I am a resident of Michigan and hold a Michigan CCW license. My significant other wants to visit either NY City or Chicago sometime in the not-so-distant future. I know neither NY or IL honor Michigan CCWs, and that NY City and Chicago probably are even worse than the rest of their respective states. Is there anything I can do legally to carry while on vacation in either of these cities? I'm not a law-breaking type, but I really would not feel safe unarmed in either of these cities walking alone with my girlfriend, day or night. Is there any kind of temporary IL or NY CCW that can be issued to me for purposes of travel?

And please no, "just don't go" responses. I hate traveling to commie states as much as the rest of you, but my gf really would like to visit one of these places. At least it's not San Francisco.

As a non-LEO no there is no way. None.

If you are LEO I do not have the expertise to answer.

Sorry.

Be unarmed{sound of a certain type of whip cracking:evil: }

I grew up in NYC, and let me just tell ya...it takes 6, 7 months just to get a permit to have a handgun in your house!! No way any normal citizen can get a CCW there. period. Unless your a billionaire.:D

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Whew.....

That's a good one. They won't even let us ordinary peasants have one, but to let you evil out-of-staters have one ?!?!?!?!?!?!? That's rich......

Heck, Mayor Daley doesn't even want to let his own retired CPD officers carry.

Nope, no way for you to carry legally here in the Peoples Democratic Republic of Illinois.

Go visit a CCW friendly state and write a letter to Da Mayor and Duh Governor explaining why you're spending your travel $$$$$ there instead of Chicago.

carry everything but a firearm

Legal in NYC and CHI:

stout cane (no gimmicks)
ball point pen (legal kubaton)
Surefire flashlight (new batteries)
cell phone (fully charged)
decoy wallet (hide the real one)

If pepper spray is legal in NYC and CHI, buy it when you get there.

taurus, I'm afraid you are out of luck in Chicago. It would be wise to seek alternative weapons in Chicago if you wish to comply with the law.

That said if you stick to the touristy parts of Chicago in the daylight and the moneyed areas of Chicago at night, you will be fine as the police presence will be strong. I go to Chicago quite frequently and have never felt endangered in the areas frequented by tourists but then I don't exactly look like food.

In NYC does not David Caplan still do carry licenses for NRA members? Best to give him plenty of time I imagine. Have a safe trip.

Let me know if you want restaurant recommendations for Chicago.:)

You are pretty much screwed if you want to carry in New York, but that is no reason not to go. Most of Manhattan is very safe if you use common sense. If you are used to carrying a gun than you are probably already used to remaining vigilant about your surroundings. As long as you pay attention and stick to well-lit areas with people, you should have zero problems. As much as we all know that it has nothing to do with gun control, NYC does have one of the lowest crime rates of an major city.

you are forbidden from bringing a handgun into new york state PERIOD if you do not have a NY pistol permit (Mclure-Volkmer being the only exception), which is only available to residents. even so, NYC imposes its own further restrictions on handguns (out-of-city NY permits are no good unless validated by NYC!).

do not even THINK of bringing a handgun into NYC if your intent is to stay there.

technically, you could get harassed for even bringing a long gun in (they need to be registered).

my advice: pepper gas spray (not mace).

By traveling to NYC or Chicago, you willingly entrust your life to nothing more than statistical chance.

The only person ever likely to defend you is you. By going to either of those places, you discard any meaningful implementation of that option.

You might try fannypacking here in Chicago.
Okay, what are the particulars?
1. Obtain a valid Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) and carry it.

2. Obtain a fanny pack designed for concealed carry of a weapon. If you opt to carry a purse, obtain a purse large enough to hold your carrying case within it.

3. Put your UNLOADED gun in the fanny pack or purse along with loaded magazines

4. A letter explaining the law should be carried in the fanny pack/purse. This letter puts law enforcement on notice that you do not consent to search, tells them what your FOID number is, cites the law and has a space for your attorney's name and phone number.

Unfortunately, as a resident of Michigan, he won't be able to get an FOID. Even if he could get an FOID, he would be in violation of Chicago's handgun ordinance.

Lots of people enjoy risky behaviors. Your girlfriend seems to be among them. Me, I would explain the situation that exist in the cities of her heart's desire. If she wants to visit them anyway, she will have made a reasoned decision that should be respected. You don't control her, of course, but she doesn't control you either.

If I were in your situation, I would kiss her fondly in the airport parking lot, wish her the best of good times, and tell her to let me know when to meet her in the airport parking lot again on her return.

If I loved her and wanted the relationship to blossom into something more significant than a temporary association, I would buy her a magazine to read on her trip. A new one, of course, but not necessarily the most expensive one. I'm a romantic. But I won't spend a penny to support cities that won't let me defend myself against their criminals.

Some of the advice here is rediculous. Just deal with the fact that you cannot have a pistol.

For those of you who refuse to go because you cannot have a pistol, do you ever go to the courthouse? Or any place where you are not legally allowed to CCW? If so how ever did you get out? I mean your taking a huge risk so is it worth it?

Just go and have a good time.

No re: NYC
If you are worried about crime, New York is very safe, esp. for a large city.
General tourist places and Manhattan are very safe. Just keep out of East New York or Bed Stuy.

you should go to San Francisco!

I am a native New Yorker, if you are caught with a gun in NYC it is a mandatory stay of at least a year in prison, not any prison but Rikers Island.
You really do not want to go there.

In CA it is a gross misdemenor.

I carried all the time with out a permit in CA, it's easy and the penalty is far less then NYC.

Plus CA law stipulates that if you use it in self defense and it's a righteous shoot
then you will not be prosecuted.

In NYC if your being stabbed to death and you shoot with a pistol to defend your self and your not allowed that pistol you WILL do jail time.

To all the posters saying NY crime rate is low

the real reason is that police there refuse to make reports!
There is lots of crime, lots of violent crime.
it is not reported so that they can keep their stats down. Period.

In Chicago the weapon could probably be broken down and unloaded in the trunk of the car for the duration of your stay. It can't leave to, say, spend the night in the hotel room with you.

Illinois (and Wisconsin) are non-issue states. Chicago is a kingdom run by a magical elf/warlord named Ritchie II. His Daddy was a gun registering monarch as well--his first registration letters began with "Dear Friend".
No Joke. And THAT is why Indianapolis is a better midwest city to visit. They will honor a CWP from a foreign country.

The retired LEO you did the CCW class I took told the story of two local hunters who went up North on a hunting trip and had their rifles in the gun rack in the back window of their truck. They got pulled over by a NY State Trooper. They ended up doing jail time.

Ok, it sucks that you can't carry in NYC or Chicago, but cripes folks, you're not going to die the instant you set foot in that city. The cities have their bad parts. Stay in the good parts. I think you're allowed pepper spray, provided that you buy it IN the city you're visiting. Everyone breathe.

Saiga39, the reason they got pulled over is because it is illegal in NY to carry a rifle exposed in the car. It's also uber-bubba.
