Time for a new revolver...

Obturation
What I'd like is an easier to carry 5"ish 45 , single action.

New in .45 I would go with Ruger; either a Vaquero or a Blackhawk. I like the shorter 4.62" barrel but two of my .45s are 5.5" and one is 7.5". The 5.5" barrel models both balance very well too. If I couldn't fine anything new then I'd look for something lightly used. I would also consider an Uberti SAA if nothing else turns up with your efforts.

Obtyration

Another "bonus" for getting a new SAA in .45 Colt, is that it now qualifies you to go out and seek a matching .45 Colt lever action carbine! I really made out big time when I picked up both my Beretta Stampede and Rossi M92 at the same gun show!

My choice would be BlackHawk but I can't remember the last time I saw a new Ruger single action of any kind except for the cheesy Wranglers and they are everywhere. I did see a used BlackHawk at a gunshow recently that wasn't worn very much but the asking price was $800. I didn't even check to see what caliber it was.

If I had the BlackHawk bug it would be for a 4 3/4" barreled Super in 44 mag so I could shoot it as a 44 special.

Given the criteria you've put forward, I think the obvious answer is a New Vaquero in .45 Colt..
I would like to try Vaquero before buying it. Some years back I purchased one SS 45 Colt Vaquero Bisley, large NM frame, just to swap parts and to convert 44 Magnum SBH, 5.5", into Bisley. So before shipping it to smith, we vent on to range to try it. Standard 45 Colt load printed about foot high on 25 meters.

Yeah, that's the only problem with fixed sights. You get what you get. I suppose it could be sent back, but 12" high at 25 meters? On the other hand, that's only just over 1/16" on a 7" sight radius. But yes, a sight can't be filed up (only down) so I suppose that's a problem.

I checked out a decent local shop today, they did have 2 blackhawk , one was a 3 screw in 30 carbine and the other was a stainless 357. Neither was what I'm looking for, they also had an old vaquero in 44 mag but there was some bubba gunsmithing going on , barrel looked like it was shortened by an angry beaver and sight soldered back on. I asked about cost/availability on ruger #5129- a stainless vaquero in 45 colt with a bisley grip. The guy said $899 and he could order it but no clue when it would come, said it could be several months but he can get one . I might go that route but if be just as happy to find a blued blackhawk on the shelf for less money. I'm going to just keep looking around. 20220522_104718_HDR.jpg 20220522_104646.jpg

I think if you're patient you'll start to see them come back. I've recently seen a Blackhawk in 45 colt in stock. It sold the same day, but at least they're trickling in. I've seen a few others in stock at online retailers in other calibers. Most have been blue. Prices have been under $800 for the standard Blackhawks showing in stock. I've also seen a fair bit of other revolvers showing up at places locally and online so hopefully supply is catching up to demand. Including at least 1 Vaquero in 45 colt. Good luck in your search!

I’m considering selling my Ruger gp100 5 inch 357 magnum. Has 50 rounds through it and a new Kramer holster to pair! Pretty sexy.... just sayin’... :). Hard to find too (read impossible)

Hey all,

Hope everyone's doing well.
It's time! New gun time is upon me once again thanks to some weird Facebook lawsuit I guess I signed onto at some point in the last few years , they sent me about $400. I've been stashing a few bucks here and there and now got an extra bit of money to throw on it to bring me up to just about enough extra money to get what I want.

But what?
Impossible question. I've had what I need for many years but my list of wants is large and supply is small. I've lusted after a bfr in 500 jrh for a few years , tough to get and I've got nothing for it. More sensible would be a handy sized saa type revolver like a ruger blackhawk, also tough to find.

What's a guy do?
I'm going to look and see what I can find I guess.

What's the point of this post ?
Well...
...
...
In a perfect world I'd find a used freedom arms 97 for $1000 sitting unloved in a case some place. Doubt that's going to happen. Or maybe find a new blackhawk in 45 colt without much fuss, I'm feeling doubtful. I've had some import saa clones (Taurus & uberti) and my feelings are mixed on them. I don't need to hotrod a 45 colt as I do have a srh & a fa83 for that. What I'd like is an easier to carry 5"ish 45 , single action.

I don't want weird telescoping firing pins or any hanky panky. Prefer a bisley grip but it's not a deal breaker one way the other. Reliable and durable with replacement parts that can actually be found.

So I wondered what you all thought, should I sit and wait for a good deal, play the gun broker game, order what I want and wait, try my luck with a repro saa import? Or what.

The money's not burning a hole in my pocket but if I wait too long something will come up and my funds will disappear kind of thing. I'm just drawn in multiple directions and thought you bunch of enablers could help me blow $1000 in the best possible way.

So whaddya think?
You can't go wrong with a Charter Arms revolver.

For $1000 you can just barely get a Ruger Blackhawk Convertible, with taxes and shipping. The people that disagree with that statement haven't been looking lately.

And this is if you can even find one. Check out Gunbroker. I've read Ruger does "runs" and the availability reflects that's. Not sure if that's true. But these things in (2022) are like hen's teeth.

FA or BFR would be sweet. $1000 limit would have to be bumped up though.

9 years ago I bought a Ruger Blackhawk 357 from Gander Mountain, like a Cabelas, for $475 NIB. Now they're about double that.

People will say "yeah that's called inflation, it's normal". 50% in almost ten years on a single action Ruger is definitely not normal.

I watched a Ruger New Model Flattop .44 SPL go for less than $600 And I almost accidentally won a Ruger Bisley .44 Spl. here at a local auction. It went for $680 I think? You just have to watch and be patient. They’re out there. I picked up a used Ruger New Model Flattop in Convertible .45 Cal earlier this year (Which is why I didn’t pursue the .44s in this auction.) for well under $1000.
