What is your favorite Remington 7mm cartridge? Remington seamed to be a leader in introducing 7mm's to the market either from wildcatters or developing their own. (I hope I didn't miss any)

Haven't shot my 7mm Rem Mag in years. Getting older and it just plain hurts to shoot. The 7mm-08 I still enjoy, matter of fact I have a M1 Garand chambered in 7mm-08 in addition to my bolt gun.

We simply must have photographic evidence that such a gun exists. That sounds like a wonderful combination of gun and chambering.

While I voted for the 7mm Rem Mag, it's only my favorite when it comes to "Remington" 7mm cartridges. I like my 7mm IHMSA XP-100 a lot, and I've been intrigued by the 7mm Shooting Times Westerner since it was introduced.
Besides that, when I was a rifle crazy kid back in the '60s, whenever someone said they had a "7mm," they meant "7mm Mauser" and not "7mm Remington Magnum" like nowadays.
I have kind of a funny story that I've posted before about the 7mm-08. A few years after the 7mm-08 was first commercialized, I was looking to buy one (actually a second one) for my wife, and I spotted a Winchester 70 "Featherweight" 7mm-08 on the shelf in a sporting goods store in town. So I asked the young salesman behind the gun counter if I could look at it. I had to point to it, but he took the rifle down from the shelf, checked it, then handed it to me. As I was looking it over, the young salesman asked me, "Now what's the difference between a 7mm-08 and a regular 7mm?"o_O
I was proud of myself. I didn't blow up or anything. I just told the young salesman that there were a lot of different 7mms, and a 7mm-08 was just one of them.
I didn't buy that rifle though. I found one just like it for a little less money over at CAL Ranch - a farm and ranch supply store. And the salesman behind the counter there didn't ask me, "Now what's the difference between a 7mm-08 and a regular 7mm?";)

The 7mm Rem mag shoots the same bullet weights as 30-06 to the same speeds with the same recoil. I find it odd that so many people find the recoil and power excessive. The 7 mag is the better long range cartridge because in the same or similar bullet weights 7mm bullets are more aerodynamic and retain speeds better at long range. But none of that is a handicap at closer ranges.

My choice would be the 280 however. I like being able to get 5 rounds in the mag vs 3 and 280 still beats 30-06 downrange with less recoil.

7mm remington magnum is my favorite cartridge of all time....

The 7mm STW is also basically a "remington" 7mm, they legitimized it only to basically quit supporting it when the 7ultra came out.
I was thinking of the 7mm STW?
Was it Remington that introduced it as a commercial cartridge?

Yeah round about 99-2000 I think......i wanted one in highschool, then built one about 5 years ago. Besides being built from the worst 700 ive ever seen, i really liked the round. A 162 class projectile at 3200fps ain't no joke lol.
Took 5 axis deer with single shots in a sit, and one on the way up the hill.....could have done the same with any of my rifles, but the rounds still on my list of favorites, and that particular event certainly helped put it there.

The 28Nosler is a bit better design if using really long vlds i think (just cause the case is shorter), but the STWs its balistic twin.

Yep and just to add to the 7mm STW <--> Remington tie-in... The 7mm STW is the 8mm Rem Mag necked down to 7mm. Conversely, the 358 STA (Shooting Times Alaska) is the 8mm Rem Mag necked-up to 35 cal, if memory serves me correctly. Being a big fan and owning an 8mm Rem Mag in a 700 BDL, I have love and respect for both the STW and STA.

But back to the OP, I cast my vote for the 7mm Rem Mag, just cause I have one and that's my pick from the "Remington" list. My all time favorite 7mm is hands down the 7x57 Mauser! My 7mm Weatherby Mag is probably my next favorite 7mm.

Were I to buy or build yet another same purpose rifle, with the Remington brand, it would be a .280 Remington. I have an antipathy toward belted cartridges and the .280 is about as much as one can use on game in the contiguous 48 states. In fact, loaded to potential, it's probably more than enough for most game.

Please note, I didn't mention Alaska or Africa. It would likely do for those places to with the exception of the very large, very bad tempered and huge teethed critters.

Years ago I switched from 7 MM mag to 7-08. I don't miss the mag, recoil but it was really accurate. I also decided that for hunting the 7 MM mag and 30-06 were pretty much interchangeable.

Only one of the above I own is a 7mm Rem Mag (Would be nice if it was 7mm STW.)
When I first bought it years and years ago I was looking for one rifle to handle most things I might want to hunt. Bigger than needed for some on the small side for others but a good one rifle compromise IMO.
While I have no issues with the recoil as I get older sometimes I have to ask myself if it is more than I really need.

I can make that happen. :)

It's the rifle on the top.

This is a shot of the barrel. Up close and personal.

The barrel is 12 94 and I built the rifle around mid 1995 as part of a NRA course held at Montgomery Community College in Troy NC. During the early 90s Brownells was selling 270 Winchester 30-06 Springfield, 308 Winchester and 7mm-08 Remington barrels chambered for the M1 Garand. I ordered two 308 Win barrels and the 7mm-08 showed up a day before I was leaving for the class. These barrels were all "short chambered" by about 0,010" so we used a pull through finishing reamer for final chambering. The rifle is all tricked out with the NM sights visible. The custom barrels had a full contour so the upper rear hand guard needs some wood hogged out.

Example of a 308 Win barrel. Here is an ugly look at the handguard.

Been years but I still have all my tools for working on M1A and M1 Garand rifles. The 7mm-08 Rem has an 11 degree muzzle crown and is a very pleasant rifle to shoot.

In addition to the glass bedding the rifle has the modified floated gas tube and a few other tricks. One hell of an accurate rifle but is not eligible for as issued Garand matches. Fun in open class though. :) If I get a receiver I have enough parts to build another rifle including a brand new .308 Win barrel. Back then I am pretty sure Krieger made the barrels.

So there you have it. I have no clue how many other 270 Win or 7mm-08 Remington Garand chambered rifles exist. :)

My two favorite 7mm cartridges are the 7mm RM and the 7x57 (7mm Mauser). Both are superb hunting rounds, albeit for different applications, and I enjoy both out of my Win M70s, an EW for the 7mm RM and a Grade III for the 7x57. Both shoot to less than 1 MOA with factory ammo and I can shoot the 7mm Mauser all day as it has very little little recoil. Just because I'm that kind of guy, I bought some Hornady .275 Rigby brass and will use it for some cartridges to pretend I'm Karamoja Bell. I wish that the .276 Pedersen had made it in a 10-shot clip for the Garand.
