Shotgun Etiquette

A shotgun is not a "shotty"
It's not a "mossy", "winnie", "remmy". It's Mossberg, Winchester, and Remington.
It's gauge, not guage.
A shotgun used for wingshooting is pointed, not aimed, if you are using it like a rifle at a static target, by all means aim it.

Sorry just a few pet peeves of mine, feeling a bit curmudgeonly today, feel free to add to the list, I'm sure I missed quite a few.

The pointed vs aimed thing is interesting to me as I always talk about Aimed Fire and Sighted Fire as being two different things in handgun shooting.

The thing with shotguns is if they fit correctly they will shoot where you look. Strip the bead off and have nothing on the barrel you will still hit the target. I have had two separate occasions shooting Registered Skeet once and a trap game in the dark another time where the bead fell/broke off my shotgun and I never noticed. Never missed a beat on either, ran a 100 straight on the skeet and lost in a shootoff, and won the trap game. I'm thinking it is similar to six gun hip shooting, they are pointing the pistol and not aiming. Much of it is practice and muscle memory with 10's of thousands or 100's of thousands of rounds downrange.

I have noticed over the years that dedicated rifle shooters struggle with shotgunning. Some eventually overcome it and are quite good, but it is a different discipline. Shooters that shoot primarily pistols seem to pick up the shotgun a bit easier. Most of my shooting was in the early 1990's probably shot over 200,000 shotshells during that time period of about 4-5 years maybe another 200k since then. Probably no more than 500 birds last year all together, used to do that every weekend. Prices of shells and non existent reloading components contributed to that.

This thread has certainly been educational for me. I had no idea you shotgun gentlemen were so snobbishly devoted to your enthusiast terminology particular that you wouldn't even respond to someone who had boorishly used the wrong word. Although I've personally never used shotty or Remmy or Bretty, I'm glad I know now to never commit that cardinal error.

But, never having had the pleasure of shooting trap or skeet, what the heck do I know? I do have two shotguns and both have sights. My 1301 even has those icky ghost ring sights. Maybe I should take them off. I have however used them to good effect on many predators large and small that needed an immediate attitude adjustment.

It's the price we pay for living in a society in which an education is available to all who seek it. Use inaccurate terminology if you desire. Just don't play victim when corrected or disregarded.

Sometimes new words like thagomizer are useful, but other times it's just a matter of carelessness or pretense. It's all up to you.

Not so sure. Maybe the real price is paid when we allow others to assume an air of superiority. I'm no mall ninja or tacticool blowhard, and try my best to be humble, but I certainly won't be paying that bill.

Expecting "this thread is closed" in 3... 2... 1...

I will have to say this forum has come along. It used to be if you violated the hive consensus you were thoroughly pounded. Mention pistol grips, even with a stock, and you were persona non gratia.

Seems to me I aim at far off targets, point at close by targets...but the guns I have with minimal sights, or no sights, I point...guns with good sights I aim if I have the time to not point...I think it makes sense...o_O
Here's the way I understand it, which is not to say that it's the way everyone should understand it, nor that it's even the objective truth ...

Pointing a shotgun is what you do at a target that is moving, whether flying through the air or bouncing along the ground. That's because aiming puts your focus on the front sight and causes you to lose focus on the target, which is guaranteed to no longer be where it was when you last saw it. Also, once you focus on that front sight, you tend to stop your swing, at which point you have no chance of hitting your target.

Aiming is what you do at stationary targets, especially if they're a long distance away, even with shotguns. Shooting a slug at a buck is not the same as shooting a load of shot at a bird or a clay.

I have a half a dozen shotguns. One has a ghost ring sight and a pistol grip. I'd never use that one to hunt birds or shoot clays, but that's not why I have it.

I am pretty ignorant about proper words or terms,,,,, hope I don't make this guy mad.
Ignorance cane be educated but stupid is a life sentence, I sort of fall in the middle there.
I have had my feelings hurt on here so many times I am a wreck. ---Just kidding.
M Can I tell my biggest butt burner is when says they are in a tree stand watching for deer
and suddenly look UP and see a deer. ++++++ Deer can't climb trees and they can't fly, and if they did, you would really need a shotgun!
You are right, there are lots of stuff said that really doesn't properly apply.

I’d just like to leave this here and be on my way…

Ahem. (Adjusts tie, and Jersey accent.)

“Dudes! Check out my new shottie my Ma got me! Flip sights, pistol grip, clip fed and tacti-cool! It can shoot, like, a hunert of those dish things in the air! I got some little yellow ones for the first time, and some big gold ones wit little zeros on ‘em. Bigga is always betta!

Who’s up for some clay bustin’?”

(Now backing towards door.)

“What? Wrong caliber?”:D

(Groans from the crowd. Pleas from the back to throw him out.)

“Maybe I could paint it flat earther and ink a cool lettering on it?
Like Super eXtereme superPosed!;)
I’d be all like, desert tactical! Hey, do they use scatter guns in tha desert? ”

(Ducks thrown coffee mug.)

“Oy, hey! I coulda blasted that, but my laser batteries went dead.”

Sorry, I’m not usually this obnoxious.:)

While I don't criticize in my comments, I just don't participate in the discussions when I hear people use terms like shotty or shottie. Life is full of too many acronyms, pet words, and such. Learn the proper terms and you will receive the most courteous responses. It doesn't require any more energy to call things by the right names. Cuteness is not always best. Works that way in a lot of life circumstances. Have a nice day!
I put "those people" on ignore.

When your chin is on your chest and your eyes are closed what are you going to do when you hear a twig snap?

I think my favorite statement in this thread is something on the order of people who use the word "shotty" sound like "mall ninjas."

We all have a lexicon; probably shouldn't worry about it too much.

(But I get it)

I have front & rear sights on my NEF pump and RIA single shot, don't even look at them when shooting clays. They're handy for other stuff...
As far as terminology - whatever floats your boat.
