CZ P-10S, Gen 1, and it is perfectly reliable. I keep it clean and oiled, feed it good reloads I make, but only use factory ammo for self defense.

I have about 6 carry guns and lots of range guns. If anything were to happen to a carry gun (which only eat factory ammo!), my to-do list would get suspended and that issue would be fixed immediately, and the gun not carried until it had a range test. Range guns are happily fed reloads and factory, and can wait if something needs to be tweaked.
Bottom line...I would never have to compromise and carry something that is not a carry gun that I would stake my life on.

It’s always good to have more than 1 gun so that in case one is under repair you still have something to carry. I don’t carry two at the same time expecting one to fail though.

Only time I change mine is due to weather. Hot weather gets smaller carry (P365, easier to conceal in a tee shirt) and cooler weather (and more layers of clothes) gets a larger carry weapon (easier to conceal) and stronger cartridge (.357 Sig) for better penetration through layers.

If a firearm has reliability issues it stays in the safe for range use until I’m confident in its performance. Only then will it get consideration for protecting my life.

I have both 9mm and 40 versions of my carry guns. For the one I carry 90% of the time I have a spare in the same caliber as well. Should one go down for some reason, or if factory defensive ammo is unavailable, I have plenty of options. Changing carry locations of switching to a different holster would be annoying to me. Changing guns just means a different amount of recoil and magazine capacities. Draw, handling and first-shot times are unchanged.

I carry what I know will run, whatever that is. What is causing the squib loads and etcetera? That would be my primary focus. After having ammunition that works, having a firearm that works with them would be #2.

I think a trip to the hardware store to buy a brass rod and hammer would be on the “to do” list right after ridding myself from improperly assembled or stored ammunition.

I carry lots of different stuff, none of them I don’t have confidence in them being able to fire what I feed them.

The only thing worse that shooting questionable ammunition and/or firearms, would be to depend on one or both with my life.
