For about 30 years I ave uses a plain shell holder in my kenetic pullers (4?). I read on a forum once several years ago (2010) about rounds going off when a shell holder was used in a hammer type puller, but no definative examples nor have I heard that since.

Yes, I remember the discussions around using a standard shell holder in a kinetic bullet puller. I do not remember exactly why it was dicouraged but I filed that in my memory. I only use the segemented shell holder in my kinetic bullet puller.

The engineer in me thinks that the issue might be that the case could be not properly centered in the shell holder increasing the risk that the primer may be set off during hammering the puller.

Lots of folks use the press shell holders in their kinetic bullet pullers without issue. I’m not recommending for or against the practice, just make sure you are using the appropriate safety gear.

I use the press shell holder in my smack-O-matic and have done it for years with zero problems. You do however need to make sure the primer is a smidge below flush to do this. I would not trust it to work if the primer is flush or anywhere near proud.
